Case of Monopolies at Stake
2005
In this chapter, our purpose is to illustrate the complexity of the outcomes of technological change and the concerns of regulators in the European gambling markets. In 2002, the Finnish Betting and Tipping Company, Veikkaus, estimated, that Finns’ Internet gambling decreased its turnover of betting by 10%. Such leakage is a reason why politicians in different states are considering imposing restrictions of online gambling to other parties of the gambling process, such as Internet service providers, banks, and credit card companies. On the other hand, one possible way to caulk the leakage could be to improve the returns of the players, but this has an adverse effect on the social and politi…
Asymptotic behaviors of solutions to quasilinear elliptic equations with Hardy potential
2016
Optimal estimates on asymptotic behaviors of weak solutions both at the origin and at the infinity are obtained to the following quasilinear elliptic equations
Asymptotic behaviors of solutions to quasilinear elliptic equations with Hardy potential
2016
Optimal estimates on asymptotic behaviors of weak solutions both at the origin and at the infinity are obtained to the following quasilinear elliptic equations −Δpu − μ |x| p |u| p−2 u + m|u| p−2 u = f(u), x ∈ RN , where 1 0 and f is a continuous function. peerReviewed
Quantum like modelling of decision making: quantifying uncertainty with the aid of the Heisenberg-Robertson inequality
2018
This paper contributes to quantum-like modeling of decision making (DM) under uncertainty through application of Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle (in the form of the Robertson inequality). In this paper we apply this instrument to quantify uncertainty in DM performed by quantum-like agents. As an example, we apply the Heisenberg uncertainty principle to the determination of mutual interrelation of uncertainties for “incompatible questions” used to be asked in political opinion pools. We also consider the problem of representation of decision problems, e.g., in the form of questions, by Hermitian operators, commuting and noncommuting, corresponding to compatible and incompatible questions …
Goalkeeper: A Zero-Sum Exergame for Motivating Physical Activity
2021
Incentives and peer competition have so far been employed independently for increasing physical activity. In this paper, we introduce Goalkeeper, a mobile application that utilizes deposit contracts for motivating physical activity in group settings. Goalkeeper enables one to set up a physical exercise challenge with a group of peers that deposit a fixed amount of money for participating. If a peer fails to complete the challenge, Goalkeeper redistributes their deposit to those who managed to complete it (i.e., zero-sum game). We evaluated the potential of Goalkeeper in increasing physical activity with a total of 50 participants over the course of 2 months. Our findings suggest that deposi…
Nonlinear Nonhomogeneous Robin Problems with Almost Critical and Partially Concave Reaction
2020
We consider a nonlinear Robin problem driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator, with reaction which exhibits the competition of two Caratheodory terms. One is parametric, $$(p-1)$$-sublinear with a partially concave nonlinearity near zero. The other is $$(p-1)$$-superlinear and has almost critical growth. Exploiting the special geometry of the problem, we prove a bifurcation-type result, describing the changes in the set of positive solutions as the parameter $$\lambda >0$$ varies.
V I G — A Visual and Dynamic Decision Support System for Multiple Objective Linear Programming
1989
In this paper we describe the principles of VIG (Visual Interactive Goal Programming), a Multiple Criteria Decision Support System, recently developed by Korhonen. PARETO RACE is a corner-stone of this system, which is designed to support both the modelling and solving of a multiple objective linear programming problem. The interface is based on one main menu, spreadsheets, and interactive use of computer graphics. VIG provides the decision-maker with the possibility to approach his/her decision problem by using an “evolutionary approach”. This means that the decision-maker does not have to specify the model precisely prior to solving the problem. In fact, the model evolves progressively. W…
A new Adaptive and Progressive Image Transmission Approach using Function Superpositions
2010
International audience; We present a novel approach to adaptive and progressive image transmission, based on the decomposition of an image into compositions and superpositions of monovariate functions. The monovariate functions are iteratively constructed and transmitted, one after the other, to progressively reconstruct the original image: the progressive transmission is performed directly in the 1D space of the monovariate functions and independently of any statistical properties of the image. Each monovariate function contains only a fraction of the pixels of the image. Each new transmitted monovariate function adds data to the previously transmitted monovariate functions. After each tra…
A Methodology for the Analysis of Memory Response to Radiation through Bitmap Superposition and Slicing
2015
A methodology is proposed for the statistical analysis of memory radiation test data, with the aim of identifying trends in the single-even upset (SEU) distribution. The treated case study is a 65nm SRAM irradiated with neutrons, protons and heavy-ions.
