Melt processing of hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene on the water surface

2011

A discotic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene, was oriented by slow cooling from the isotropic phase on a water surface as a film. For melt processing at low temperatures, an HBC derivative with long swallow-tailed alkyl side chains was chosen. The supramolecular organization in the resulting thin layer was investigated by electron microscopy. In high-resolution mode, the structural study showed large domains in which the columnar structures were oriented uniaxially with an edge-on arrangement of the hydrophobic molecules. The length of the stacks exceeded several hundred nanometers without obvious defects. The small-area analysis by TEM allowed the direct visualiz…

Photo-fragmentation of alkyl phosphates in the gas-phase

2018

Abstract Alkyl phosphates are experiencing an ever increasing use due to the current arising of new applications. This implies their increasing presence in the environment so their stability and reactivity under high-energy photons, which are still unknown, need to be clarified. In this study, a mass spectrometric investigation of the ionization and fragmentation processes of four representative alkyl phosphates (dibutyl, tributyl, bis-2-ethylhexyl, and tris-2-ethylhexyl phosphate) induced by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation has been carried out. The experimental data show that fragmentation occurs through a stepwise cleavage of the bonds between the phosphate group and the alkyl chains l…

Self-assembling resorcinarene capsules: solid and gas phase studies on encapsulation of small alkyl ammonium cations

2002

The self-assembling process of unsubstituted resorcinarenes (1, 2 and 3) to dimeric capsules encapsulating small tetra-alkyl ammonium cations 4–7 has been studied in solid and gaseous states by X-ray crystallographic and mass spectrometric methods. Hydrogen bonding and cation-π interaction as well as the proper encapsulation in the empty cavity of the capsule appear to be the most important interactions in the capsule formation process. Competitive mass spectrometric studies clearly indicated preference of the tetramethyl ammonium cation (4) over tetraethyl ammonium cation (6) and especially tetrabutyl ammonium cation (7). The crystal structures of altogether eight dimeric capsules of resor…

Comparison of spin density calculation methods for various alkyl-substituted 9,10-anthraquinone anion radicals in the solution phase

1996

EPR and ENDOR spectra were recorded for 2-methyl-9,10-anthraquinone (2-methylAQ), 2-ethylAQ, 2-tertbutylAQ and 2,3-dimethylAQ anion radicals in the solution phase. The EPR spectra were simulated with the help of ENDOR data. The experimental isotropic hyperfine coupling constants (IHFCs) were compared with calculated values from semi-empirical INDO, spin-restricted AM1/CI and B3PW91 density-functional methods. The best computational methods for the IHFCs were the semi-empirical AM1/CI method and the B3PW91 density-functional method with a large basis set.

Solute retention in reversed-phase chromatography as a function of stationary phase properties: Effect of n-alkyl chain length and ligand density

1988

Two series of bonded phases were synthesized employing LiChrospher Si 100, 10 μm and n-alkyldimethylmonochlorosilanes as silanizing reagents. In series A the n-alkyl chain length, n, of the bonded phase was varied between 1 and 20 at a constant ligand density of 3.5±0.2μmol·m−2. In series B the ligand density, d, was gradually changed from 0 to 4.1μmol·m−2 on the C1, C4, C6, C8 and C18 bonded phases, respectively.

Determination of χ from liquid-liquid phase data in ternary polymer systems (solvent/polymer/polymer) with hydrogen bonding

2008

Two different models accounting for the dependences of χ and g interaction parameters on both temperature and composition have been applied to different ternary polymer systems (TPS) solvent(1)/polymer(2)/polymer(3). The ana- lyzed TPS have consisted on ten different polymer mixtures in chloroform as common solvent that can specifically interact via hydrogen bond. Experimental ternary phase diagrams determined by liquid chromatography were taken from literature. The application of the two models to the experimental data have served to obtain χij and gij interaction parameters for all the binary ij (ij = 12, 13, 23) interactions established between the three components of the system, with si…

Surface and Intercalation Chemistry of Polycarboxylate Copolymers in Cementitious Systems.

2009

International audience; The Ca–Al-layered double hydroxide, the so-called AFm phase, is a product of cement hydration. It is shown that the interaction of this phase with anionic polycarboxylate ether (PCE)-based dispersant polymers is not a simple adsorption but a more complex intercalation phenomenon leading to the transient sequestration of the PCE within the AFm crystallites. As a result, part of the PCE is immobilized, forming a layered organo-mineral composite, and does not play its role of a dispersing agent. This article presents, along general considerations on the links between cement chemistry and rheology, a detailed investigation of the formation, structure, and stability of a …

Synthesis of New Functionalized Discotic Liquid Crystals for Photoconducting Aplications

1996

Abstract The columnar structure of discotic liquid crystals has been shown to be well suited for electronic transport parallel to the columnar axis. To tailor the processibility and mesophase behavior of such materials, several hydroxytriphenylene derivatives were synthesized. These hydroxytriphenylenes can be converted into oligomers, networks or polymers. Further, they can be reduced to arenes which posses reactive sites for classical aromatic substitutions. A number of mixed tail triphenylene derivatives and fluorescent, low symmetry triphenylene discotic liquid crystals were synthesized and characterized.

Structural variations of liquid crystalline polymers with phasmidic-type mesogens

1989

Abstract The fixation of phasmidic-type mesogens through spacer groups to polysiloxane backbones provided a method of obtaining liquid crystalline polymers with phasmidic mesogens as side groups. The polymer 6b showed a bilayer structure in the mesophase range. The tendency to form liquid-crystalline phase depends on the number and the length of alkoxy substituents.
