Acquisition of skills in critical emergency medicine: an experimental study on the SIAARTI Academy CREM experience

2021

BACKGROUND In 2019 the SIAARTI developed a seven-days course for residents, focused on critical emergency medicine (CREM) in a hostile environment, that grounds on simulation-based education and training with hands-on simulation, high-fidelity simulators and part-task trainers. This project aimed to evaluate the efficacy of this course in comparison to traditional learning programs in term of technical (TS) and non-technical (NTS) skills. We assessed the improvement in TS and NTS over time, and the ability to involve trainees in corporate activities. METHODS Three-hundred and twenty-seven trainees completed the study. Trainees were allocated into three groups: those who joined the SIAARTI-A…

“How Real People Really Need Mathematics in the Real World”—Authenticity in Mathematics Education

2018

This paper discusses authenticity from the perspective of mathematics education. Often, school mathematics offers students inauthentic word problems, which don’t show the authentic usefulness of mathematics in real life. In some tasks, authentic aspects are combined with inauthentic ones (e.g., an authentic context, but the question is artificial and different from what people within that context would ask). Several studies show that students are more motivated by authentic questions than by authentic contexts. Embedding these findings, I discuss issues associated with defining authenticity in education. A first issue is that philosophers use the term to characterize a person’s existential …

Teacher Agency and Futures Thinking

2022

Problems encountered in top-down school reforms have repeatedly highlighted the significance of teachers’ agency in educational change. At the same time, temporality has been identified as a key element in teachers’ agency, with teachers’ beliefs about the future and experiences of the past shaping their agentic orientations. However, research on teachers’ future orientations is typically limited to short-term trajectories, as opposed to long-term visions of education. To address this, we draw on a futures studies perspective to give more explicit attention to teachers’ long-term visions of their work. We argue that the method of future narratives, already well…

Professional competencies in health promotion and public health: what is common and what is specific? Review of the European debate and perspectives …

2015

According to the Nairobi Call to Action, the growth of practitioners' skills can be favoured by setting accreditation standards and by reorienting professional competencies of current and future health workers. This will make it possible to develop a critical mass of competent practitioners, foster training, and increase visibility of the professional field. Through a review of the literature, the authors offer an overview of competency-based strategies for professional development in health promotion. The main research questions discussed were as follows: Is there a shared definition of public health?; Is there a shared definition of health promotion?; Who are the main stakeholders for pub…

Continuous professional development: Elevating sleep and breathing disorder education in europe

2020

Sleep and breathing disorders are highly prevalent, representing a growing subspecialty of respiratory medicine. The term sleep disordered breathing (SDB) encompasses a range of conditions characterised by abnormal breathing during sleep, from chronic or habitual snoring, to frank obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) or, in some cases, central sleep apnoea (CSA) and hypoventilation syndromes. OSA is the commonest form of SDB, leading to many potential consequences and adverse clinical outcomes, including excessive daytime sleepiness, impaired daytime function, metabolic dysfunction, and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality [1]. The estimated reported prevalence of moderate-to…

Continuing professional development: introducing the ERS International Certificate in Respiratory Sleep Medicine

2017

What is the greatest challenge in the delivery of quality care to respiratory disease patients? Is it lack of resources, avoidable harm to patients, or more complex disease presentation? Healthcare delivery has been in the media spotlight in recent months across many countries and the question of how to deliver safe, effective and efficient care to patients remains at the forefront of political agendas at a national level. Education is the passport to the future and the European Respiratory Society (ERS) is in the unique position of being able to work with the most respected respiratory experts internationally in order to design and deliver educational activities to raise standards of train…

LINKING TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT NEEDS WITH APPROPRIATE SOLUTIONS: INSIGHTS FROM AN INIATIVE IN LATVIA

2021

International surveys have stated that each year teachers spend, on average, more than 10 days engaged in different professional development activities. The purpose for this investment in teacher professional development (TPD) is clear: teachers’ competence must develop according to changes in curriculum and 21st century requirements. In previous research we have developed a theoretical teacher competence framework, implemented it to identify teacher (N=263) groups competence gaps and professional development needs. The goal of this research is to link identified professional development needs related to the instruction of 21st century skills (criteria - instructional design, learning goals…

Riflessività e narrazione autobiografica per una cittadinanza digitale.

2019

Within nowadays information and knowledge society, training paths are exposed to changes due to technological development. These technological hints offer a plurality of communicative tools that endlessly extend the possibility of narrating, talking about oneself, telling oneself and being recognized. In this regard, the present paper deals with Digital Storytelling, with images, music, narration and voice woven together, offering new tools to revisit the narration, intertwining multimedia, interactivity and the web, with traditional practices. All this leads us to consider digital storytelling as a sort of modern version of the ancient art of storytelling (Rule, 2010). The educational chal…

Vulnerability in health care - reflections on encounters in every day practice

2013

Vulnerability is a human condition and as such a constant human experience. However, patients and professional health care providers may be regarded as more vulnerable than people who do not suffer or witness suffering on a regular basis. Acquiring a deeper understanding of vulnerability would thus be of crucial importance for health care providers. This article takes as its point of departure Derek Sellman's and Havi Carel's discussion on vulnerability in this journal. Through different examples from the authors' research focusing on the interaction between health professionals and patients, existential, contextual, and relational dimensions of vulnerability are illuminated and discussed. …
