Sviluppo e Applicazioni di nuovi materiali per la dosimetria delle radiazioni ionizzanti
The Research Activities carried out during the Three-year International PhD Course in Applied Physics of the candidate Salvatore Gallo had two main topics related to dosimetry of ionizing radiations (IR): the analysis of 3D gel dosimeters and the analysis of solid state dosimeters through electron spin resonance. Both these activities are focused on a careful study of new materials for the IR Dosimetry, both in terms of physical characterization of these new materials and of the optimization of readout methods for dosimetric measurements. The study performed through various techniques such as UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, NMR Relaxometry, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Electron Spin…

Study of optical absorbance and MR relaxation of irradiated Fricke Xylenol Orange Gel Dosimeters
2016
Studies on the optical absorbance spectra of Fricke xylenol orange gel dosimeters were performed, in the wavelength range from 300 nm to 800 nm, in order to highlight some particular characteristics that can affect the achievable precision. The spectra are different mainly due to the different types of xylenol orange that was used and to a lower extent due to the different gelling agents (agarose or gelatine). The characteristic of variation of absorbance spectra versus dose, however, are similar in the various cases and can explain some peculiarities, as apparent effects of dose threshold. Changes of spectral shapes appear over the time after irradiation. Magnetic resonance measurements pe…
Synthesis of platinum complexes with 2-(5-perfluoroalkyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-3yl)-pyridine and 2-(3-perfluoroalkyl-1-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5yl)-pyridine …
2016
Five new mononuclear Pt(II) complexes with 5-perfluoroalkyl-1,2,4-oxadiazolyl-pyridine and 3-perfluoroalkyl-1,2,4-triazolyl-pyridine ligands are reported. The ligands 2-(5-perfluoroheptyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole-3yl)-pyridine (pfhop), 2-(5-perfluoropropyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole-3yl)-pyridine (pfpop), 2-(3-perfluoroheptyl-1-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5yl)-pyridine (pfhtp), 2-(3-perfluoropropyl-1-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5yl)-pyridine (pfptp) and their complexes [PtCl2(pfhop)(2)]center dot 1.5 DMSO (2a), [PtCl2(pfpop)(2)]center dot 1.5 DMSO (3a), [PtCl2(pfhtp)(2)]center dot 1.5 DMSO (4a), PtCl2(pfhtp) (4b), [PtCl2(PfPtP)(2)]center dot 1.5 DMSO (5a) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The comple…
Deficit irrigation does not affect alternate bearing of ‘Valencia’ orange trees
2018
This study evaluated the effect of long-term partial rootzone drying and continuous deficit irrigation on the degree of alternate bearing of adult ‘Valencia’ orange trees grown in northern Sicily. Three irrigation strategies were imposed in summer from 2007 to 2011: irrigation with volumes corresponding to 100% of crop evapotranspiration applied to entire rootzone (CI), partial rootzone drying (PRD) with 50% of CI water applied to one alternated side of the rootzone, and continuous deficit irrigation (CDI) with 50% of CI water applied to both sides of the rootzone. The experiment was conducted on 48 adult orange trees arranged according to a randomized block design. Weather and soil paramet…
Preparation and characterization of a novel chitosan/Al2O3/magnetite nanoparticles composite adsorbent for kinetic, thermodynamic and isotherm studie…
2015
Abstract In this study we developed a novel chitosan/Al 2 O 3 /magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle composite acting as an adsorbent for removing Methyl Orange (MO), a model anionic dye, from aqueous solution. The new adsorbent was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) specific surface area, Energy Dispersive spectrometer (EDAX), powder X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) methods. The MO removal by the developed adsorbent was investigated using batch adsorption technique and all parameters influencing the removal efficiency such as: dose of adsorbent, pH and initial MO concentr…
This article aims to analyse, in base of a private inform from 1898, sorne means of the transformation of valencian agriculture under the new conditions imposed by the expan…
Propiedad y riesgo en los inicios de la expansión citrícola valenciana durante el último tercio del siglo XIX
1998
This paper analyses factors linked to the level of economic development that influenced the rate at which part of the Valencian agriculture transformed in line with the incentives generated by the increase in demand. It focuses on the expansion of orange tree operations during the last third of the 19th century where production options are typified according to their economic results, the risk, relationship with the market, and the production resource needs. The impact of these factors depended on the size of the individual`s property. The results thus suggest that smaller landowners preferred crops that were more labour intensive that helped their auto-reproduction whereas the larger ones …
Pyrrolo[2,3-h]quinolinones: A new ring system with potent photoantiproliferative activity
2006
A new class of compounds, the pyrrolo[2,3-h]quinolin-2-ones, nitrogen isosters of the angular furocoumarin Angelicin, was synthesized with the aim of obtaining new photochemotherapeutic agents with increased antiproliferative activity and lower undesired toxic effects than the lead compound. Two synthetic pathways were approached to allow the isolation both of the dihydroderivatives 10-17 and of the aromatic ring system 23. Compounds 10-17 showed a remarkable phototoxicity and a great UVA dose dependence reaching IC(50) values at submicromolar level. Intracellular localization of these compounds has been evaluated by means of fluorescence microscopy using tetramethylrhodamine methyl ester a…
