International audience; The Scottish inventor of the kaleidoscope, Sir David Brewster (1781-1868), examined references to previous combinations of mirrors in his defense of his own invention, The Kaleidoscope, Its History, Theory and Construction (1858). Sir David Brewster who was eager to prove that his invention, dating back to 1816, was genuinely innovative, dismissed the use of what he called “combinations of plane mirrors” as productive of “poor effect”. His examination of the mirror devices described in the works of Gianbattista della Porta (1535-1615) Athanasius Kircher (1601-1680) and Richard Bradley (1688-1732), led him to the conclusion that they could hardly have been the result …

In spite of its great historical and social-institutional importance, the Italian Society for the Progress of Sciences (SIPS) still have not that historical fame which it would deserve. This paper wishes to contribute to delineate a brief historic-critical account which may provide a coherent diachronic perspective in which historically laid out such an institution, highlighting the relevant load that it has had for the cultural, scientific and technological development of the post-Resurgence Italy. International audience; 'Structuralisme' est un terme qui a beaucoup de significations. Ici, je vais employer le terme ‘structure’ dans la signification générale, rappelée par Christian Puech dans son Introduction, de “système de systèmes de valeurs”. L’idée que les langues sont des systèmes de systèmes de valeurs ne nait ni avec Saussure ni avec Troubetskoy ou Jakobson. Il s’agit d’un point de vue qui est apparu plusieurs fois dans l’histoire de la pensée et qui, pourtant, autant de fois a été oublié. Je vais donner quelques-unes des preuves qui montrent qu’Aristote a été parmi les premiers à penser que la langue verbale est justement un système de systèmes de valeurs.
