Nanofiber-based optical trapping of cold neutral atoms

2012

We present experimental techniques and results related to the optimization and characterization of our nanofiber-based atom trap [Vetsch et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 203603 (2010)]. The atoms are confined in an optical lattice which is created using a two-color evanescent field surrounding the optical nanofiber. For this purpose, the polarization state of the trapping light fields has to be properly adjusted. We demonstrate that this can be accomplished by analyzing the light scattered by the nanofiber. Furthermore, we show that loading the nanofiber trap from a magneto-optical trap leads to sub-Doppler temperatures of the trapped atomic ensemble and yields a sub-Poissonian distribution of…

Automatic tunable and reconfigurable fiberoptic microwave filters based on a broadband optical source sliced by uniform fiber Bragg gratings.

2002

We demonstrate an automatic tunable transversal notch filter based on uniform fiber Bragg gratings and a broadband optical source. High tunability can be performed by stretching the fiber with the gratings written in series. Also, high sidelobe supression can be achieved by introducing tunable attenuators in a parallel configuration of the gratings.

Luminescence center excited state absorption in tungstates

2001

The excited state absorption of intrinsic luminescence center (self-trapped exciton) in tungstates (CaWO4, ZnWO4, PbWO4 and CdWO4) was studied. The transient absorption and luminescence spectra, decay kinetics and lifetime dependencies on temperature have been measured. The model of self-trapped exciton and nature of observed absorption bands were discussed.

Properties of condensed spin-aligned atomic hydrogen from variational calculations

1979

The optimal Jastrow-type ground-state wave function of spin-aligned atomic hydrogen is calculated using the pair potential of Kolos and Wolniewicz. The optimization is performed by solving the Euler equation in the hypernetted chain approximation. Accurate energies as well as pair-distribution functions are obtained. The Bose-Einstein condensate fraction is evaluated from the one-particle momentum distribution. The pair distribution function is also used to obtain stability criteria for the system and minimal values for the aligning magnetic field are calculated at low densities. The resulting values of the minimal aligning fields are considerably higher than those obtained previously.

Vortices in rotating two-component boson and fermion traps

2010

Quantum liquids may carry angular momentum by the formation of vortex states. This is well known for Bose-Einstein condensates in rotating traps, and was even found to occur in quantum dots at strong magnetic fields. Here we consider a two-component quantum liquid, where coreless vortices and interlaced lattices of coreless vortices appear in a very similar way for fermions and bosons with repulsive two-body interactions. The ground states at given angular momentum, as well as the pair correlations for equal and different numbers of atoms in the two components, are studied. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Emergence of long-range phase coherence in nonlocal nonlinear media

2017

The emergence of long range phase coherence among random nonlinear waves is a fascinating effect that characterizes many fundamental phenomena. For instance, the condensation of classical waves [1,2] is an important example of self-organization process that generates lot of interest as a classical analogue of quantum Bose-Einstein condensation. Wave condensation is known to be characterized by the emergence of long-range order and phase-coherence, in the sense that the correlation function of the wave amplitude does not decay at infinity. This property of long range phase coherence is fundamental, for instance for the manifestation of superfluid behaviors, or the generation of Bogoliubov so…

Quantum rings for beginners II: Bosons versus fermions

2012

The purpose of this overview article, which can be viewed as a supplement to our previous review on quantum rings, [S. Viefers {\it et al}, Physica E {\bf 21} (2004), 1-35], is to highlight the differences of boson and fermion systems in one-dimensional (1D) and quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) quantum rings. In particular this involves comparing their many-body spectra and other properties, in various regimes and models, including spinless and spinful particles, finite versus infinite interaction, and continuum versus lattice models. Our aim is to present the topic in a comprehensive way, focusing on small systems where the many-body problem can be solved exactly. Mapping out the similarities a…

Singularity formation in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and collapse in Bose-Einstein condensates

2004

We study the mechanisms of collapse of the condensate wave function in the Gross-Pitaevskii theory with attractive interparticle interaction. We reformulate the Gross-Pitaevskii equation as Newton's equations for a flux of particles, and introduce the collapsing fraction of particles. We assume that this collapsing fraction is expelled from the condensate due to dissipation. Using this hypothesis we analyze the dependence of the collapse behavior on the initial conditions. We find that, for a properly chosen negative scattering length, the remnant fraction of atoms becomes larger when the initial aspect ratio of the condensate is increased.

Observation of classical optical wave condensation

2010

We demonstrate the nonlinear condensation of classical optical waves. The condensation is observed directly, as a function of nonlinearity and wave kinetic energy, in a self-defocusing photorefractive crystal.
