Improved Salmonella recovery from moderate to highly polluted waters.

1982

A new enrichment procedure for the recovery of salmonellas from aquatic environments is proposed. It has been tested in a eutrophic lake showing moderate to high faecal contamination levels (the Albufera lake near Valencia, Spain), and in effluents coming into a wastewater treatment plant. The new method consists of the addition of sodium novobiocin to a modification of Rappaport's medium (R10/43°C). The new medium (NR10/43°C) allows a better recovery of salmonellas from water than selenite broth.

Comparative study onSalmonellaisolation from sewage-contaminated natural waters

1984

Alcaide, E., Martinez, J.P. & Garay, E. 1984. Comparative study on Salmonella isolation from sewage contaminated natural waters. Journal of Applied Bacteriology56, 365–371. A comparative study of five factors influencing the isolation of salmonellas from sewage-contaminated natural waters was carried out. The effect of pre-enrichment in buffered peptone water was compared with single-step enrichment in NR10 broth incubated at 43dC. A modification of NR10 has been compared with the original composition. Bismuth sulphite agar (BSA), Hektoen enteric agar (HE) and brilliant green agar (BGA) have been used as plating media. Other factors considered have been temperature of the water and sampling…

Dataset of trace elements concentrations in snow samples collected in Jelgava City (Latvia) in December 2020

2021

Abstract The data set provided in this article consist of two repeated data sets of chemical elements concentrations in snow samples. The snow samples were collected in Jelgava city at December 15th with 5 day exposition time. Snow samples were collected in 59 monitoring points in Jelgava city and in one sample in rural area monitoring point as control. The collected snow samples were melted, acidified with HNO3 and analysed with ICP-MS. The samples were analysed Aluminium (Al), Silicon (Si), Chrome (Cr), Manganese (Mn), Iron (Fe), Nickel (Ni), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Arsenic (As), Molybdenum (Mo), Cadmium (Cd), Barium (Ba), Tungsten (W), Lead (Pb). The collected data are with fundamental s…

Developmental defects induced by gadolinium ions in sea urchin embryos of phylogenetically distant species

2015

Gadolinium (Gd) is nowadays an emergent environmental pollutant: it is a metal of the lanthanide series of the elements whose chelates are commonly employed as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging and subsequently released into the aquatic environment. Sea urchin embryos are highly sensitive to several kinds of stressors and able to activate different defense strategies. The aim of this study was to analyze the consequences of embryo exposure to sublethal Gd concentrations. We compared the effects of Gd on the development of four phylogenetically distant sea urchin species: two Mediterranean species, Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula, and two species living in the East coas…

Evaluation of a High School Practical Experience on Noise Pollution With Smartphones

2021

This work presents the evaluation of a practical experience on noise pollution based on the use of smartphones to check if it helps students to better understand the concepts related to this phenomenon. This evaluation has been done with a pre-post design in which 112 students, enrolled in the “Physics and Chemistry” course of the 1st year of non-compulsory high school, have first filled in a diagnostics questionnaire with 5 free response questions about their knowledge on the topic and then a pre-post questionnaire with 4 free response questions. The results show that the proposed practical experience is effective since a statistically significant improvement is obtained both globally and …

This paper departs from the hypothesis that raises that the students of Secondary Obligatory Education do not consider the acoustic pollution to…

Determination of Water-Soluble Trace Elements in the PM10 and PM2.5 of Palermo Town (Italy)

2022

This study contributes to the current knowledge on the solubility of trace elements in the atmospheric particulate matter of the urban area of Palermo. Daily sample filters of PM10 and PM2.5 were collected in monitoring stations within and outside the urban area, characterized by variable traffic density. The bulk of compositions in PM10 and PM2.5 were determined by ICP-MS. The water-soluble trace elements (WSTE) and major ion components of particulate matter were determined by ICP-MS and ion chromatography, respectively. A significant difference in the metals content was observed between the samples taken in urban areas and those from suburban areas. The calculated enrichment factor highli…

Beyond the mean: A comparison of trace- and macroelement correlation profiles of two lacustrine populations of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii

2018

In invertebrate biomonitors of chemical pollution, emphasis has been generally given to mean accumulation patterns and how they reflect varying environmental levels of contamination. Intra-population variability, and how it relates with individual phenotypic traits, has received less attention. Here, a set of analytes including trace elements (B, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, V, and Zn), macroelements (C, Ca, K, Mg, N, Na), and carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) was measured in two populations of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii from Lake Trasimeno and Lake Bolsena (Central Italy). The influence of location, sex, body size, and condition factor was assessed; in ad…

Predicting effective aquaculture in subtropical waters: A dynamic energy budget model for the green lipped mussel, Perna viridis

2018

Abstract The green lipped mussel, Perna viridis, is an important aquaculture species throughout the Indo-Pacific region where production is often impacted by environmental degradation. To predict the impacts and mitigate against environmental problems due to various kinds of anthropogenic pollution, such as heavy metals and eutrophication, on P. viridis aquaculture a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model was constructed. By integrating species-specific parameters and regional-specific environmental data the DEB model determined how the life history traits of P. viridis respond to changing environmental conditions. Using various levels of basal maintenance costs and food availability to elucidat…
