Nucleus incertus contribution to hippocampal theta rhythm generation.
2006
The hippocampal theta rhythm is generated by the pacemaker activity of the medial septum-diagonal band of Broca (MS/DBB) neurons. These nuclei are influenced by brainstem structures that modulate the theta rhythm. The aim of the present work is to determine whether the nucleus incertus (NI), which has important anatomical connections with the MS/DBB, contributes to the hippocampal theta rhythm generation in rats. Hippocampal field activity was recorded in urethane-anaesthetized rats. Electrical stimulation of the NI not only evoked theta rhythm in the hippocampus, but also decreased the amplitude of delta waves. Unit recordings in the NI revealed either a non-rhythm discharge pattern in mos…
Efferent connections of the "olfactostriatum": a specialized vomeronasal structure within the basal ganglia of snakes.
2005
Abstract The olfactostriatum is a portion of the basal ganglia of snakes that receives substantial vomeronasal afferents through projections from the nucleus sphericus. In a preceding article, the olfactostriatum of garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) was characterized on the basis of chemoarchitecture (distribution of serotonin, neuropeptide Y and tyrosine hydroxylase) and pattern of afferent connections [Martinez-Marcos, A., Ubeda-Banon, I., Lanuza, E., Halpern, M., 2005. Chemoarchitecture and afferent connections of the “olfactostriatum”: a specialized vomeronasal structure within the basal ganglia of snakes. J. Chem. Neuroanat. 29, 49–69]. In the present study, its efferent connections …
IL-4 protects tumor cells from anti-CD95 and chemotherapeutic agents via up-regulation of antiapoptotic proteins
2004
Abstract We recently proposed that Th1 and Th2 cytokines exert opposite effects on the pathogenesis and clinical outcome of organ-specific autoimmunity by altering the expression of genes involved in target cell survival. Because a Th2 response against tumors is associated with poor prognosis, we investigated the ability of IL-4 to protect tumor cells from death receptor- and chemotherapy-induced apoptosis. We found that IL-4 treatment significantly reduced CD95 (Fas/APO-1)- and chemotherapeutic drug-induced apoptosis in prostate, breast, and bladder tumor cell lines. Analysis of antiapoptotic protein expression revealed that IL-4 stimulation resulted in up-regulation of cellular (c) FLIP/F…
Evidence for increased nitric oxide production in the auditory brain stem of the aged dwarf hamster (Phodopus sungorus): an NADPH-diaphorase histoche…
2000
Age-related changes of the auditory system such as presbyacusis are believed to be due, at least in part, to alterations of central structures. The superior olivary complex (SOC), a group of interrelated brain stem nuclei, projects to a variety of neuronal structures including the cochlea and the inferior colliculus (IC). The soluble gas nitric oxide (NO), believed to function as a neuroactive substance within the SOC and cochlea, is thought to be involved in ageing processes. Since it is unknown whether NO-production is altered in the ageing auditory system, the present study was conducted to investigate whether the number of NO-producing cells in the SOC is changed with increasing age. Th…
Projection Neurons in the Superior Olivary Complex of the Rat Auditory Brainstem: A Double Retrograde Tracing Study
1998
The superior olivary complex (SOC), a group of interrelated brainstem nuclei, sends efferents to a variety of neuronal structures including the cochlea and the inferior colliculus (IC). In the present study conducted in rats, we sought to investigate whether single SOC efferent neurons project to both cochlea and IC. These neurons were identified by retrograde axonal transport of the neuronal tracers fluoro-gold upon application to the cochlea and cholera toxin B subunit injected into the central nucleus of the IC. Projections to the cochlea were found to stem predominantly from the ipsilateral lateral superior olive (LSO) and medial superior olive (MSO) as well as from the bilateral superi…
Information decomposition of multichannel EMG to map functional interactions in the distributed motor system
2019
AbstractThe central nervous system needs to coordinate multiple muscles during postural control. Functional coordination is established through the neural circuitry that interconnects different muscles. Here we used multivariate information decomposition of multichannel EMG acquired from 14 healthy participants during postural tasks to investigate the neural interactions between muscles. A set of information measures were estimated from an instantaneous linear regression model and a time-lagged VAR model fitted to the EMG envelopes of 36 muscles. We used network analysis to quantify the structure of functional interactions between muscles and compared them across experimental conditions. Co…
Cue valence representation studied by Fos immunocytochemistry after acquisition of a discrimination learning task.
2003
The piriform cortex (PCx) and related structures such as hippocampus and frontal cortex could play an important role in olfactory memory. We investigated their involvement in learning the biological value of an odor cue, i.e. predicting reward or non-reward in a two-odor discrimination task. Rats were sacrificed after stimulation by either rewarded or non-rewarded odor and Fos immunocytochemistry was performed. The different experimental groups of rats did not show strongly differentiated Fos expression pattern in either the PCx or the hippocampus. A few differences were noted in frontal areas. In the ventro-lateral orbital cortex, rats, ramdomly rewarded during the conditionning had a high…
l-[3H]lysine binding to rat retinal membrane: II. effect of kainic acid,d,l-?-aminoadipic acid, iodoacetic acid, and modification by dark-exposure
1986
The rat retina and the different brain regions contain membranes sites that bindl-lysine in the nanomolar range. These binding sites undergo changes in different experimental conditions, thus: I) intraocular injection of kainic acid induces a reduction of the density ofl-lysine binding sites, II)d,l-α-aminoadipic acid injected into the eye enhances both kinetic parameters (Bmax andKd) ofl-[3H]lysine binding sites, III) the intraperitoneal injection of iodoacetic acid decreases the sensitivity for its ligand binding sites, and IV) the exposure to darkness of the rats reducesl-[3H]lysine binding in the retina, thalamus, hypothalamus and superior colliculus, but not in the occipital cortex; su…
Partial replication of a DRD4 association in ADHD individuals using a statistically derived quantitative trait for ADHD in a family-based association…
2007
Contains fulltext : 52515.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) BACKGROUND: Previous research found an association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the promoter region of DRD4 and statistically derived phenotypes generated from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms. We sought to replicate this finding by using the same methodology in an independent sample of ADHD individuals. METHODS: Four SNPs were genotyped in and around DRD4 in 2631 individuals in 642 families. We developed a quantitative phenotype at each SNP by weighting nine inattentive and nine hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. The weights were selected to maximize the heritability at each SNP. …
Population differences in the International Multi-Centre ADHD Gene Project.
2008
Contains fulltext : 71443.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) The International Multi-Centre ADHD Gene sample consists of 674 families from eight countries (Belgium, England, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Israel, Spain, and Switzerland) ascertained from clinics for combined-type attention definity hyperactivity disorder in an offspring. 863 SNPs were successfully genotyped across 47 autosomal genes implicated in psychiatric disorders yielding a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) density of approximately one SNP per 2.5 kb. A global test of heterogeneity showed 269 SNPs nominally significant (expected 43). Inclusion of the Israeli population accounted for approximately 70% of these nom…
