Photoinduced mass transport in azo compounds

2013

The photoinduced changes of optical properties in azobenzene containing compound thin films were studied under influence of polarized and non-polarized 532 nm laser light. Under influence of light azo compounds experience trans-cis isomerisation process, that can be observed in the absorbance spectrum of the sample. If the light is linearly polarized, molecules align perpendicularly to the electric field vector and as a result photoinduced dichroism and birefringence is obtained. If a known lateral polarization modulation of the light beam is present, mass transport of the azobenzene containing compound occurs. By measuring the surface relief with a profilometer the direction of mass transp…

Surface relief formation in amorphous chalcogenide thin films during holographic recording

2010

Abstract This report present the studies of direct holographic recording of the surface relief gratings on amorphous As2S3 films by 532 nm laser light. By giving extra time for recording exposure (more than necessary for volume amplitude-phase optical recording, e.g. Kikineshi, 2000 [2] ), changes of surface relief in the resist material can be observed. This direct surface relief formation phenomenon during holographic recording is discussed here from the side of recording light polarization. Efficiency of the relief formation may also depend on softening temperature of the film material and this influence was studied as well by using additional incoherent light for extra exposure during r…

Spin polarized tunneling at room temperature in a Heusler compound-a non-oxide material with a large negative magnetoresistance effect in low magneti…

2003

Summary form only given. Materials which display large changes in resistivity in response to an applied magnetic field (magnetoresistance) are currently of great interest due to their potential for applications in magnetic sensors, magnetic random access memories, and spintronics-a new kind of electronics based on spin instead of charge. Although ferromagnetic manganites show colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effects around their Curie temperature, the low field and nearly temperature independent magnetoresistance properties important for spintronics are found only at low temperatures. Guided by striking features in the electronic structure of several magnetic compounds, we prepared the Heus…

Rational design of new materials for spintronics: Co2FeZ (Z=Al, Ga, Si, Ge)

2008

Spintronic is a multidisciplinary field and a new research area. New materials must be found for satisfying the different types of demands. The search for stable half-metallic ferromagnets and ferromagnetic semiconductors with Curie temperatures higher than room temperature is still a challenge for solid state scientists. A general understanding of how structures are related to properties is a necessary prerequisite for material design. Computational simulations are an important tool for a rational design of new materials. The new developments in this new field are reported from the point of view of material scientists. The development of magnetic Heusler compounds specifically designed as …

Quaternary half-metallic Heusler ferromagnets for spintronics applications

2011

This work reports on three quaternary Heusler compounds NiFeMnGa, NiCoMnGa, and CuCoMnGa. In contrast to their ternary relatives, quaternary Heusler compounds are still rarely investigated. A very large pool of interesting materials lies thus idle waiting for exploration. The difficulty consists in choosing prospective compositions, and trial and error is elaborate and expensive. We have identified several candidates employing ab initioelectronic-structure calculations. The compounds were synthesized, and the structural and magnetic properties were investigated experimentally. CuCoMnGa is a quaternary Heusler compound; NiFeMnGa and NiCoMnGa are unreported half-metallic ferromagnetic materia…

Magnetic Heusler Compounds

2013

Abstract Heusler compounds are a remarkable class of intermetallic materials with 1:1:1 (often called Half-Heusler) or 2:1:1 composition comprising more than 1500 members. New properties and potential fields of applications emerge constantly; the prediction of topological insulators is the most recent example. Surprisingly, the properties of many Heusler compounds can easily be predicted by the valence electron count or within a rigid band approach. The wide range of the multifunctional properties of Heusler compounds is reflected in extraordinary magnetooptical, magnetoelectronic, and magnetocaloric properties. Co 2 -Heusler compounds are predicted and proven half-metallic ferromagnets sho…

Temperature-dependent resistivity and anomalous Hall effect in NiMnSb from first principles

2019

We present implementation of the alloy analogy model within fully relativistic density-functional theory with the coherent potential approximation for a treatment of nonzero temperatures. We calculate contributions of phonons and magnetic and chemical disorder to the temperature-dependent resistivity, anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC), and spin-resolved conductivity in ferromagnetic half-Heusler NiMnSb. Our electrical transport calculations with combined scattering effects agree well with experimental literature for Ni-rich NiMnSb with 1--2% Ni impurities on Mn sublattice. The calculated AHC is dominated by the Fermi surface term in the Kubo-Bastin formula. Moreover, the AHC as a function o…

Temperature-driven spin reorientation transition inFe∕Mo(110)nanostructures

2007

Using low-temperature spin polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we observed a temperature-driven spin-reorientation transition (SRT) in Fe double layer (DL) nanostructures grown by step-flow growth on Mo(110). Magnetization components along the vertical and horizontal directions were detected with $4∕16$ ML Co∕10 ML $\mathrm{Au}∕\mathrm{W}(110)$ tips with out-of-plane (4 ML Co) and in-plane (16 ML Co) magnetic sensitivities. The magnetic easy axis of the Fe DL nanostructures continuously rotates from the vertical direction at $5\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ to an in-plane direction at $20\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$. The rotation angle is independent …

Surface resonance of thin films of the Heusler half-metal Co2MnSi probed by soft x-ray angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy

2019

Heusler compounds are promising materials for spintronics with adjustable electronic properties including 100% spin polarization at the Fermi energy. We investigate the electronic states of ${\mathrm{AlO}}_{x}$ capped epitaxial thin films of the ferromagnetic half-metal ${\mathrm{Co}}_{2}\mathrm{MnSi}$ ex situ by soft x-ray angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES). Good agreement between the experimental SX-ARPES results and photoemission calculations including surface effects was obtained. In particular, we observed in line with our calculations a large photoemission intensity at the center of the Brillouin zone, which does not originate from bulk states, but from a surface r…

Spin resolved photoemission study of Co(0001) films

1996

Abstract Thin ferromagnetic films are of great practical interest as they can exhibit a different magnetic behaviour compared to the bulk crystals due to, e.g., the surface anisotropy. The electronic and magnetic properties of thin cobalt films evaporated on W(110) have been investigated by means of angle and spin resolving photoelectron spectroscopy. The study was focused on electron spin polarization, spin resolved intensities and band structure behaviour in dependence of film thickness, excitation energy, and photoelectron detection angle. In order to interpret the experimental results, we have performed relativistic band structure calculations for the Co(0001) surface. The observed agre…
