Large birds travel farther in homogeneous environments

2019

Aim: Animal movement is an important determinant of individual survival, population dynamics and ecosystem structure and function. Nonetheless, it is still unclear how local movements are related to resource availability and the spatial arrangement of resources. Using resident bird species and migratory bird species outside the migratory period, we examined how the distribution of resources affects the movement patterns of both large terrestrial birds (e.g., raptors, bustards and hornbills) and waterbirds (e.g., cranes, storks, ducks, geese and flamingos). Location: Global. Time period: 2003–2015. Major taxa studied: Birds. Methods: We compiled GPS tracking data for 386 individuals across 3…

Developing common protocols to measure tundra herbivory across spatial scales

2021

Understanding and predicting large-scale ecological responses to global environmental change requires comparative studies across geographic scales with coordinated efforts and standardized methodologies. We designed, applied and assessed standardized protocols to measure tundra herbivory at three spatial scales: plot, site (habitat), and study area (landscape). The plot and site-level protocols were tested in the field during summers 2014-2015 at eleven sites, nine of them comprising warming experimental plots included in the International Tundra Experiment (ITEX). The study area protocols were assessed during 2014-2018 at 24 study areas across the Arctic. Our protocols provide comparable a…

On the Use of a GPU-Accelerated Mobile Device Processor for Sound Source Localization

2017

Abstract The growing interest to incorporate new features into mobile devices has increased the number of signal processing applications running over processors designed for mobile computing. A challenging signal processing field is acoustic source localization, which is attractive for applications such as automatic camera steering systems, human-machine interfaces, video gaming or audio surveillance. In this context, the emergence of systems-on-chip (SoC) that contain a small graphics accelerator (or GPU), contributes a notable increment of the computational capacity while partially retaining the appealing low-power consumption of embedded systems. This is the case, for example, of the Sam…

Hpdm : A Hybrid Pseudonym Distribution Method for Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks

2016

Abstract Protecting the location privacy of drivers is still one of the main challenges in Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs). The changing of pseudonym is commonly accepted as a solution to this problem. The pseudonyms represent fake vehicle identifiers. Roadside Units (RSUs) play a central role in the existing pseudonyms distribution solutions. Indeed, the VANET area should totally be covered by RSUs in order to satisfy the demand of vehicles in terms of pseudonyms. However, the total coverage is costly and hard to be achieved, especially in the first phase of VANETs deployment. In addition, RSUs could be overloaded due to the large number of pseudonyms requests that could be received fro…

Impact of accumulated dust particles' charge on the photovoltaic module performance

2016

Abstract This work is focused on analysing effect of accumulated dust particles' charge on PV module performance. In the Dundee University's laboratory, dust particles have been created through epoxy powder and charged by using corona and tribo-electric charging methods by varying the charge levels of the accumulated dust particles. The PV module output has analysed for finding a relation between charge levels of the accumulated dust particles and its output voltage. Obtained experimental results have shown that charge level of accumulated dust particles on PV module's have significant impact on its output and dust particle accumulations are not associated with panel tilt angle.

Optimization of photovoltaic solar power plant locations in northern Chile

2017

The optimization of photovoltaic solar power plants location in Atacama Desert, Chile, is presented in this study. The study considers three objectives: (1) Find sites with the highest solar energy potential, (2) determine sites with the least impact on the environment, and (3) locate the areas which produce small social impact. To solve this task, multi-criteria decision analyses (MCDAs) such as analytical hierarchy process and ordered weighted averaging were applied in a GIS environment. In addition, survey results of social impacts were analyzed and included into the decision-making process, including landscape values. The most suitable sites for solar energy projects were found near roa…

Analysis of hybrid vehicle transmissions with any number of modes and planetary gearing: kinematics, power flows, mechanical power losses

2021

Abstract This paper is focused on upgrading a unified parametric model, available in the literature, that can perform both the analysis and the design of Power-Split Continuously Variable Transmissions (PS-CVTs), which are particularly promising to deploy in the hybrid electric powertrain. In particular, this work is focused on the analysis of PS-CVTs and proposes a new matrix approach for identifying the basic functional parameters underlying the model from the constructive layout of the transmission. This new method does not rely on a case-specific formulation, thus befits any power-split transmission, regardless of the number of planetary and ordinary gear sets and their constructive arr…

Using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and fuzzy logic to evaluate the possibility of introducing single point incremental forming on industrial …

2018

Abstract Single point incremental forming (SPIF) is a promising forming process, yet not entirely accepted and implemented on industrial scale, due to several reasons, presented in the paper. The approach presented here develops an evaluation method for the degree of its industrial implementation. Several factors which will favor the industrial implementation of ASPIF are identified and their weights are hierarchized by means of AHP. To assess the robustness of the AHP, a sensitivity analysis was also presented. Furthermore, a fuzzy inference system was built, having as output the degree of industrial implementation of SPIF.
