Thomas MacGreevy and Samuel Beckett. Affinity and Controversy

Acquainted with Beckett in (1928) Parisian Ecole Normale, Thomas MacGreevy soon became his confidant and a literary mentor introducing him to James Joyce and Richard Aldington. Their artistic interests took form, among others, of the common declaration “Manifesto. Poetry is Vertical” (1932), signed by them and several other poets associated with Jolas’s transition. However, the intellectual attraction between the two was, at the same time, disturbed, or, so to say, spiced, by the tension between Beckett’s agnosticism and MacGreevy’s Catholicism. The article is an attempt to analyze and interpret the poem by Feliks Netz entitled Nie obchodzi mnie (I dont care), from the volume Trzy dni nieśmiertelności (Three Days of Immortality), which is an artistic reproduction of the last moments of Sándor Márai, an eminent Hungarian writer who died by suicide in San Diego in 1989. The author of this poem is one of the most prominent translators of the author of Embers into Polish, a great essayist and expert on Márai's work - hence the vision of the days and hours preceding the act of his suicide is supported by numerous autobiographical reports (derived from the Diary of the Hungarian writer from the latest period), which the author of the art…

Nel 1878 Eduard Winkelmann pubblicò in «Forschungen zur deutschen Geschichte», tre carmina attribuibili a Enrico di Avranches, poeta normanno del XIII secolo. Although the sonnet The Shepherd’s Brow, written by G. M. Hopkins only a few months before his death, has been considered by Robert Bridges an unfinished work, critics have gradually tended to agree that it is one of the poet’s most refined and powerful poems, structurally and thematically. W. H. Gardner has read in it a “Swiftean cynicism”, while other more recent scholars have defined it “conflicted” (Mariani), “ironic and damned” (Feeney), and above all “cryptic” (Sobolev).
