Simple scheme for extracting work with a single bath

2019

We propose a simple protocol exploiting the thermalization of a storage bipartite system S to extract work from a resource system R. The protocol is based on a recent work definition involving only a single bath. A general description of the protocol is provided without specifying the characteristics of S. We quantify both the extracted work and the ideal efficiency of the process, also giving maximum bounds for them. Then, we apply the protocol to two cases: two interacting qubits and the Rabi model. In both cases, for very strong couplings, an extraction of work comparable with the bare energies of the subsystems of S is obtained and its peak is reached for finite values of the bath tempe…

Meta-analysis of time perception and temporal processing in schizophrenia: Differential effects on precision and accuracy

2016

Numerous studies have reported that time perception and temporal processing are impaired in schizophrenia. In a meta-analytical review, we differentiate between time perception (judgments of time intervals) and basic temporal processing (e.g., judgments of temporal order) as well as between effects on accuracy (deviation of estimates from the veridical value) and precision (variability of judgments). In a meta-regression approach, we also included the specific tasks and the different time interval ranges as covariates. We considered 68 publications of the past 65years, and meta-analyzed data from 957 patients with schizophrenia and 1060 healthy control participants. Independent of tasks and…

'Love comes first, and it is ahead of any different political partisanism': How political polarizations compare to other forms of discrimination in B…

2021

Background: Affective polarization and stigma toward individuals with schizophrenia and toward immigrants in Argentina are not new despite its importance and dissemination. However, no research has been conducted taking into consideration political partisanship and attitudes toward these groups. Aims: Political polarization and attitudes toward socialization across party lines are studied in conjunction with attitudes toward immigrants and toward individuals with schizophrenia. Method: Individuals from Buenos Aires ( n = 712) were surveyed for their political partisanship and their attitudes toward Peruvian and Bolivian immigrants, people with schizophrenia and partisans from the opposing p…

Health and school profile of minors receiving protection measures and social programs

2012

2012

This study determined the effect of health and school problems on minors receiving social aid, such as PER (Economic Aid Program) and PEP (Economic Aid and Care Measures Program). A total of 174 minors and 123 minors receiving PEP and PEP, respectively, were analyzed. The results show that 25% of the minors have physical and/or mental health problems. Their schooling involves problems related to absenteeism, academic performance, social adaptation and a lack of school material. There are differences in the number of problems detected depending on what kind of aid measures they are receiving. Minors included in the PEP program tend to have more problems in the areas of physical health, menta…

Ready to Go? Schools’ Preparedness for Teaching and Learning Within a One-to-One Program

2020

Part 6: ICT and Education; International audience; During the years there has been an increasing number of one-to-one programs around the world. In such programs all students are equipped with portable devices, such as laptops, tablets, smartphones for learning purposes. Even if these initiatives are increasing, our knowledge of the impact of such digital transformation of education is still little studied. Based on data from a three years longitudinal study on a large-scale implementation of Chromebooks in a municipality, this paper highlights teachers’ experiences. Key findings suggest that this initiative has been successful when it comes to the administrative and technical implementatio…

Atlas of Variations in Medical Practice in Spain: The Spanish National Health Service under scrutiny

2012

Early in the 2000s, a countrywide health services research initiative was launched under the acronym of Atlas VPM: Atlas of Variations in Medical Practice in the Spanish National Health System. This initiative aimed at describing systematic and unwarranted variations in medical practice at geographic level-building upon the seminal experience of the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care. The paper aims at explaining the Spanish Atlas experience, built upon the pioneer Dartmouth inspiration. A few selected examples will be used along the following sections to illustrate the outlined conceptual framework, the different factors that may affect variation, and some methodological challenges.

An optimum design of the magnetic circuit of a PM linear electrical generator for the exploitation of sea waves.

2006

In this paper an approach to the optimization of the magnetic design of a Permanent Magnet (PM) linear generator for the exploitation of the energy contained in sea waves is presented. This approach consists of a two step procedure: the first one takes into account the stochastic features of the sea wave motion and describe the working condition of the machine under this motion by adopting a lumped parameter model. In this step the objective function is the energy production. The second step optimizes the generator by using the results obtained in the first step as the constraints that must be fulfilled by a design based on a Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis. Furthermore, the approach i…

La Educación Musical en España dentro del currículo obligatorio de Educación Secundaria : estudio comparado entre comunidades autónomas

2020

Despite the fact that there are many studies that identify that the Music Education provides numerous benefits to all those students who study it, the truth is that in Spain there is a regression of its presence in the Compulsory Education as the different educational laws are enacted. If during the LOGSE (1990) both Art and Music Education were compulsory within their respective educational stages, in the last years with the LOMCE (2013) these subjects have become optional. In this way, their presence is at the mercy of the Autonomous Communities. Specifically, this article analyses the current situation of Music within the Compulsory Secondary Education through a comparative study among t…
