La crisi del dibattito pubblico nell'Italia contemporanea: il discorso populista
2019
In this paper I discuss the current state of the so called populist political discourse in Italy. In particular my purpose is to shed light on some features of this kind of discourse in order to show the relation between language and policy in the discourse of populism. In this perspective I will follow the eight key points that, according to Diamanti & Lazar (2018), identify the actual populist movements, in order to verify if – and, in that case, which – linguistic traits characterize their discourse. The analysis will be focused on the semantic and argumentative aspects of the discourse of some of the most important political actors in contemporary Italy.
Posting for Consensus, Sharing Consensus. The Case of Migrants on Facebook, Ideological Views and Echo Chambers
2018
This study analyses posts and comments on a popular social network (Facebook) in order to investigate how web-users take advantage of participative platforms to post ideologically-driven comments, and how the exchanges create echo chambers. In particular, the study addresses populism expressed in online debates concerning migrants and used as a pretext to show group identities and ideologies. Facebook is thus taken as an example and considered a participatory platform (Boyd 2014) of political (populist) activism and the milieu for consensus-finding. The dialogic structure of comments is studied within Conversation Analysis adapted to online written texts (Antaki et al. 2005; Giles et al. 20…
Prensa, populismo y resistencia. "Crónica sentimental de Esapaña" de Manuel Vázquez Montalbán en la revista Triunfo
2020
In the fall of 1969, Manuel Vázquez Montalbán published five reports entitled Crónica sentimental de España, where he analyzes everyday life to reflect the sentimental evolution of Spaniards from the 1940s to the 1960s and highlights the mechanisms by which popular culture forges the collective imagination, while the Francoism makes it a transmitter of moral conduct norms within a program of populist propaganda. The aim of this study is to go through the narrative construction of the journalistic text and its focus on the populist discourse which becomes a proposal of resistance. En el otoño de 1969, Manuel Vázquez Montalbán publica cinco reportajes bajo el título Crónica sentimental de Esp…
A Spanish 'Yes, we can!' against the two-party system: the development of political party Podemos
2017
This article develops an analysis of the internal functioning of the Spanish party Podemos and its structural make-up. The used methodology consists of: 1) a descriptive analysis of the development of Podemos, based on the available information in the media; 2) an analysis centered on the presence of Podemos in social networks and the mainstream media, in addition to electoral results and polls. The analysis attempts to determine the following: the party’s decision-making process, along with the type of relationships established between leaders and supporters; to what extent the Internet is used as a primary tool for organization, mobilization and political propaganda; and the extent of the…
Más allá de Marx: postobrerismo y posmarxismo. Una revisión de los fundamentos teóricos de la multitud y el pueblo
2018
The article is a synthetic essay that exposes the main theoretical lines of the postmarxist approach of Laclau and Mouffe, on the one hand, and the autonomist post-operaism of Negri, Hardt, Virno, etc., on the other hand. These theories are conceived as attempts to rationalize current political bets by various political sectors and social movements. It analyzes both argumentative strategies from «orthodox» Marxism and the structure / superstructure relationship; and the forms of constitution of new subjectivities. It compares the theoretical fundamentals of hegemonic articulations and counter-power experiences. It discusses, likewise, the scope and limitations of the categories of «people» …

Internet e campagne elettorali: la prospettiva dell'ordinamento italiano
2021
This paper intends to discuss the issue of regulation of social networks as a media space employed by political actors (individuals or organizations) for the formation of public opinion and the construction of consensus in the context of the electoral campaigns: in more synthetic terms, social networks as an instrument of electoral propaganda. The main subject of my essay will concern, therefore, the problems de iure condito and de iure condendo about the subjection of communication on social media to rules aimed at ensuring a fair comparison between parties, lists, candidates in the electoral competition and, with it, the value of freedom and authenticity of the vote that emanates from art…
Avantguarda, populisme i literatura kitsch (la generació de 1930 i el redreçament literari)
2015
Carles Salvador and his generation greatly contribute to the modernization and standardization of Catalan literature in the Valencian Country at the beginning of the twentieth century. The reasons and circumstances are analyzed by Balaguer, who concludes that they were often based on ambitions which would not come to fruition at the level they aimed for.
Performing Authenticity on a Digital Political Stage: Politainment as Interactive Practice and (Populist?) Performance
2020
This article investigates the way politicians use social networking sites as effective communication platforms to discursively enhance authenticity, sincerity and (self-)connection to what can be defined as the “People” (followers/lurkers/net-users). Within the framework of Social Media Critical Discourse Studies, and using tools coming from Multimodal Discourse Analysis, the paper analyses the multi-semiotic elements used by different political leaders (i.e. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Matteo Salvini), to connect with the “People,” and discusses the politainment product as a personalised way to skip the institutional mediation channels of politics.
(De)Stigmatization of Political Leadership : The Case of a Right-Wing Populist Presidential Candidate in the Finnish Media
2020
In this article, we examine the discursive practices of (de)stigmatizing right-wing populist party leaders. We draw on a recent example from Finland by examining how the female presidential candidate of a right-wing populist party was portrayed in the Finnish media during the 2018 presidential campaign season. We examine the stigmatization by the press media and the stigma-management tactics used by the presidential candidate to resist stigmatization. The media representation of the right-wing party leader is highly tensioned, and the media positions her political leadership within the duality of charisma and stigma. In our analysis, we extend earlier literature by unveiling the emotional t…
