Selection Task and Computer-Based Feedback to Improve the Searching Process in Task-Oriented Reading Situations

2015

Adaptive feedback has showed to be effective to enhance strategic reading behaviors and performance in task-oriented reading situations, but it is difficult to be implemented in classroom environments. Computer-based systems allow overcoming these challenges. We conducted an experiment in which secondary-school students read two texts, answered comprehension questions and selected relevant text information while receiving automatic feedback about selection accuracy and performance. Two experimental conditions were designed to assess the effects of feedback and selection attempts. Then, students perform a transfer task without any of these elements. We found that one-attempt and two-attempt …

Process-oriented knowledge system for health professionals as a tool for transition to hospital process orientation

2016

AbstractHospitals face increasing pressure to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and guarantee a quality of services. This is perhaps the main reason why hospital process orientation (HPO) – a view on a hospital being a group of processes organized around patients with similar needs is a growing field of interest among hospital managers and researchers. The theoretical research of the content of hospital activities was performed in order to determine the main distinct characteristics in hospital organization that determine the specifics for a process-oriented knowledge system. A conceptual proposal of a technological tool was elaborated taking into account the limited control of hospital man…

POEMS: A Case Study of an Italian Wine-Producing Firm

2006

Over the last decade, researchers paid much attention to concepts such as Design for Environment, Extended Producer Responsibility, Responsible Chain Management, and Eco-design. Many management tools and standards (such as EMAS, ISO 14001, LCA, EPD, Ecolabel) have been developed to support companies in the evaluation and management of their environmental performance and to pursue continual environmental improvement. The more recent development of the aforesaid fields looks at interorganizational environmental management. Such an approach can complement the more traditional intraorganizational corporate environmental management approaches and tools. A typical example of this new trend is the…

Orbital mapping of carbon thin films by XANES-spectromicroscopy

2000

Abstract A laterally resolved micro-XANES study (X-ray absorption near edge structure) of amorphous carbon, hydrogen terminated CVD-diamond (100) and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) is presented. The results were obtained by means of a photoemission electron microscope. Using this technique the well-known spectral features of carbon in its different chemical states (sp 2 , sp 3 ) could be recorded. The sp 2 /sp 3 content of the films was extracted from the spectra. Images, taken at X-ray energies corresponding to maxima (π*, C–H*) of the unoccupied density of states in these spectra, map the lateral distribution of the different orbitals at the sample surface. This study revealed …

Real-time manipulation of ZnO nanowires on a flat surface employed for tribological measurements: Experimental methods and modeling

2012

Elastic and tribological properties of zinc oxide nanowires (NWs) on Si wafer and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) are experimentally investigated and theoretically interpreted. Measurements are performed inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM) using real-time manipulation technique that enables two possible ways of data registration: “external” force registration with quartz tuning fork (QTF) based sensor and “internal” force registration utilizing in situ observed elastic deformation of NWs. Young modulus is determined by loading half-suspended NW at its free end and then employed for the following tribological experiments. Maximal static friction force is estimated when NW i…

Object oriented methodology for change detection technique: the case of Scopello-Sicily

2014

This paper describes a change detection approach based on an object-based classification of remote sensing data for the change detection. The history of urban growth and urbanisation reveals that urban areas belong to the most dynamic land cover types on earth. The trend of urban growth is usually towards the urban-rural fringe where there are less built areas, irrigation and other water management systems. Regardless of the regional economic importance, urban growth, particularly the expansion of residential and commercial land use towards the periphery of urban areas, has an impact on the ecosystem. It is evident that such trend of urban growth has an impact on natural resources and on la…

Monolayer Structure of Arachidic Acid on Graphite

2010

The self-assembly of arachidic acid (C(19)H(39)COOH) at the liquid solid interface between 1-phenyloctane (C(6)H(5)(CH(2))(7)CH(3)) and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to identify the structure of the monomolecular film. We observe the formation of highly ordered domains with molecules oriented in three different orientations compatible with the symmetry of the HOPG substrate, a spontaneous enantiomeric separation of the pro-chiral molecules, and reveal structural details with submolecular resolution. To determine the surface unit cell with an intrinsic calibration to the substrate atomic structure, the intermolecular distance is p…

Analysis of dynamic service oriented systems for security related problems detection

2017

The paper presents an approach to solve some problems arising in the management process of IT security. Our motivation of this research is to study in every detail the context of service oriented systems, which can be defined as considerable heterogeneous, dynamic and flexible configuration of the hardware and software system resources. The fundamental difference between security management systems with traditional centralized and monolithic architecture and service oriented systems is discussed. We propose a multilayered-reference model for service-oriented systems aimed predominantly at principal objectives related to IT based systems security working in dynamic environments. Likewise, co…
