The nature of quantities influences the representation of arithmetic problems: evidence from drawings and solving procedures in children and adults
2017
International audience; When solving arithmetic problems, semantic factors influence the representations built (Gamo, Sander & Richard, 2010). In order to specify such interpretative processes, we created structurally isomorphic word problems that could be solved with two distinct algorithms. We tested whether a distinction between cardinal and ordinal quantities would lead solvers, due to their daily-life knowledge, to build different representations, influencing their strategies as well as the nature of their drawings. We compared 5th grade children and adults in order to assess the validity of this hypothesis with participants of varying arithmetic proficiency. The results confirmed that…
Joint attention behaviour in remote collaborative problem solving : exploring different attentional levels in dyadic interaction
2021
AbstractThe current article describes an exploratory study that focussed on joint attention behaviour—the basis of interaction predicting productive collaboration—to better understand collaborative problem solving, particularly its social aspects during remote dyadic interaction. The study considered joint attention behaviour as a socio-linguistic phenomenon and relied on detailed qualitative interaction analysis on event-related measures of multiple observational data (i.e. log files, eye-tracking data). The aim was to illustrate and exemplify how the diverse attentional levels of joint attention behaviour (i.e. monitoring, common, mutual and shared attention) delineated by Siposova and Ca…
The role of literacy skills in adolescents' mathematics word problem performance – Controlling for visuo-spatial ability and mathematics anxiety
2014
Abstract The aim of the present study is to examine the relationship between eighth-grade adolescents' literacy skills and mathematics word problem performance. Moreover, visuo-spatial ability and mathematics anxiety were considered as covariates. According to the analyses of (co)variance, literacy skills were significantly associated with mathematics word problem skills among the 99 8th grade participants of the study. It is primarily for boys that reading comprehension skill predicts success in solving math word problems, while technical reading predicts both calculation skill and word problem solving skill across genders. Visuo-spatial ability was not a significant covariate in either of…

Chess Thinking and Configural Concepts
2012
The purpose of this work is to connect chess and mathematics education. First, we introduce the idea of configural concepts in chess thinking and then we outline a scheme to show the phases of chess reasoning and how to apply this idea to some conflictual situations. We conclude this work proposing two research problems in introducing chess in mathematical classroom activities.
THE PROMOTION OF FUTURE PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS’ ABILITY FOR ANALYSING COMPLEX EDUCATIONAL SITUATIONS. A METACOGNITIVE APPROACH
2013
When approaching and solving educational problems, those who are about to start a teaching profession, need to involve strategies in order to appropriately answer complex problems characterizing educational situations. We examine one way to promote specific transfer of general skills: a methodology entails the elicitation, analysis and inclusion of case-study as a primary form of instructional support while learning to solve problems. This approach is referred to as analysis of cases drawn from real-world educative contexts in order to help students develop problem solving skill. Learning is supported by conversations and stories about problematic and difficult cases. In this paper we intro…
Assessment Tests in the Mathematics Teaching Guides in Spain. Analysis of the Content Blocks and the Treatment of Arithmetic Word Problems
2021
The teaching guides that complement textbooks have key importance in the assessment of competence in problem solving, because these materials contain the assessment tools that teachers frequently use to quantify the achievements of their students. In this paper, we set two aims: to analyze which curriculum contents are given priority in the assessment tests of the teaching guides
Resilience as a predictor of Quality of Life in participants with borderline personality disorder before and after treatment.
2021
Abstract Background Studies have suggested that psychotherapy improves the Quality of Life (QoL) of participants with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). However, there are no studies on the differential efficacy of treatments on the QoL of participants with BPD. Moreover, the relationship between QoL and resilience has rarely been studied in participants with BPD. Objectives: a) to examine whether people with BPD have worse QoL than the non-clinical population; b) to examine whether there are statistically significant differences between Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS), or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy-Tre…
LEMBAR KERJA PESERTA DIDIK (LKPD) BERBASIS PROBLEM SOLVING POLYA
2017
Lack of exact use of teaching materials and does not correspond to the needs of student leads to lack of analytical ability of students to the process of problem solving. Research development worksheets based on Polya problem solving on the heat material aims to develop valid LKPD, practical, and effective. Stages of development using the 4D model was modified into 3D, namely define (definition), Design (planning), and Development (development) The results of the validity of the learning device in the category valid, obtained from the calculation of CVI are in the range 0-1 and said in category reliably with r 11 value greater than r tabel (r count > r tabel ). The results of the analysis o…
E-LEARNING AND ART OF PROGRAMMING: A CONTEXT ORIENTED TO
2017
Coding or programming is very important for a number of tasks and this is true not only in problem solving but also in the computer science and over. Many skills have to be acquired before to have a high familiarity degree with this science. In the studies for methods of coding, students have a great problem for understanding on how to solve and to develop algorithms in a rational way, thus the expertise on how to solve and to develop algorithms is the most difficult to acquire for all students in whatever age. This paper introduces the prototype of a framework able to running in the web space and to be supported by different devices and browsers, useful to integrate a number of collaborati…
