Multimodal Communication and Peer Interaction during Equation-Solving Sessions with and without Tangible Technologies

2023

Despite the increasing use of technologies in the classroom, there are concerns that technology-enhanced learning environments may hinder students’ communication and interaction. In this study, we investigated how tangible technologies can enhance students’ multimodal communication and interaction during equation-solving pair work compared to working without such technologies. A tangible app for learning equation solving was developed and tested in fourth and fifth-grade classrooms with two class teachers and 24 students. Video data of the interventions were analysed using deductive and inductive content analysis. Coded data were also quantified for quantitative analysis. Additionally, teac…

Children's Temperament and Academic Skill Development During First Grade: Teachers' Interaction Styles as Mediators.

2015

The present study followed 156 Finnish children (Mage = 7.25 years) during the first grade of primary school to examine to what extent parent- and teacher-rated temperament impacts children's math and reading skill development during the first grade, and the extent to which this impact would be mediated by teachers' interaction styles with the children. The results showed that the impact of children's low task orientation and negative emotionality on their math skill development was mediated via teachers' behavioral control and, among girls, also by psychological control. The negative impact of children's inhibition on math skill development, in turn, was not mediated via teachers' interact…

THE GEOMETRY THROUGH THE BODY: DOING, ACTING, THINKING

2016

The geometry has been for more than two millennia one of the most important fields of knowledge of mathematics, identifying with it for a long time. In education, the relationship between the geometry and the physical world has always been considered one of the main elements for the acquisition of specific skills and competences. In the teaching-learning processes the thinking and the interconnection between doing, acting, thinking is therefore crucial. Teaching through the body may prove effective for teaching mathematics which, very often, is hard to be learned because of difficulties that the child encounters in assimilating mathematical symbolism and, after, applying it to real life and…

MANIPULATION OF OBJECTS AS INTEGRATION ACTIVITY

2016

The visual disability assumes, in the processes of teaching and learning, a particular connotation for the specificity that over the years the vision in the overall structure of knowledge has had. The whole western tradition on the knowledge stood on a "oculocentric" vision of knowledge. The view has always been considered the “sense for excellence". An educational activity, therefore, that emphasizes and promotes strategies of inclusion / integration of students with visual impairment is significant and essential to the whole class group. We present here an experimentation with primary school children: in a closed bag, there are objects of everyday life: every time a child extracts an obje…

LE COMPETENZE DELL’INSEGNANTE DI STORIA NELLA SCUOLA PRIMARIA TRA PASSATO, PRESENTE E FUTURO

2022

The promotion of future primary sc…

2011

LEARNING STYLES AND METACOGNITION

2014

In this paper we introduce the results of a research that involved 60 primary school pupils. Attention is drawn to a relevant issue in instructional research: the potential value to learners of metacognitive awareness. Some implications of these issues for learning styles research are then discussed. The purpose of this study was to investigate how students perceive learning and their learning styles preferences. Through a reflection on relations between the personalization of education and knowledge of learning styles, we will emphasize how the very important issue, for a teacher, is to create his own working knowledge on his students' learning styles, if he really wants effectively stimul…

HOW TO IMPROVE METACOGNITION IN PRIMARY SCHOOL

2014

Educational and psychological research in the past decade has found that metacognitive capacity starts earlier than was initially realized; is more amenable to educational intervention than was previously thought; can be taught to a wide range of learners; and is both inherently contextual and a unique capacity that is distinguishable from intelligence, cognitive processes and motivation. In this paper we will see how metacognition can be improved in primary school pupils when teachers use instructional strategies that encourage meaningful learning, stimulate metacognitive reflection and provide continuous feedback. The purpose of this article is to explore the notion of metacognition with …
