From fractal urban pattern analysis to fractal urban planning concepts

International audience; Fractal geometry can be used to develop a multiscale approach toinvestigate the spatial organization of urban fabrics. First, the concepts behindfractal reference models are introduced so as to provide a better understandingof the results obtained from empirical analyses of urban patterns. Then, differentmethods for conducting fractal analyses are presented and the results obtained forurban patterns are discussed. In this paper, we investigate face recognition in unconstrained illumination conditions. A twofold contribution is proposed: First, three state of the art algorithms, namely Multiblock Local Binary Pattern (MBLBP), Histogram of Gabor Phase Patterns (HGPP) and Local Gabor Binary Pattern Histogram Sequence (LGBPHS) are challenged against the IRIS-M3 multispectral face data base to evaluate their robustness against high illumination variation. Advances in the statistical methodology for the selection of image descriptors for visual pattern representation and classification

Recent advances in the statistical methodology for selecting optimal subsets of features (image descriptors) for visual pattern representation and classification are presented. The paper attempts to provide a guideline about which approach to choose with respect to the a priori knowledge of the problem. Two basic approaches are reviewed and the conditions under which they should be used are specified. References to more detailed material about each one of the methods are given and experimental results supporting the main conclusions are briefly outlined.
Knowledge-based verification of concatenative programming patterns inspired by natural language for resource-constrained embedded devices

We propose a methodology to verify applications developed following programming patterns inspired by natural language that interact with physical environments and run on resource-constrained interconnected devices. Natural language patterns allow for the reduction of intermediate abstraction layers to map physical domain concepts into executable code avoiding the recourse to ontologies, which would need to be shared, kept up to date, and synchronized across a set of devices. Moreover, the computational paradigm we use for effective distributed execution of symbolic code on resource-constrained devices encourages the adoption of such patterns. Cross-diffusion effects on stationary pattern formation in the FitzHugh-Nagumo model

<p style='text-indent:20px;'>We investigate the formation of stationary patterns in the FitzHugh-Nagumo reaction-diffusion system with linear cross-diffusion terms. We focus our analysis on the effects of cross-diffusion on the Turing mechanism. Linear stability analysis indicates that positive values of the inhibitor cross-diffusion enlarge the region in the parameter space where a Turing instability is excited. A sufficiently large cross-diffusion coefficient of the inhibitor removes the requirement imposed by the classical Turing mechanism that the inhibitor must diffuse faster than the activator. Do networks matter? Network involvement and policy learning in Nordic regions

ABSTRACTThe capacities of regions to form networks are an important feature of regional cooperation. This article assesses why Nordic regions engage in network activities and what new organizational patterns of collaboration emerge. It draws on historical data from a 2006–2008 survey of elected regional politicians from the Nordic countries. The article argues that through this process, participation in cross-border networks matters for regional learning as measured by the policy-choices of regions.

The main objective of this article is to examine the consumption of meat in the French dietary pattern. In particular, we attempted to identify the current structure and evolution in the consumption of meat-based products, the sociological distribution of the meat-based consumption, and the culinary systems of food association/substitution in which it occurs. In this aim, we analyzed the individual data of consumption stemming from nutritional surveys performed by the CRÉDOC in 1999 and 2003, as well as the recent European data about the national indigenous consumption of meats.
