Reading and math abilities of Finnish school beginners born very preterm or with very low birth weight

Reading and math skills of preterm born (birth weight 1500 g or gestational age:532 weeks) children and full term (FT) children were compared during the first weeks of grade 1. The participants were 194 preterm born and 175 FT children born between 2001 and 2006. There were more precocious readers among FT than among preterm students, but even the latter performed close to the national norm. FT and preterm group differences among non-readers were minor with only rapid naming showing a robust difference. International audience; This study uses the case of an oncological paediatric service to discuss sensemaking and discourse ethics in the context of caregiving, building ethical competence to provide the best care possible to children. The patients and their families live in paediatric care, some for several years. At length, an intense relationship may develop between the medical staff and patients' family members, albeit at times a difficult relationship. Still, interviews conducted indicated that when caregivers provided the best care possible to these patients, even in this harsh environment, an ethics of sensitivity made a positive difference both for the patients and the medical staff.…

It has been suggested that early cry parameters are connected to later cognitive abilities. The present study is the first to investigate whether the acoustic features of infant cry are associated with cognitive development already during the first year, as measured by oculomotor orienting and attention disengagement. Moreover, higher sedentary time among parents (such as watching television) is associated with higher sedentary time of their children. This case report demonstrates the utility and safety of ultrasound transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block in a paediatric patient suffering from Menkes disease. Anaesthetists, and particularly paediatric and neonatal anaesthetists, have to make a careful assessment of these patients, who are subjected to frequent surgeries, despite their tender years.
