Ergonomic Risks in the Printing Company and Workers’ Wellbeing

2014

The aim of the study was to analyze the ergonomic risks in the printing company and to study the impact of ergonomics risks on employees’ wellbeing. The study involved 67 company workers aged 18 to 67 years. In the study, physical load evaluation methods and questionnaire on welfare and psychoemotional risks at work, adopted by Swedish Environmental Research Institute, were used. It was proved that production workers were subjected to increased physical workload. At work they are exposed to physical pressure on hands, shoulders and back. The workload is more affected by the increase in work tension due to limited time of order execution. It was concluded that ergonomic risks partly affect e…

New Stage-Discharge Equation for the SMBF Flume

2016

AbstractFlumes for indirect discharge measurements are widespread and are characterized by a particular shape of the cross section area with various degrees of convergence and subsequent divergence. The flume named Samani, Magallanez, Baiamonte, Ferro (SMBF) is a simple and inexpensive instrument and its channel contraction is obtained by applying two semicylinders to the walls of a rectangular cross section. At first, in this paper a new stage-discharge equation for the SMBF flume is theoretically deduced. Then, this equation is experimentally calibrated using the laboratory measurements from the literature for different values of the contraction ratio. Finally the field measurements carri…

Selective recovery of gold from electronic waste using 3D-printed scavenger

2017

Around 10% of the worldwide annual production of gold is used for manufacturing of electronic devices. According to the European Commission, waste electric and electronic equipment is the fastest growing waste stream in the European Union. This has generated the need for an effective method to recover gold from electronic waste. Here, we report a simple, effective, and highly selective nylon-12-based three-dimensional (3D)-printed scavenger objects for gold recovery directly from an aqua regia extract of a printed circuit board waste. Using the easy to handle and reusable 3D-printed meshes or columns, gold can be selectively captured both in a batch and continuous flow processes by dipping …

Status of hormones and painkillers in wastewater effluents across several European states-considerations for the EU watch list concerning estradiols …

2016

Present technologies for wastewater treatment do not sufficiently address the increasing pollution situation of receiving water bodies, especially with the growing use of personal care products and pharmaceuticals (PPCP) in the private household and health sector. The relevance of addressing this problem of organic pollutants was taken into account by the Directive 2013/39/EU that introduced (i) the quality evaluation of aquatic compartments, (ii) the polluter pays principle, (iii) the need for innovative and affordable wastewater treatment technologies, and (iv) the identification of pollution causes including a list of principal compounds to be monitored. In addition, a watch list of 10 o…

A comparative review of CASE shells: A preliminary framework and research outcomes

1993

Abstract Because of rigidity and weak support of the user's native methods and methodologies in existing CASE tools, there is a growing need for customizable CASE tools (CASE shells). The nature of CASE shells is different from ordinary CASE tools supporting a fixed set of methods. With CASE shells, organizations can define tools to support their own methods, instead of choosing a tool that supports them. Existing CASE shells have different features and architectural principles that make them appropriate for different tasks. Obviously, a framework for comparing them is needed. In this paper we develop one such framework. It takes into account different tasks in customization and the effecti…

Designing for Networked Community Resilience

2016

Abstract Communities have been described to be at the heart of the preparedness for and the response to disasters. The increasing connectedness has made communities more vulnerable for their dependence on a complex network of critical infrastructures. At the same time, this very connectedness has the potential to enable communities to self-organise, engage, and connect with other communities to improve their resilience. While the pathway to more resilience is promising and has many advocates, the response to crises and disasters, time and again reveals the challenges related to (i) ad-hoc switching from preparedness to response; (ii) ad-hoc connecting professional responders, communities, v…

Engaging learners through virtual worlds

2010

Abstract The aim of this paper is to explore how virtual worlds could support the engagement for learning. This paper reviews the results of studies that utilized virtual worlds to engage learners. The results are examined in two levels, namely learning gains and design principles. It has been found out that deeper learner engagement results in higher learning gains. In some studies better content retention is also noted. Many studies also suggest design principles for using virtual worlds for facilitating engaged learning. This paper builds a framework for the design and use of virtual worlds in education for better learner engagement.

An efficient analytical approach for obtaining a five parameters model of photovoltaic modules using only reference data

2013

Exploiting the equivalent one-diode circuit of a photovoltaic (PV) module, this paper proposes a novel and fully analytical model to predict the electrical performance upon solar irradiance intensity and PV module temperature. The model refers essentially to an equivalent circuit governed by five parameters and the extraction of them permits to describe the current–voltage curve of the PV panel and consequently permits to assess the energy output of PV modules. The proposed model extracts the five characteristic parameters using only exact analytical relationship and tabular data always available such as short-circuit current, open circuit voltage and the Maximum Power Point (MPP). The diff…

Grid integration of PEM fuel cell with multiphase switching for maximum power operation

2016

Energy storage in the form of electrolytic Hydrogen can play an important role for integration of intermittent renewable energy sources in the smart grid environment. Electrolytic Hydrogen can be used as a fuel in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. In this work, a technique for multiphase switching of a DC-DC converter associated with grid integration of a PEM fuel cell stack for maximum power operation in non-dispatchable mode is proposed. The presented system consists of a PEM fuel cell stack which is operating in non-dispatchable mode of operation, DC-DC multiphase switching boost converter for maximum power operation and a grid tied three phase voltage source inverter (VSI). VSI …

Photovoltaic based active generator: Energy control system using stateflow analysis

2015

At present, most of the grid connected photovoltaic (PV) systems are operating at maximum power points and injecting power in uncontrolled way. Thus, active generator will be a good solution to support instantaneous power balance, frequency control and maintaining the power quality with controllable power injection. This new mode of active generator needs innovative power management. The new proposed energy control system for active generator might help to manage the energy within the micro-grid environment. In this work, the focus is to manage the energy among the PV based active generator, load and interconnected grid and energy controller architecture for that purpose is presented. It co…
