The Prevalence of Visual Impairment in the Adult Population
2019
Background The distribution of visual impairment is an indicator of the health status of the population and for the frequency of diseases of the eye. Methods The Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) is a population-based cohort study in Germany concerning adults aged 35 to 74. 15 010 subjects from the Mainz-Bingen region underwent general medical and ophthalmological examination, with measurement of the distance-corrected visual acuity in each eye separately. As per the World Health Organization criteria, visual impairment was defined as an acuity below 0.3 in the better eye, and blindness as an acuity below 0.05. All patients who were found to be visually impaired or blind underwent further indivi…
Forensic multidimesnional reconstruction as based on post-mortem image examination and spherical photography
2017
The aim of the paper is to present the methods of creating multi-dimensional reconstructions used in modern forensic medicine and state-of-the-art autopsy technique. Making use of the computer tomography technology and sophisticated software by the forensic pathologists allows a new standard of quality to be introduced into the forensic medical examination and hitherto unprecedented effects to be obtained. These developments significantly enhance the information available to the expert, particularly in case where an incident involved the use of firearms, the presence of foreign object in the body of the deceased, or advanced decay of the corps. Furthermore, the paper touches upon a subject …
Recuerdos figurados. "Fotos de familia" en Sicilia
2020
“Life is not what you have lived, but what you remember and how you remem- ber it to tell”. Taking cue from the words of Gabriel García Márquez, the essay analyzes a gallery of photographic images portraying “family photos”, made in Sicily between the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, which are placed in an inter- mediate space between oral and written traditions becoming “biographical object”. The analysis of the photographic corpus searches for the connections between the different events that the image has gone through (production, transmission, fruition). It is in his “life story”, in his passage from one generation to the other, from one type of represe…
The Landscape as a Silent Witness of a Fragile Memory in Paweł Pawlikowski’s 2013 Film Ida
2022
This article focuses on Paweł Pawlikowski’s 2013 film Ida, analysing how the formal and aesthetic aspects question silent witnesses about the difficult past using pictures as a useful testifier. In the context of Poland’s national memory, its current political discourse and the Polish-Jewish relations during World War II, Ida offers a significant contribution. The process of scrutinising this difficult past becomes a journey, a troublesome event when a remembrance must be constructed and experienced. The film journey offers a possibility to get back to this period of time and encourages us to pose certain questions: how do sites of memory remain with us through cinematographic or photograph…
Interpretation of journalistic photographs as an instrument of visual literacy education
2016
Images are produced, used and distributed on an enormous scale. However, the skills of understanding, interpreting and using images as well as thinking and learning in terms of images are taken for granted, and thus, they are not sufficiently taught and developed, especially in higher education. The need for introducing visual literacy into the curriculum was identified in late 1960s, but no concrete guidelines have followed. This study proposes to apply interpretation of journalistic photographs as an instrument of visual literacy education. The main focus is on the image interpretation process and the kinds of meanings viewers apply to a photograph in the interpretation process. In each o…
USA on the road: da The Americans di Robert Frank ad American Surfaces di Stephen Shore
2018
Robert Frank’s and Stephen Shore’s photographic reportages and their travels document an identity of the United States different from the conventional representations that usually show a successful country, able to enforce its social, economic, political, and aesthetics models. These reportages represent an other America, far from the stereotypes and full of contradictions: the places of common experience (almost non-places), the characters disillusioned and frustrated by the American dream, the banality of the situations represented, the commonplace, show that besides a winner’s imagery (like, recently, the one represented by Trump but also by Pete Souza, official photographer of Barack Ob…
SNAPSHOT SPECTRAL AND COLOR IMAGING USING A REGULAR DIGITAL CAMERA WITH A MONOCHROMATIC IMAGE SENSOR
2017
Spectral imaging (SI) refers to the acquisition of the three-dimensional (3D) spectral cube of spatial and spectral data of a source object at a limited number of wavelengths in a given wavelength range. Snapshot spectral imaging (SSI) refers to the instantaneous acquisition (in a single shot) of the spectral cube, a process suitable for fast changing objects. Known SSI devices exhibit large total track length (TTL), weight and production costs and relatively low optical throughput. We present a simple SSI camera based on a regular digital camera with (i) an added diffusing and dispersing phase-only static optical element at the entrance pupil (diffuser) and (ii) tailored compressed sensing…
Assessment of environmental AMD risk factors in a population of patients suffering from stroke and myocardial infarction
2010
International audience; Purpose: Stroke and myocardial infarction are common diseases occurring in patients suffering from Age Macular Degeneration (AMD). We assessed the rate of AMD and AMD risk factors in patients suffering from recent stroke or myocardial infarction. Methods: Patients suffering from a recent stroke or myocardial infarction (less than 1 month) benefited from a thorough ophthalmic examination with the following measurements and evaluations: visual acuity, intraocular pressure, fundus photography, Raman spectroscopy and macular OCT. In the same time a food questionnaire was dispensed. Finally, blood samples to measure fatty acids and lutein were performed. Results: 74 patie…
2015
Purpose This paper describes the study design, methodology, cohort profile and self-reported diseases in the ophthalmological branch of the Gutenberg Health Study (GHS). Methods The GHS is an ongoing, prospective, interdisciplinary, single-center, population-based cohort study in Germany. The main goals of the ophthalmological section are to assess the prevalence and incidence of ocular diseases and to explore risk factors, genetic determinants and associations with systemic diseases and conditions. The eye examination at baseline included a medical history, self-reported eye diseases, visual acuity, refractive errors, intraocular pressure, visual field, pachymetry, keratometry, fundus phot…
Two-Step Digital Follow-up of Patients at High Risk for Melanoma: a Retrospective Analysis of 152 Patients
2021
