Internet and People with Intellectual Disability: A Bibliometric Analysis

2020

The use of the Internet by people with intellectual disabilities is an area of study that has captured the interest of scientists in recent years. The studies have focused on analyzing specific aspects such as usability, the activities carried out online, and Internet benefits and risks, among others. The reviews published on this matter have been of a narrative or systematic approach. The present study aimed to examine the academic output in the field of Internet and people with intellectual disability from a bibliometric perspective. The cholinergic system in Down's syndrome

2006

The cholinergic system is one of the most important modulatory neurotransmitter systems in the brain. Alterations of the transmission communicators are accompanied by reduction of the cortical activity, which is associated with a learning and memory deficit. Down's syndrome is a pathological condition characterized by a high number of abnormalities that involve the brain. The cholinergic system is involved in alterations of the neurological system such as severe learning difficulties. To explain these alterations, important results are obtained from studies about murine trisomy 16 (animal model of Down's syndrome). The results obtained provide useful elements in the improvement of knowledge ab…

Density-dependent vole damage in silviculture and associated economic losses at a nationwide scale

2009

Voles inflict damage to silviculture by debarking or severing tree seedlings. The large-scale impacts of vole damage to silviculture, both in terms of severity and financial losses are, however, poorly known. In autumn 2005, cyclically fluctuating vole populations were at their highest in Finland for over 15 years, which led to extensive damage to silviculture during the winter 2005/06. We carried out a nationwide assessment of the incidence, spatial extent and economic value of damage and its relation to vole abundance in privately owned forests during this winter. Damage data were obtained with a questionnaire addressed to the directors of all Forest Management Associations (FMAs) operati…

Digital competence in teacher education: comparing national policies in Norway, Ireland and Spain

2021

This paper explores the development of policies dealing with teachers' digital competence in Norway, Ireland and Spain. Using a documentary research approach, the study analysed relevant policy documents from each country over a thirty-year period to the present day. Analysis of the documents highlights historical differences and similarities in how technology in education policies developed during that period and differences in how teacher education was addressed. Despite these differences, the analysis indicates a convergence in recent years towards a common understanding and the importance of teachers' digital competence influenced by supranational frameworks. The paper discusses the pot…

Systemic support and environmental awareness in a normalised environmental management system consistent with ISO 14001

2021

PurposeThe study aimed to determine the correlations occurring between systemic support and environmental awareness. Additionally, the authors wished to establish which systemic factors (criteria of the ISO 14001) impact those dependencies.Design/methodology/approachQuantitative and qualitative research were carried out (survey findings were analysed against documentation research and self-observation records). The authors used literature review, analysis of system documentation, survey research and self-observation. The research was conducted in the period from April to May 2020. It focused on a chemical company operating within the structure of a large capital group and employing over 1,5…

Relationship between effortful control and facets of mindfulness in meditators, non-meditators and individuals with borderline personality disorder

2018

As dimensions of effortful control (EC), activation control, attentional control, and inhibitory control could mediate the relationship between mindfulness meditation practice and the facets of mindfulness (i.e., observing, describing, acting with awareness, non-judging and non-reacting to inner experience). In this study, we tested whether participant status: meditators (n = 330), healthy non-meditators (n = 254) and individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) diagnosis (n = 46) predicted the facets of mindfulness and if these potential effects were mediated through the three effortful control (EC) dimensions (activation, attentional and inhibitory control). Meditators scored hi…

The Impact of Lbos on Investment Policies and Operations of Acquired French Firms

2002

This paper evaluates the extent that French LBO targets’ investment policy and operations can account for their overperformance discrepancy. Our empirical study has been carried out on 132 French LBOs between 1989 and 1994. The results show that the abnormal plunge in economic return cannot be explained by overinvestments or by inefficient working capital management. Nevertheless, abnormal increases in wages, supplies and/or sales price reductions appear to be prominent.

Port expansion and negative externalities: a willingness to accept approach

2015

Port expansion has been seen as the origin of negative externalities, affecting local residents’ well-being and contributing to the poor public image of ports. In this study, the contingent valuation method is used to estimate the costs borne by local residents as a consequence of the negative externalities derived from the growth of the Port of Valencia (Spain) in the last 30 years. As transport project appraisal has become more complex, this technique complements existing methodologies in this field, such as the social cost benefit analysis and the multicriteria analysis. Given the perceived property rights of families that have been living close to the port for a long time, a willingness…
