Care and gendered work in reception centers in Finland

2019

PurposeThis paper focuses on how gendered processes of working life are (re)constructed and are also challenged discursively in paid and volunteer care and work in reception centers. The purpose of this paper is to show how caring work with asylum seekers can both enhance the traditional gender order and challenge it through enabling men to have opportunities to care.Design/methodology/approachThe data were produced through qualitative interviews among paid workers and volunteers in reception centers, and analyzed through a discourse analysis approach.FindingsThree discourses of care and work were identified: a discourse on solidarity and care; a discourse on control and order; and a discou…

Globalización, valores sociales y choque de civilizaciones

2005

The thesis of the supposed clash of the Islamic and the western civilizations is, by far, the most diffused and debated of all the subjects and proposals dealt Huntington in his book <i>The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order</i>, above all after the terrorist attacks of the September 11th. The results of the World Social Survey 2000-2001 directed by Inglehart, are used in the present article to test the thesis of the cultural differences in a wide sample of Western Christian and Islamic societies. The comparative analysis undertaken allows to conclude that the cultural differences between both group societies are quite important, althou…

Conjugative plasmid pIP501 undergoes specific deletions after transfer from Lactococcus lactis to Oenococcus oeni

2003

Conjugal transfer of plasmids pIP501 and its derivative pVA797 from Lactococcus lactis to Oenococcus oeni was assayed by filter mating. Plasmid pIP501 was transferred to a number of O. oeni strains whereas a single transconjugant of O. oeni M42 was recovered when pVA797 was used. Physical analysis of the transconjugant plasmids revealed that pIP501 and pVA797 underwent extensive deletions in O. oeni that affected the tra region (conjugal transfer) and SegB region (stability). All derivatives showed segregational instability in O. oeni, but were stably maintained in L. lactis. These differences correlated with the different plasmid copy numbers and the extent of deletions within the SegB reg…

The militarization of public order at the end of the reign of Charles III: The Instruction of 1784

2004

The Government of Carlos III, in the last years of his reign, assigned to the Army police tasks of pursuit of the delinquency and…

Inverse Conformational Selection in Lipid–Protein Binding

2021

International audience; Interest in lipid interactions with proteins and other biomolecules is emerging not only in fundamental biochemistry but also in the field of nanobiotechnology where lipids are commonly used, for example, in carriers of mRNA vaccines. The outward-facing components of cellular membranes and lipid nanoparticles, the lipid headgroups, regulate membrane interactions with approaching substances, such as proteins, drugs, RNA, or viruses. Because lipid headgroup conformational ensembles have not been experimentally determined in physiologically relevant conditions, an essential question about their interactions with other biomolecules remains unanswered: Do headgroups excha…

Verbal ordinal classification with multicriteria decision aiding

2008

Abstract Professionals in neuropsychology usually perform diagnoses of patients’ behaviour in a verbal rather than in a numerical form. This fact generates interest in decision support systems that process verbal data. It also motivates us to develop methods for the classification of such data. In this paper, we describe ways of aiding classification of a discrete set of objects, evaluated on set of criteria that may have verbal estimations, into ordered decision classes. In some situations, there is no explicit additional information available, while in others it is possible to order the criteria lexicographically. We consider both of these cases. The proposed Dichotomic Classification (DC…

The thesis aims to fill a void in the historiographical studies about the artistic and cultural relations between Sicily and Malta. T…

Architettura in alzato. Questioni di territorio, paesaggio, ambiente

2021

Denied to typology Southern architecture in the essay recognizes a specific identity and perfect exceptionality in the essence of the place. If the facade establishes a relationship with the aesthetics of the landscape the underlying themes define other significant relationships. The logical ordering of the members the geometric clarity and the rigor of the relationships refer to an architecture that is measured and is a measure itself of the territory and its morphology. In turn the thickness of the facade expresses the relationship with the environment and interprets the climatic conditions in a poetic way intervening on the control of light on the voids in the wall faces on the determination of the shadow. In this way facade-proportion-thickness with the corresponding terms of landscape-territory-environment relationship define a double triad attributable to patterns and features typical of southern Italy and which however also belong to other southern Europe.Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E Urbana
