A facially driven complete-mouth rehabilitation with ultrathin CAD-CAM composite resin veneers for a patient with severe tooth wear: A minimally inva…
2020
Abstract The development of technologies that include face scanning and dental software has improved workflows in dentistry. Digital files make it possible to create a 3-dimensional virtual image of the patient that helps the clinician plan treatment and make decisions, reducing uncertainty and improving communication. This report describes the complete-mouth rehabilitation of a patient with severe tooth wear. The treatment adopted a minimal intervention approach, applying adhesive veneers in areas where the tooth structure was affected and used a computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) workflow to prepare nanoceramic composite resin materials with a high filler loa…
Genetic heterogeneity of porcine enteric caliciviruses identified from diarrhoeic piglets
2008
Enteric caliciviruses (noroviruses and sapoviruses) are responsible for the majority of non-bacterial gastroenteritis in humans of all age groups. Analysis of the polymerase and capsid genes has provided evidence for a huge genetic diversity, but the understanding of their ecology is limited. In this study, we investigated the presence of porcine enteric caliciviruses in the faeces of piglets with diarrhoea. A total of 209 samples from 118 herds were analysed and calicivirus RNA was detected by RT-PCR in 68 sample (32.5%) and in 46 herds (38.9%), alone or in mixed infection with group A and C rotaviruses. Sequence and phylogenetic analysis of the calicivirus-positive samples characterized t…
Microstructural analysis (Voigt function method) of mullite in whiteware triaxial porcelains
2020
Triaxial porcelains were produced of two whiteware blends containing kaolin B (of “high-crystallinity” kaolinite) or halloysitic kaolin M (also with “low-crystallinity” kaolinite) in two different industrial firing cycles (fast or slow) with final temperatures 1270 °C, 1300 °C, 1320 °C and 1340 °C. The crystalline microstructure of mullite in all porcelain samples was studied by X-ray diffraction through analysing 110 and 001 reflections using the Voigt function method and by optical and electron microscopy. Mean crystallite sizes were determined independently for both 110 and 001 diffraction directions as principal semi-quantitative characteristics for all sixteen specimens. They illustrat…
Carbamazepine transbuccal delivery: the histo-morphological features of reconstituted human oral epithelium and buccal porcine mucosae in the transmu…
2009
Transbuccal drug delivery is an attractive way of administration since several well-known advantages are provided, especially with respect to peroral management. Carbamazepine (CBZ) is an anticonvulsant which is useful in controlling neuropathic pain, and it is currently administered by peroral route, although its absorption and bioavailability is limited due to various factors. The oral cavity could be an interesting site for transbuccal CBZ delivery due to two properties: slow administration of constant low drug doses and less dose-related side effects. However, in transbuccal absorption a major limitation could be the low permeability of the mucosa which results in low drug bioavailabil…
Zirconia implant abutments: A review
2009
Objectives: An increasing aesthetic demand within developed populations conducted to the fabrication of metalfree restorations and to a wide use of ceramic materials, due to its excellent characteristics of biocompatibility and aesthetics. With the incessant increase of commercial labels involved in this technological advance, a review is imposed on ceramic abutments, specifically on zirconia. We made a search of articles of peer-reviewed Journals in PubMed/ Medline, crossing the terms ?Dental Abutments?, ?Dental Porcelain? and ?Zirconia?. The review was divided by subtopics: zirconia physical and mechanical properties, precision fit in the implant-abutment interface, zirconia abutments str…
Comparing analytical methods to detect SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater
2021
Wastewater based epidemiology (WBE) has emerged as a reliable strategy to assess the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Recent publications suggest that SARS-CoV-2 detection in wastewater is technically feasible; however, many different protocols are available and most of the methods applied have not been properly validated. To this end, different procedures to concentrate and extract inactivated SARS-CoV-2 and surrogates were initially evaluated. Urban wastewater seeded with gamma-irradiated SARS-CoV-2, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), and mengovirus (MgV) was used to test the concentration efficiency of an aluminum-based adsorption-precipitation method and a polyethylene…
Polymorphism and chromosomal localization of the porcine signal transducer and activator of transcription 5B gene (STAT5B).
2006
Signal transducers and activators of transcription (STATs) are a family of transcription factors. STAT5A and 5B are two highly related proteins encoded by two distinct genes. Transgenic knockout mice studies have indicated the importance of STAT5 proteins for the regulation of both lactation and growth performance. Moreover, different studies determine the role of STAT5 proteins in the modulation of adipocyte function. In this study, we sequenced one fragment of STAT5B gene from animals of six breeds (Duroc, Iberian, Landrace, Large White, Pie´train and Meishan) to identify genetic variants. A G/A single nucleotide polymorphism in intron 14 creates a polymorphic PstI restriction site and wa…
