Recent advances on intelligent packaging as tools to reduce food waste

2018

[EN] Food waste is one of the main issues for international organisms. It is not only an ethical and economic issue but it also depletes the environment of limited natural resources. Among strategies suitable for fighting such challenge, intelligent packaging is an interesting tool to reduce waste derived from households and retailers. A revision of 45 recent advances in the area of optical systems for freshness monitoring is reported herein. The study covers fruits, vegetables, fish products and meat since they are the most representative fields of application. Furthermore, a discussion about the main research challenges and opportunities that will be faced by intelligent packaging in the …

Towards roll-to-roll fabrication of electronics, optics and optoelectronics for smart and intelligent packaging

2004

Embedding of optoelectrical, optical, and electrical functionalities into low-cost products like packages and printed matter can be used to increase their information content. These functionalities make also possible the realization of new type of entertaining, impressive or guiding effects on the product packages and printed matter. For these purposes, components like displays, photodetectors, light sources, solar cells, battery elements, diffractive optical elements, lightguides, electrical conductors, resistors, transistors, switching elements etc. and their integration to functional modules are required. Additionally, the price of the components for low-end products has to be in cent sc…

Note: Critical Factors in Opening Pharmaceutical Packages: a Usability Study among Healthcare Workers, Women with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Elderly Wo…

2016

This cross-sectional study compared the usability of pharmaceutical packages to determine the critical factors involved in packages with different opening mechanisms. Four packaging types (a bottle with a screw cap, a box with a pill plate, disposable plastic droppers with a container and a jar with a hinge cap) were evaluated by 45 women (nurses, older women and women with rheumatoid arthritis). Usability was evaluated for subjective measures related to the ease of opening and for objective measures related to the time needed to open the packaging, electrical muscular activity (electromyography, EMG) and ranges of motion of the upper extremities. Of the arthritic women, 13% were unable to …

Sorption Equilibria of Ethanol on Cork

2013

International audience; We report here for the first time a thermodynamic study of gaseous ethanol sorption on raw cork powder and plate. Our study aims at a better understanding of the reactivity of this material when used as a stopper under enological conditions, thus in close contact with a hydroethanolic solution, wine. Sorption−desorption isotherms were accurately measured by thermogravimetry at 298 K in a large range of relative pressures. Sorption enthalpies were determined by calorimetry as a function of loading. Sorption−desorption isotherms exhibit a hysteresis loop probably due to the swelling of the material and the absorption of ethanol. Surprisingly, the sorption enthalpy of e…

Food Tray Sealing Fault Detection in Multi-Spectral Images Using Data Fusion and Deep Learning Techniques

2021

A correct food tray sealing is required to preserve food properties and safety for consumers. Traditional food packaging inspections are made by human operators to detect seal defects. Recent advances in the field of food inspection have been related to the use of hyperspectral imaging technology and automated vision-based inspection systems. A deep learning-based approach for food tray sealing fault detection using hyperspectral images is described. Several pixel-based image fusion methods are proposed to obtain 2D images from the 3D hyperspectral image datacube, which feeds the deep learning (DL) algorithms. Instead of considering all spectral bands in region of interest around a contamin…

Concentrations of monosaccharides in humic substances in the early stages of humification.

2001

Deteriorated liquid packaging board (LPB) and biowaste compost are matrices, mainly consisting of cellulose, in the early stages of humification. Degradative studies on these matrices allow an examination of the role of carbohydrates in the synthesis of humic substances. Samples of different age were collected and divided by extraction into hot water extract (HWE), bitumen, humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FA) and humin or residual fibre fractions. The following monosaccharides were identified in these fractions: L-arabinose, D-ribose, D-xylose, L-fucose, D-mannose, D-fructose, D-galactose, D-glucose, L-rhamnose and xylitol. The main component in all fractions was glucose. The concentrations o…

Chlorinated dioxins and dibenzothiophenes in fly ash samples from combustion of peat, wood chips, refuse derived fuels and liquid packaging boards

1995

Abstract Peat, wood chips, refuse derived fuel and liquid packaging board in different combinations were burned at a temperature of at least 850 °C. Fly ash samples from these combustions were analyzed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes (PCDBTs) by high resolution GC/MS. The concentrations of tri- and tetrachlorodibenzothiophenes and tri-, tetra- and pentachlorodioxins were highest when mixtures of wood chips and refuse derived fuel (RDF) were burned. The fly ash from the combustion of pure peat pellets did not contain any polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes. When wood chips and RDF were burned the concentrations of chlorinated compounds in fly…

Physico-chemical stability of eribulin mesylate containing concentrate and ready-to-administer solutions.

2013

Objectives The aim of this study was to determine the stability of commercially available eribulin mesylate containing injection solution as well as diluted ready-to-administer solutions stored under refrigeration or at room temperature. Methods Stability was studied by a novel developed stability-indicating reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) assay with ultraviolet detection (detection wavelength 200 nm). Triplicate test solutions of eribulin mesylate containing injection concentrate (0.5 mg/mL) and with 0.9% sodium chloride solution diluted ready-to-administer preparations (0.205 mg/mL eribulin mesylate in polypropylene (PP) syringes, 0.020 mg/mL eribulin mesyl…

High throughput electro-hydrodynamic processing in food encapsulation and food packaging applications: Viewpoint

2017

Abstract Looking genuinely at nature, nanofibers often serve as a basic platform where either organic or inorganic components are built upon. The fiber structure exhibits, from a structural point of view, the intrinsic ability to mechanically reinforce materials but also the less well-known property of enhancing the barrier performance of polymer matrices when applied smartly. To reproduce and tailor this extraordinary nature's design, a reliable technology that is able to fabricate fiber nanostructures from a variety of materials with size and size distribution control and composition flexibility is highly desirable. In addition, if this technology could allow nanofiber shortening to achie…
