Optimal imaging of multi-channel EEG features based on a novel clustering technique for driver fatigue detection
2020
Abstract Fatigue may cause a decrease in mental and physical performance capacity, which is a serious safety risk for the drivers in the transportation system. Recently, various studies have demonstrated the deviations of electroencephalogram (EEG) indicators from normal vigilant state during fatigue in time and frequency domains. However, when considering spatial information, these feature descriptors are not satisfying the demand for reliable detection due to the well-known challenge of signal mixing. In this paper, we propose a novel approach based on clustering on brain networks (CBNs) to alleviate the problem to improve the performance of driver fatigue detection. The clustering algori…
Application of capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry for determining organic food contaminants and residues.
2008
Food contamination continues to be a serious problem around the world. Surveillance of chemical contaminants in foods is important not only for public health but also because of the negative economic impact of contamination. From the analytical perspective, analysis of contaminants in food is an extremely challenging area. There is a wide variety of questions, ranging from the quantification of extremely low levels of individual components to the detailed assessment and evaluation of the analytical technique possibilities. This review considers the applications of CE coupled to MS detection (CE-MS) for the analysis of organic contaminants in food. Analytical information on sample concentrat…
A Tool for Energy Management and Cost Assessment of Pumps in Waste Water Treatment Plants
2017
Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) are generally considered energy intensive. Substantial energy saving potentials have been identified by several authors. Pumps consume around 12% of the overall WWTP energy consumption. In this paper we propose a methodology that uses the sensors commonly installed in WWTPs, such as volume and energy sensors, to perform energy benchmarking on pumps. The relationship between energy efficiency and flow rate is used to detect specific problems, and potential solutions are proposed, taking into consideration economical and environmental criteria (cost of externalities in energy production). The methodology integrates energy benchmarking, data-mining, and eco…
Genetic Algorithm Modeling for Photocatalytic Elimination of Impurity in Wastewater
2019
The existence of C.I. Acid Yellow 23 (AY23) in water causes a great danger to people and society. Here, we suggest an advanced technique which predicts the photochemical deletion of AY23. The genetic algorithm (GA) technique is suggested in order to predict the photocatalytic removal of AY23 by implementing the Ag-TiO\(_{2}\) nanoparticles provided under appropriate conditions.
Obtaining and Characterisation of Starch-Based Edible Films Incorporating Honey, Propolis and Bee Bread
2019
Abstract This research investigates the physical-chemical, sensorial and mechanical characteristics of starch-based edible films incorporating three types of bee hive products: honey, propolis and bee bread, in concentrations varying from 1% to 3%, reported to starch. The results indicates an increasing of films moisture, water activity, ash content and acidity, in the order: honey<propolis<bee bread, all values increasing with the increasing of hive products percentage into the control film; aw is remaining at very low values, under 0.4. Sensorial analysis indicated honey as the better suited for improving taste and flavour and bee bread for increasing colour intensity of the films; …
Pixel-oriented land use classification in energy balance modelling
2012
Mass and energy transfer between soil, vegetation and atmosphere is the process that allows to maintain an adequate energy and water balance in the earth–atmosphere system. However, the evaluation of the energy balance components, such as the net radiation and the sensible and latent heat fluxes, is characterized by significant uncertainties related to both the dynamic nature of heat transfer processes and surfaces heterogeneity. Therefore, a detailed land use classification and an accurate evaluation of vegetation spatial distribution are required for an accurate estimation of these variables. For this purpose, in the present article, a pixel-oriented supervised classification was applied …
Estimation of Leaf Area in Bell Pepper Plant using Image Processing techniques and Artificial Neural Networks
2021
Measurement and estimation of physical properties of plant leaves have always been considered as important requirements for monitoring and optimizing of plant growth. This study aimed at utilization of image processing and artificial intelligence techniques for non-invasive and non-destructive estimation of bell pepper leaves properties in the first month of growth. Physical properties of bell pepper plant leaves were extracted from RGB images. The algorithm makes use of gradient magnitude and watershed image. Leaf area as the most important index of growth was estimated as a function of other physical parameters including leaf length, width, perimeter etc. Using stereo imaging, the leaf di…
Numerical simulation of wave energy production through experimental tool
2017
Wave energy is highly desirable resource and recent international reports underline its major relevance on global renewable energy in future. In general, the first step is a correct WEC (Wave Energy Converter) sizing and design. The aim of this paper is a presentation of an application of one experimental tool to define the external floating structure of WEC realized by University of Palermo. This new electric device could be another energy possibility for small islands in the Mediterranean Sea as Pantelleria, Lampedusa or Malta.
Design of wave energy converter (WEC): A prototype installed in Sicily
2015
The purpose of this work is to describe a possibility of installation of a wave converter in Sicily, in the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper we present the design of buoyant electrical generator, in particular, wave linear permanent magnet generator which can make wave energy converted to electrical energy.
Reducing effects of aberration in 3D fluorescence imaging using wavefront coding with a radially symmetric phase mask.
2016
In this work, a wavefront encoded (WFE) imaging system built using a squared cubic phase mask, designed to reduce the sensitivity of the imaging system to spherical aberration, is investigated. The proposed system allows the use of a space-invariant image restoration algorithm, which uses a single PSF, to restore intensity distribution in images suffering aberration, such as sample–induced aberration in thick tissue. This provides a computational advantage over depth-variant image restoration algorithms developed previously to address this aberration. Simulated PSFs of the proposed system are shown to change up to 25% compared to the 0 µm depth PSF (quantified by the structural similarity i…
