2013
In Brussels in 1549 Charles V commissioned four bronze and four marble sculptures from Leone Leoni, to which were added new orders. The sculptor worked on them, especially the bronzes, in Milan, and they were shipped to Spain along with other works at the time of the arrival of the Emperor and the Court. This article discusses the history and evolution of the marbles and a bust (Prado Museum: E-260, E-262, E-267, E-269, E-291), which were sent from Genoa to Cartagena, where they remained until 1568. After years of neglect, Pompeo Leoni was commissioned to arrange for their transfer to his house in Madrid along with Juan de Lugano, artist and dealer in marbles, where Pompeo finished most of …
Another Life
2013
Many writers started their professional lives in very diverse fields before embracing writing, or on the contrary have turned away from writing. The present volume seeks to explore the complex relationship between that ‘other life’ and writing. The aim is to determine whether a writer’s ‘other life’ appears in, influences or even shapes his/her work, and to what extent. What is the part of gestation and that of rupture? A diversity of writers is examined: Patrick Chamoiseau, J. M. Coetzee, Jan J. Dominique, Janet Frame, Amitav Ghosh, L. K. Johnson, Wilson Harris, Dany Laferrière, Yannick Lahens, NourbeSe Philip, Emmelie Prophète, Arundhati Roy, Edward Said, but also Bartolomé de las Casas a…
2018
ABSTRACT: This article involves the study of Spanish posters that advertise the sale of publications printed by bookseller-publishers and printers in the modern world. The array of posters identified and preserved is not extensive, due to their ephemeral nature. However, their utilization is confirmed in documentary sources, references to these posters in gazettes, erudite correspondence, or literary testimonies themselves. I will attempt to demonstrate the role of the poster in the diffusion of publicity for these editorial novelties by considering walls as a space for public communication, serving the purpose of promoting new publications. In this study I consider the Baroque antecedents …
Ciencia del Comercio, Economía Política y Economía Civil en la Ilustración Española (1714-1808)
2019
The chronology of economic ideas in Spanish Enlightenment is well known. However, the most accepted periodization does not fit with the evolution of moral philosophy and political economy in the 18th century, nor does it reflect the alternation in economic ideologies. After considering a joint articulation of national and generational approaches to the European economic thought, it seems important to differentiate the contents of political economy and civil economy to study the Spanish case. Below is a new periodization in five stages of enlightened economic thought in Spain: the time of colbertism and projectism (1714-1740), this of the learning of the science of commerce in Ensenada’s per…
From Theatre to Theatricality—How to Construct Reality
1995
At the end of the nineteenth century, the dominance of language, so typical of Western culture since the Renaissance, was increasingly challenged. As early as 1876, Nietzsche wrote on Richard Wagner in Thoughts Out of Season:He was the first to recognize an evil which is as widespread as civilization itself among men; language is everywhere diseased, and the burden of this terrible disease weighs heavily upon the whole of man's development. Inasmuch as language has retreated ever more and more from its true province— the expression of strong feelings, which it was once able to convey in all their simplicity—and has always had to strain after the practically impossible achievement of communi…
