Earthquake Excited Base-Isolated Structures Protected by Tuned Liquid Column Dampers: Design Approach and Experimental Verification
2017
Abstract In this contribution a direct approach for optimal design of a Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) device attached to the base slab of a base-isolated structure is presented, aiming at reducing the seismic displacement demand of the base-isolation subsystem. Assuming white noise base excitation, for a wide parameter range a direct optimization procedure yields design charts for optimal TLCD quantities. The performance of the base-isolated structure equipped with optimally tuned TLCD device in comparison to the simple base-isolated one is evaluated both numerically and experimentally. In a numerical study the system is subjected to the 44 records of the FEMA P-695 far-field ground mot…
Modelling and optimization of a passive structural control design for a spar-type floating wind turbine
2014
Abstract Compared with fixed-bottom installation, deep water floating wind turbine has to undergo more severe structural loads due to extra degrees of freedom. Aiming for effective load reduction, this paper deals with the evaluation of a passive structural control design for a spar-type floating wind turbine, and the proposed strategy is to install a tuned mass damper (TMD) into the spar platform. Firstly, a mathematical model for wind turbine surge-heave-pitch motion is established based on the D’Alembert’s principle of inertial forces. Then, parameter estimation is performed by comparing the outputs from the proposed model and the state-of-the-art simulator. Further, different optimizati…
Effect of Composition on the Photoelectrochemical Behavior of Anodic Oxides on Binary Aluminum Alloys
2006
The photoelectrochemical behavior of anodic films on Al alloys, containing titanium, tantalum, and tungsten (valve metals), has been studied as a function of alloy composition and anodizing conditions. Photocurrent spectroscopy has been used to get information on bandgap and the flatband potential values of different mixed oxides. Both insulator-like and semiconducting behavior has been observed for anodic oxides grown on Al-W and Al-Ti alloys dependent on alloy initial composition. Optical bandgap values, E opt g , of different oxides are in accordance with predictions based on the correlation between E opt g and the difference of electronegativities of the oxide constituents, indicating p…
Influences of Structure and Composition on the Photoelectrochemical Behaviour of Anodic Films on Zr and Zr-20at.%Ti
2008
Abstract A photoelectrochemical investigation on anodic films of different thickness grown on sputter-deposited Zr and Zr–20 at.%Ti was carried out. The estimated optical band gap and flat band potential of thick ( U F ≥ 50 V) anodic films were related to their crystalline structure and compared with those obtained for thinner ( U F ≤ 8 V/SCE) anodic oxides having undetermined crystalline structure. The E g values obtained by photocurrent spectroscopy were also compared with the experimental band gap estimated by other optical ex situ techniques and with the available theoretical estimates of the zirconia electronic structures in an attempt to reconcile the wide range of band gap data rep…

Intermittent and passivity based control strategies for a hyperchaotic system
2013
In this paper a four-dimensional hyperchaotic system with only one equilibrium is consid- ered and it is shown how the control and the synchronization of this system can be realized via two different control techniques. Firstly, we propose a periodically intermittent con- troller to stabilize the system states to the equilibrium and to achieve the projective syn- chronization of the system both in its periodic and hyperchaotic regime. Then, based on the stability properties of a passive system, we design a linear passive controller, which only requires the knowledge of the system output, to drive the system trajectories asymptoti- cally to the origin. Using the same passivity-based method, …
Smoke exposure as a risk factor for asthma in childhood: A review of current evidence
2014
Asthma is a common chronic multifactorial disease that affects >300 million people worldwide. Outdoor and indoor pollution exposure has been associated with respiratory health effects in adults and children. Smoking still represents a huge public health problem and millions of children suffer the detrimental effects of passive smoke exposure. This study was designed to review the current evidences on exposure to passive smoke as a risk factor for asthma onset in childhood. A review of the most recent studies on this topic was undertaken to provide evidence about the magnitude of the effect of passive smoking on the risk of incidence of asthma in children. The effects of passive smoking are …
Quality indicators for modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) storage of high-quality European plum (Prunus domestica L.) cultivars.
2016
The use of quality indicators is crucial in selling plums in more distant markets and the evaluation of freshness through multiple index is fundamental to evaluate the goodness of the storage technique. In this study we evaluated the quality of two european plums cultivars ('Ramasin' and 'Ariddo di Core' with purple and yellow flesh colour respectively) after modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) storage, through the selection of the most appropriate indicators. The headspace gas composition, the flesh fruit firmness (FFF), the soluble solid content (SSC), the titratable acidity (TA), the colour and the chlorophyll content of plums wrapped with 5 different films (F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5) were e…
