The Impact of Climate, Resource Availability, Natural Disturbances and Human Subsistence Strategies on Sicilian Landscape Dynamics During the Holocene

2022

This paper presents a multidisciplinary summary of the most recent discoveries and hypotheses concerning factors driving the human subsistence economy and landscape shaping in Sicily during the Holocene. A number of scientific papers have recently pointed out the key role played by paleogeography, resource (water, food) availability and natural disturbances (volcanic eruptions, tsunamis) in local human activities. Modern anthropology and archaeology increasingly use biological remains (e.g. soils, bones, wood, plant macroremains, pollen) to better understand how human communities managed to survive and spread. Likewise, refined reconstructions of past human demographic fluxes and socio-econ…

Petrographic characterization of quartzite tools from the Palaeolithic site of San Teodoro cave (Sicily): Study on the provenance of lithic raw mater…

2022

A petrographic characterization has been used here, for the first time, in the study of lithic raw materials exploited in prehistoric Sicily. Our research interests one of the oldest archaeological sites with evidence of the early human peopling of the island (∼15kyr ago): San Teodoro Cave, in northeastern Sicily. Two geological Formations, Numidian and Monte Soro Flysch gave origin to well-rounded pebbly quartzite elements scattered in the marine terraces surrounding the cave and likely exploited as one of the sources of the raw materials for the production of lithic tools by the Epigravettian communities having settled the place. The preference for one of the two qualities of quartzite is…

The small mammals (insectivores, bats and rodents) from the Holocene site of Vallone Inferno (Scillato, Sicily)

2013

The Vallone Inferno rock-shelter is an archeological site located at 770 m a.s.l. in the Madonie massif in Sicily. This massif is modeled into the Triassic and Oligocene sedimentary rocks of the Imerese Basin. Thearchaeological excavations conducted since 2008 have provided a long prehistoric and historic sequence from the Neolithic to the medieval period. From the four sedimentary complexes identified, only levels 3.4 to 3.1 from complex 3 and 4.2 from complex 4 have yielded small-mammal material. Level 4.2 is poor in remains and as yet without cultural ascription, though it has a radiocarbon age of 9450±50 years BP. Level 3.4 has yielded fragments of ceramic characteristic of the Middle N…

Hypercalcified sponges from the Upper Triassic (Norian-Rhaetian) reefs of Sicily

2015

The sponge-dominated Upper Triassic (Norian-Rhaetian) reefs of Sicily yielded the most abundant hypercalcified sponge taxa compared with other time equivalent reefs in the world. Chambered sponges (“Sphinctozoa”) are the most abundant group among the hypercalcified sponges. All together almost 150 species of hypercalcified sponges (including sphinctozoans, inozoans, chaetetids, disjectoporids and spongiomorphids) were recognized in the Norian-Rhaetian reefs occurring in different localities in Sicily. 93 species (30 new, 28 as sp. indet.) of sphinctozoans, belonging to 18 families (2 new: Polytubithalamiidae, Globucatenulaiidae) and 35 genera (4 new: Globucatenula, Polytubithalamia, Rostros…

New data on the taxonomy of the endemic myomiminae (gliridae, rodentia) from the late miocene-early pliocene of gargano (southern Italy) with the des…

2009

The Late Miocene-Early Pliocene “Terre Rosse” vertebrate assemblages, found in the palaeokarst fissure fillings of the Apricena-Poggio Imperiale limestone quarries (North-Western side of the Gargano promontory, southern Italy), document a very long and complex history of endemic populations of a palaeoarchipelago. That history developed in at least four populating phases, which are characterised by changes in faunal diversity and include taxa with different degree of endemism. They have been subject of several studies since the beginning of the 1970s and deserve a particular attention for their evolutionary and palaeogeographical implications. The sampling of the “Terre Rosse” fissure filli…

A reappraisal of the Early to Middle Pleistocene Italian Bovidae

2013

Abstract During the Quaternary, bovids are common elements in the Italian local faunal assemblages (LFAs). Representatives of Bovini tribe are continuously present, albeit with different lineages. Caprini are sporadically recorded by several genera, and Antilopini are less represented, only during the Early Pleistocene in the middle and early late Villafranchian local faunal assemblages (LFAs). Diversity and ecological role of continental representatives of Italian Bovidae varied with LFAs as well as in faunal units (FUs) throughout the Early and Middle Pleistocene. Species richness and diversity peaked during the early late Villafranchian land mammal age (LMA) and then decreased in the pos…

Some species of the southeastern Italian Miocene giant galericine Deinogalerix (Mammalia, Eulipotyphla) revisited, with review of the genus

2018

• Revision of Deinogalerix remains from the Terre Rosse of Gargano stored at the University of Florence. • The material was assigned mainly to D. freudenthali, D. intermedius and D. minor. • The material improves our knowledge of the small and primitive species D. freudenthali. • The study confirms the validity of the lineages D. minor-D. brevirostris and D. intermedius-D. koenigswaldi.
