LA CICOGNA BIANCA CICONIA CICONIA (Aves Ciconiidae) IN SICILIA: AGGIORNAMENTO A TRENT'ANNI DALLA COLONIZZAZIONE

2020

Prevalence of Wine Intolerance

2012

Background Wine is an ancient food product, ubiquitous across cultures all over the world. Its effects on health have been extensively studied, yet there have been only a few case reports of wine intolerance or wine allergy. We studied the prevalence of self-reported wine intolerance in the adult population of Mainz, Germany.

Experience of knowledge translation in the ITSAL (immigration, work and health) research project with representatives of the target population

2014

Effect of broadband noise on adiabatic passage in superconducting nanocircuits

2010

With the rapid technological progress in quantum-state engineering in superconducting devices there is an increasing demand for techniques of quantum control. Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is a powerful method in quantum optics which has remained largely unknown to solid-state physicists. It is used to achieve highly efficient and controlled population transfer in (discrete) multilevel quantum systems[1]. Apart from other potential applications in solid-state physics, adiabatic passage offers interesting possibilities to manipulate qubit circuits, in particular for the generation of nonclassical states in nanomechanical or electromagnetic resonators[2]. In this contribution, w…

The Hierarchical Agglomerative Clustering with Gower index: a methodology for automatic design of OLAP cube in ecological data processing context

2015

In Press, Corrected Proof; International audience; The OLAP systems can be an improvement for ecological studies. In fact, ecology studies, follows and analyzes phenomenon across space and time and according to several parameters. OLAP systems can provide to ecologists browsing in a large dataset. One focus of the current research on OLAP system is the automatic design of OLAP cubes and of data warehouse schemas. This kind of works makes accessible OLAP technology to non information technology experts. But to be efficient, the automatic OLAP building must take into account various cases. Moreover the OLAP technology is based on the concept of hierarchy. Thereby the hierarchical clustering m…

Host manipulation of a freshwater crustacean (Gammarus roeseli) by an acanthocephalan parasite (Polymorphus minutus) in a biological invasion context.

2006

8 pages; International audience; Several gammarid species serve as intermediate hosts for the acanthocephalan parasite Polymorphus minutus. This parasite influences gammarid behaviour in order to favour transmission to its ultimate host, generally a bird. We investigated this host manipulation in Gammarus roeseli, a gammarid species introduced in France 150 years ago which now coexists with several exotic species from different origins. In the field, vertical distribution of G. roeseli revealed a higher proportion of infected individuals close to the water's surface and the size distribution of infected gammarids revealed predation pressure on infected individuals. However, under laboratory…

Introduction. Ecological immunology.

2009

12 pages; International audience; An organism's fitness is critically reliant on its immune system to provide protection against parasites and pathogens. The structure of even simple immune systems is surprisingly complex and clearly will have been moulded by the organism's ecology. The aim of this review and the theme issue is to examine the role of different ecological factors on the evolution of immunity. Here, we will provide a general framework of the field by contextualizing the main ecological factors, including interactions with parasites, other types of biotic as well as abiotic interactions, intraspecific selective constraints (life-history trade-offs, sexual selection) and popula…

Modification of hosts' behavior by a parasite: field evidence for adaptive manipulation.

2007

9 pages; International audience; Parasites relying on trophic transmission to complete their life cycles often induce modifications of their host's behavior in ways that may increase their susceptibility to predation by final hosts. These modifications have often been interpreted as parasite adaptations, but very few studies have demonstrated that host manipulation has fitness benefits for the parasite. The aim of the present study was to address the adaptive significance of parasite manipulation by coupling observations of behavioral manipulation to estimates of trophic transmission to the definitive host in the natural environment. We show that the acanthocephalan parasite Pomphorhynchus …

The political aspirations of the press of the Germans evicted from Silesia : as seen in the case of the Grafschafter Bote

2012

The integration process was very difficult for the millions of Germans evicted from the eastern territories at the end of WWII. The numerous newspapers that they published in FRG testify to their unique identity. This sector of the press reflects a large social group. One can find there the integration problems as well as the political claims of the evicted Germans. The Grafschafter Bote is a newspaper aimed at the Germans who were evicted from the County of Glatz (pol. Ziemia Kłodzka) in Silesia. It is an independent newspaper representing the most important associations and it has been published continually since 1950. The study of its content allows a better understanding of the evicted …
