BIO Bragg gratings on microfibers for label-free biosensing

2021

[EN] Discovering nanoscale phenomena to sense biorecognition events introduces new perspectives to exploit nano science and nanotechnology for bioanalytical purposes. Here we present Bio Bragg Gratings (BBGs), a novel biosensing approach that consists of diffractive structures of protein bioreceptors patterned on the surface of optical waveguides, and tailored to transduce the magnitude of biorecognition assays into the intensity of single peaks in the reflection spectrum. This work addresses the design, fabrication, and optimization of this system by both theoretical and experimental studies to explore the fundamental physicochemical parameters involved.

2008

In Nebrodi Mountains (N-E Sicily), the genus Mentha is represented by an high number of species, in many cases typical of humid and subhumid environments. This work was addressed to investigate about the biomorphological traits of various accessions belonging to 3 Mentha species collected in the Nebrodi highlands, namely 22 accessions of Mentha spicata, 12 of Mentha suaveolens and 13 of Mentha aquatica. Plant material was picked up starting from the early spring 2007, from different sites as in altitude and in pedological and climatic traits, that were distributed over an area of 200.000 ha approx.. Later on, all collected plant individuals were transplanted in a collection field, appositel…

A novel boundary element formulation for anisotropic fracture mechanics

2019

Abstract A novel boundary element formulation for two-dimensional fracture mechanics is presented in this work. The formulation is based on the derivation of a supplementary boundary integral equation to be used in combination with the classic displacement boundary integral equation to solve anisotropic fracture mechanics problems via a single-region approach. The formulation is built starting from the observation that the displacement field for an anisotropic domain can be represented as the superposition of a vector field, whose components satisfy a suitably defined anisotropic Laplace equation, and the gradient of the Airy stress function. The supplementary boundary integral equation is …

Quantitative uniqueness estimates for pp-Laplace type equations in the plane

2016

Abstract In this article our main concern is to prove the quantitative unique estimates for the p -Laplace equation, 1 p ∞ , with a locally Lipschitz drift in the plane. To be more precise, let u ∈ W l o c 1 , p ( R 2 ) be a nontrivial weak solution to div ( | ∇ u | p − 2 ∇ u ) + W ⋅ ( | ∇ u | p − 2 ∇ u ) = 0  in  R 2 , where W is a locally Lipschitz real vector satisfying ‖ W ‖ L q ( R 2 ) ≤ M for q ≥ max { p , 2 } . Assume that u satisfies certain a priori assumption at 0. For q > max { p , 2 } or q = p > 2 , if ‖ u ‖ L ∞ ( R 2 ) ≤ C 0 , then u satisfies the following asymptotic estimates at R ≫ 1 inf | z 0 | = R sup | z − z 0 | 1 | u ( z ) | ≥ e − C R 1 − 2 q log R , where C > 0 depends …

Ultra-fast-prototyping of PMMA structures for micro-engineering applications: Choosing the right material

2017

Machining of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by laser has been extensively studied in engineering research for several applications including microfluidic manufacturing and rapid prototyping. However, very few investigations have taken into consideration the wide range of physico-chemical characteristics of commercially available PMMA that can often affect the quality of the laser-machined structures. These characteristics are often ignored, with many manufacturing publications focusing on a single source of PMMA. To understand the different bonding strengths and laser-cut qualities in the context of our ultra-fast prototyping technique, four types of PMMA have been examined. Molecular wei…

Ģenētiski modofocētu kultūraugu audzēšanas aktuāli tiesiskie jautājumi Latvijā

2016
