Tutkielma tarkastelee lääketieteen popularisointia mediassa erään tutkimusesimerkin valossa. Yhteiskunnallisesti kiinnostavana ja hedelmällisenä popularisoinnin kohteena on saunomisen ja sydänsairauksien välistä yhteyttä selvittänyt lääketieteellinen tutkimus. Tutkimusaineistoni koostuu kahdesta osasta: teksti- ja haastatteluaineistosta. Näistä ensimmäinen muodostuu neljästä kyseistä tutkimusta käsittelevästä mediatekstistä, jotka ovat ilmestyneet Duodecimissa, Tiede-lehdessä, Iltalehdessä ja Me Naisissa. Tieteellinen tutkimustieto on arvokasta pääomaa, jota tuotetaan jatkuvasti eri tieteenaloilla. Sen merkitys näkyy niin yhteiskunnan kuin yksilönkin tasolla. Tiedon terävin sisältö ja kirjallinen muoto eivät kuitenkaan aina välttämättä avaudu tiedeyhteisön ulkopuoliselle maallikkolukijalle. Tällöin korostuu tieteestä ja tieteen innovaatioista kertomisen rinnalla se, miten tiedettä käsitellään. Tieteellisen tiedon levittämisessä popularisointi astuu valokeilaan, kun tavoitteena on kuroa umpeen tutkijoiden ja maallikoiden välistä tieteellistä kuilua. This article explores how students’ informal language learning experiences with English find their way into the formal context of content-based language teaching (CLIL). The analysis is focused on stretches of classroom talk in which native Finnish-speaking students draw on their expertise of English-language popular culture, and use their knowledge as a semiotic resource for producing various types of actions.
