CUDA-BLASTP: Accelerating BLASTP on CUDA-enabled graphics hardware
2011
Scanning protein sequence database is an often repeated task in computational biology and bioinformatics. However, scanning large protein databases, such as GenBank, with popular tools such as BLASTP requires long runtimes on sequential architectures. Due to the continuing rapid growth of sequence databases, there is a high demand to accelerate this task. In this paper, we demonstrate how GPUs, powered by the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA), can be used as an efficient computational platform to accelerate the BLASTP algorithm. In order to exploit the GPU's capabilities for accelerating BLASTP, we have used a compressed deterministic finite state automaton for hit detection as wel…

Pieprasītākās grāmatvedības programmas Latvijā
2015
2021
This research focuses on teacher training in the Master's Degree in Secondary Educa- tion Teaching. The teaching guides of the specialisations of Biology and Geology and Physics and Che- mistry of the Master's Degree were analysed in order to know to what extent Education for Sustaina- bility (EfS) is present. Collaborative teams of teachers were arranged so as to promote the acquisition of competences in Sustainability among the training goals and to encourage resources and procedures for their effective achievement. This paper includes contributions that try to promote attention to EfS in Secondary School teacher training. Esta investigación se enmarca en la formación del profesorado en e…
Effects of an eccentric training programme on hamstring strain injuries in women football players
2015
Summary Study aim: to test the hypothesis that an eccentric training programme applied on women football players would reduce the hamstring injury rate by improving thigh muscle balance and, particularly, hamstring strength. Material and methods: three football teams were recruited for this randomised controlled trial. They played in the first and second divisions in Spain. Players were randomised within clubs either to the intervention (eccentric exercises, n = 22) or control (control exercises, n = 21) groups, and randomisation was stratified according to previous history of thigh strains. The eccentric programme was divided into 3 phases, and each phase was composed of 7 weeks. Complianc…
Improvement of the expression of upper limb muscle strength and balance in a group of patients with multiple sclerosis, through a proprioceptive reha…
2022
In multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, symptoms such as: fatigue, lack of physical energy, spasticity, difficulty in performing movements, and motor coordination disorders, and with tremors, dizziness and postural instability are among the most common complications. Cattaneo et al. (2007) studied the effects of stability training on MS patients and described it as an effective intervention in reducing falls risk, improving stability, and strength. Therefore, the present study aimed to confirm early observations by the application of a proprioceptive rehabilitation program targeting balance and strength on MS patients. 13 subjects with MS, 5 male and 8 female, volunteered in the study. A MAP h…
The harmonisation applied to European higher education in Agricultural/Biosystems Engineering
2010
Even if the process of harmonisation applied to European Higher Education in Agricultural/Biosystems Engineering started in 1989, it is still in progress. Until now this process benefited, above all, from the results of the projects of two European thematic networks : • USAEE-TN, whose best results were the core curricula to be used as benchmarks for the degree study programs in Agricultural/Biosystems Engineering; • ERABEE-TN, still working for developing the results of USAEE-TN, above all, at the 3rd cycle in Biosystems Engineering. Another important contribution to the harmonisation of the European curricula in Agricultural/Biosystems Engineering was obtained from the cooperation between…
Biosystems Engineering curricula in Europe
2013
This paper describes the history of the harmonisation of agricultural/biosystems engineering degree study programs in Europe from 1989, when the need for this process was widely felt, until now, when this need was partly satisfied through the implementation of the projects of two EU funded thematic networks, i.e., USAEE-TN and ERABEE-TN. The objective of this paper is to contribute to promote, in each EU country and elsewhere, the process of harmonisation of agricultural/biosystems engineering degree study programs, and student and graduate mobility within the EU, as well as between the EU and the USA. At present, in Europe, this harmonisation process is aided by the key results of the proj…
Brána jazykem otevíraná aneb identita vysokoškolských pedagogů versus požadavky současného pracovního trhu
2021
The aim of the article is to describe a new study programme at the University of Opole, Czech language in the public services sector. Necessity to create non-philological programme is explained, as there are huge changes on the labour market and different expectations of future employers. Changes in the programme were enforced also by a new generation, so called Generation Z that has new characteristics. That lead the teachers to change their previous identities and habits.
