Do we really need new medical information about the Turin Shroud?
2014
Abstract Image processing of the Turin Shroud (TS) shows that the Man represented in it has undergone an under glenoidal dislocation of the humerus on the right side and lowering of the shoulder, and has a flattened hand and enophthalmos; conditions that have not been described before, despite several studies on the subject. These injuries indicate that the Man suffered a violent blunt trauma to the neck, chest and shoulder from behind, causing neuromuscular damage and lesions of the entire brachial plexus. The posture of the left claw-hand is indicative of an injury of the lower brachial plexus, as is the crossing of the hands on the pubis, not above the pubis as it would normally be, and …
Recurrent Granular Dystrophy of the Cornea
2006
Purpose: To describe a case of severe corneal granular dystrophy with clinicopathologic and molecular genetic findings. Methods: The DNAs of a 53-year-old male patient suffering from corneal granular dystrophy and nonaffected family members was analyzed by molecular genetic methods. Clinical features, and histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings from the penetrating keratoplasty specimen, are described. Results: Histopathologic and molecular genetic findings confirmed the diagnosis. A new genetic polymorphism is described. Histopathologic evidence supports the assumption of the epithelial origin of the described dystrophy. Conclusions: A severe course of corneal granular dystrophy c…
Retrobulbar anesthesia complicated by combined central retinal vein and artery occlusion and massive vitreoretinal fibrosis.
1995
Retrobulbar anaesthesia is routine procedure in ocular surgery. Complication are infrequent but often severe, involving both retina and the optic nerve. we report a case of combined central retinal vein and artery occlusion, secondary to retrobulbar anaesthesia, which evolved into retinal ischemia and Vitreoretinal fibrosis. This is the first time to our knowledge that such a dramatic evolution of post traumatic retinal occlusion has been reported.
Mucus and Cell-Penetrating Nanoparticles Embedded in Nano-into-Micro Formulations for Pulmonary Delivery of Ivacaftor in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis
2017
Here, mucus-penetrating nanoparticles (NPs) for pulmonary administration of ivacaftor in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) were produced with the dual aim of enhancing ivacaftor delivery to the airway epithelial cells, by rapid diffusion through the mucus barrier, and at the same time, promoting ivacaftor lung cellular uptake. Pegylated and Tat-decorated fluorescent nanoparticles (FNPs) were produced by nanoprecipitation, starting from two synthetic copolymers, and showed nanometric sizes (∼70 nm), a slightly negative ζ potential, and high cytocompatibility toward human bronchial epithelium cells. After having showed the significant presence of poly(ethylene glycol) chains and Tat protein …

Virtual three-dimensional model of the subsoil of the church of St. Maria Maddalena d'Alga in Palermo, using high-resolution GPR surveys
2022
The church of Santa Maria Maddalena d'Alga is located in the historic center of Palermo and belongs to the monumental complex of the military district of San Giacomo, in the ancient western fortified area of the city. Today the area hosts a vast military complex, seat of the Command of the Carabinieri Legion of Sicily. The church is elevated with respect to the current floor. During some maintenance works of the church, for the installation of air conditioners, some georadar surveys were carried out to verify the presence of crypts or tombs under the pavement. The investigations made it possible to reconstruct a 3D georadar model and to identify some anomalies under the pavement. Some of th…
Favorable outcome in open globe injuries with low OTS score
2014
Purpose:.Open globe eye injuries can have profound social and economic consequences. Here, we describe two cases of war and outdoor activity open globe eye injury where, despite a low OTS score,.current microsurgical technology allowed for a favorable outcome.Case report 1: A 33-year-old Libyan soldier had been treated for an open-globe grenade blast trauma to his left eye, which showed light perception and OTS score 2..He had undergone a lensectomy and PPV with silicone oil tamponade. Surgical treatment included scleral buckling,.cornea trephination, tem-porary Eckardt keratoprosthesis, PPV revision, intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, and corneal grafting. Six months later, his VA was im…
Right diaphragmatic injury and lacerated liver during a penetrating abdominal trauma: case report and brief literature review
2014
Introduction: Diaphragmatic injuries are rare consequences of thoracoabdominal trauma and they often occur in association with multiorgan injuries. The diaphragm is a difficult anatomical structure to study with common imaging instruments due to its physiological movement. Thus, diaphragmatic injuries can often be misunderstood and diagnosed only during surgical procedures. Diagnostic delay results in a high rate of mortality. Methods: We report the management of a clinical case of a 45-old man who came to our observation with a stab wound in the right upper abdomen. The type or length of the knife used as it was extracted from the victim after the fight. CT imaging demonstrated a right hem…
Human settlement dynamics and alluvial dynamics of the Rhine River during the Holocene: Geoarchaeology of the site of Oedenburg (Haut-Rhin, France).
2007
The relationship between alluvial dynamics and control parameters such as climate are well known and understood at plurimillennial and pluriannual time-scales. But it is not really the case at multicentennial and multidecennal time-scales compatible with human society settlement time-scales. In a present and near future context, when human settlement may be affected by strong climatic variation, alluvial dynamics understanding is however a major centre of attention to the development of efficient models. To approach this scale-related question, a segment of the Upper Rhine River presenting both anastomosed and braided was investigated. This area also gives us the opportunity to study settle…
TRANSPORTAN 10 INTERACTION WITH GIANT VESICLES: INSERTION EFFECTS AND PORE FORMATION
Transportan 10 (TP10) is a 21 residues peptide that belongs to the family of the antimicrobial and cytolytic or cytotoxic amphipathic peptides. It contains a high proportion of positively charged amino acids (four lysines), no negative charges and the N-terminus that impart it a formal +5 charge at neutral pH.1 This large number of positive charges is an essential feature for the electrostatic interaction of TP10 with microbial and tumoral membranes, which are characherized by a net negative charge and also by a higher fluidity if compared with mammalin ones.2 Here, combining spectroscopic and fluorescence lifetime imaging techniques, we analyse the fate of the multifunctional3-4 TP10 and i…
