Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (s-ICAM-1/s-CD54) in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: association with clinical characteristics and outcome
2003
Background: High serum levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1(s-ICAM-1/s-CD54) have been associated with adverse clinical features and poor outcome in chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but their value in the different subtypes of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma has not been well addressed. Patients and methods: Our aim was to study the serum levels of s-ICAM-1 in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and to correlate them with clinical characteristics and outcome. We analyzed the serum levels of s-ICAM-1 in a series of 55 patients with DLBCL diagnosed in a single institution. s-ICAM-1 levels were quantified by an immunoenzymatic assay. Median ag…
Morphometric assessment of testicular changes in drug-related fatalities.
2000
Testicular sections of 50 deceased drug addicts were examined by light microscopy using morphometric methods and determining the extent of spermatogenesis by application of the Johnsen score count. Twenty cases of violent death served as reference sample. The study was aimed at obtaining data about the degree of germinal gland damage following the duration of the individual drug career, which was correlated to the histologic findings. Progressively reduced maturation of germinal cells, decrease of tubular diameter and height of sperm-producing epithelium were found the longer the individual case history has been. The results clearly indicated a substantial impairment of male fertility in th…
Temporal evolution of stress in the year prior to the onset of depressive disorders
1999
Abstract Background . We investigate how the stress levels in a sample of patients with depressive disorders vary in the year prior to the onset of symptoms. Design . Observational study of the case/control type. Fifty patients whose first depressive episode began in the 6 months prior to the interview Method . The LEDS was applied to all the subjects. A calculation was made of the evolution week by week of stress throughout the year prior to the onset. Results . Notable differences were detected in the temporal profile of the stress between the depressive patients and control groups. The differences between them were especially far-reaching in the 26 weeks prior to the onset of the symptom…
Enzyme Replacement Therapy Stabilized White Matter Lesion Progression in Fabry Disease
2014
Background: The central nervous system manifestations in Fabry disease (FD) include progressive white matter lesions (WMLs) and stroke. Due to progressive microvascular involvement, men and women with FD over 35 years of age develop WMLs. Moreover, the prevalence of stroke has been estimated to be 12 times higher in FD compared with the general population. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) is available and has shown beneficial effects on renal, cardiac, and peripheral nerve function in FD, but the ERT effect on the progression of WMLs, or the reduction in cerebrovascular events, remains unknown. Methods: The WML burd…
Course of cognitive deficits in first episode of non-affective psychosis: a 3-year follow-up study.
2013
Abstract Cognitive dysfunctions are critical determinants of the quality of life and functionality in schizophrenia. Whether the cognitive deficits present at an early stage, are static or change across one's lifespan is still under debate. This study aims to investigate the long-term (3 years) course of cognitive deficits in a large and representative cohort of first episode schizophrenia spectrum patients (N = 155),and evaluate their influence on disability. In addition, a healthy control sample (N = 43) was also studied for comparison. This study evaluates the performance of patients and controls in a battery of cognitive assessments using baseline, 1-year and 3-year follow-up designs. T…
Progression of untreated mild thoracic Scheuermann's kyphosis – Radiographic and functional assessment after mean follow-up of 46 years
2017
There is no data available on the radiographic development of the Scheuermann's deformity. Our purpose was to investigate radiographic deformity progression and the relation between kyphosis progression and clinical outcome in patients with untreated Scheuermann's kyphosis.Thoracic kyphosis (Th4-Th12) was measured from standing lateral radiographs in 19 patients at baseline and after mean 46-year follow-up. Mean age at baseline was 19.2 and at follow-up 64.7 years. At follow-up, height, weight, hand grip strength, and hamstring tightness were measured, and sit-to-stand and walking tests were performed. Additionally general health and quality of life questionnaires were administered. The mean…
Impaired exercise tolerance is associated with increased urine albumin excretion in the early stages of essential hypertension
2011
Background: Our aim was to investigate the relationship between impaired exercise capacity and albumin excretion level in the setting of never treated essential hypertension. Design and methods: For this purpose, 338 consecutive essential hypertensives (52 ± 8.5 years, 227 males, office BP = 148.6/96.1 mmHg) performed a negative for myocardial ischemia, maximal treadmill exercise testing and were classified based on the gender specific median value of the amount of metabolic equivalents (METs) achieved (10.1 ml/kg/min for women and 11 ml/kg/min for men) as fit ( n = 177) and unfit ( n = 161). All the participants underwent 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring, complete echocardiographic study inc…
Comparison of computed virtual chromoendoscopy and conventional chromoendoscopy with acetic acid for detection of neoplasia in Barrett's esophagus.
2007
Background and study aims Computed virtual chromoendoscopy (CVC) is a new imaging technique that enhances mucosal surface contrast and highlights the vascular pattern without the need for dye-spraying as in conventional chromoendoscopy. The aim of this prospective randomized pilot study with a crossover design was to compare CVC with conventional chromoendoscopy with acetic acid (CAA) for the detection of high grade intraepithelial neoplasia (HGIN) or early cancer in patients with Barrett's esophagus. Patients and methods 57 patients with Barrett's esophagus (mean length 3.8 cm) and a history of HGIN/early cancer or suspected HGIN/early cancer were randomly allocated to undergo either CAA o…
Short-Term Prognosis of Juvenile Myocardial Infarction
2016
In our early research regarding the hemorheological pattern in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with a mean age of 61.45 + 10.99 years, we showed that the major hemorheological parameters were almost normalized 2 weeks after the acute event. In the last decade, we focused on hemorheological parameters in juvenile myocardial infarction (JMI), defined as AMI in patients aged 45 years, in the ‘‘Sicilian study on juvenile myocardial infarction’’. Juvenile myocardial infarction is responsible for 2% to 10% of all cases with AMI in different surveys. Juvenile myocardial infarction presents a typical pattern of risk factors and shows clinical, angiographic, and prognostic characteri…
Large left ventricular metastatis in patient with liposarcoma.
2014
Abstract Metastasis to the heart and pericardium are rare. We present a 44-year-old male with pleural dedifferentiated liposarcoma and multiple metastases, with no previous cardiological history and/or cardiac symptoms. A transthoracic echocardiogram during the advanced stage of disease showed a lobulated, large and mobile mass, with homogeneous echogenicity, attached to the basal posterior wall of the left ventricle via a broad base and with intracavitary growth. This mass extends to inferolateral and inferoseptal wall of the left ventricle.
