Predgovor/Foreword
2016
Foreign literature as poison: (self-)censorship in the translation of German popular fiction in Italy during the 1930s
2018
Between the 1920s and 1930s, the translation of foreign contemporary novels into Italian was encouraged by publishers, meeting the needs of a new readership, which was larger and more heterogeneous than before the war. However, the sharp rise in the number of imported novels provoked strong disapproval. In a context of heightened nationalism and cultural autocracy, translation was considered a polluting, anti-patriotic and servile practice. The censorship that took place, however, was mostly implemented via a tacit compromise between the publishers and the regime, rather than by repressive institutional actions. In order to protect themselves from sanctions and requisitions, publishers and …
2019
Cat as an animal is a sporadic presence in Vedic mythology and Brahmanic works on rituals, while it appears in a few cult practices of contemporary popular religiosity in India. This article holds that in Indian devotional practices, the cat is conceived as an animal with an ambiguous nature. It also suggests that the cat cult is linked with the need to tame chaos, violence, and con$ict, and to place them in a controlled, orderly, and pacified cosmos. To understand these phenomena, this article studies, from a multidisciplinary perspective, contemporary religious practices in the light of the Indian tradition, and suggests that the cat cult was subject to substantial Brahmanization.
Iperestetica. Arte, natura, vita quotidiana e nuove tecnologie
2012
2016
Somali refugees who fled the collapse of their homeland and resettled in EU narrate ‘who they are’ through the graphic novel Meet the Somalis. This paper explores their counter/story to undermine the Fortress Europe’s discourse. The main issue is to look at the diaspora through the trajectory of the journey and the “settling in” phase. The graphic novel as “remarkable antidote” (Said, 2002) narrates stereotypes, racisms and successes of the Somali people, helping the reader to understand them as individuals, with distinct experiences and separate stories.
Anti-schoolness in context: the tension between the youth project and the qualifications project
2011
Published version of an article in the journal Social Psychology of Education. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11218-011-9153-3 In this ethnographic study conducted in two classrooms in Norway, grade nine (14-year-olds) in lower secondary school and the first year (16-year-olds) of upper secondary school, attention is drawn to how classroom culture is constituted through relationships between students. Through processes of power, dominance, hegemony and marginalisation, classroom culture forms the conditions for a learning environment, and has different opportunities, dilemmas and costs for the students. As classroom culture is negotiated in contextual and r…
Transexualidad, adolescencias y educación: miradas multidisciplinares
2017
Shape-Shifting Tales. Michèle Roberts's Monstrous Women
2010
The book provides an analysis of the representation of women’s bodies and their monstrous metamorphoses in selected short stories by contemporary English writer Michèle Roberts. The author explores the relationship between traditional fairy tales such as the Grimm Brothers’ and Charles Perrault’s, the lives of female saints and Roberts’s counter-narratives, focussing on the analysis of images of sublimed fleshliness and of acts of monstrous violence on the body. The book takes into account relevant Women’s Studies criticism regarding the mother-daughter relationship, as Roberts’s stories question the role of mother figures in traditional fairy tales and hagiography and at the same time rewo…
