p16INK4A (CDKN2A) gene deletion is a frequent genetic event in synovial sarcomas.

We assessed the frequency of genomic deletion of p16 INK4A (CDKN2A) in synovial sarcomas (SSs) and its possible association with immunoexpression of p16 and cyclin D1 and the Ki-67 proliferation index using dualcolor fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) on tissue microarray sections of 41 histologically and molecularly confirmed SSs. A heterozygous p16 INK4A gene deletion was identified in 28 (74%) of 38 cases, with 25 (89%) of them showing abnormal p16 protein expression (20 negative and 5 heterogeneous). Finland offers a specific example of a country with a broad enrolment in higher education, where the educational starting age is relatively high and where studies may last considerably longer than in most other European countries. This study attempted to identify at-risk students in Finnish universities with the greatest probability of non-completion of studies. Immune effects of 5-fluorouracil

Cytotoxic anticancer drugs can promote antitumor immune responses. The anticancer activity of 5-fluorouracil (5FU) relies on the restoration of T-cell immunity following the elimination of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). We have recently discovered that the 5FU-driven activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in MDSCs promotes tumor angiogenesis by eliciting TH17 responses that compromise anticancer immunity. This underscores the need to combine 5-FU with NLRP3 inhibitors to prevent tumor progression.

Microradiography and confocal laser scanning microscopy applied to enamel lesions formed in vivo with and without fluoride varnish treatment

The aim of the present investigation was to combine 2 techniques suitable for lesion characterization: quantitative microradiography (TMR) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) on in vivo induced lesions with and without a fluoride varnish (Duraphat(R)) treatment. Orthodontic bands were attached to premolars to be extracted for orthodontic reasons to induce enamel caries on the buccal surfaces. In the caries development part of the study, 1 tooth of each pair received at the start 1 topical application with the fluoride varnish Duraphat(R), the contralateral tooth serving as untreated control.
