Les vagues de chaleur au Sahel : définition et principales caractéristiques spatio-temporelles (1973-2014).

2016

A definition of heat waves (HW) relevant for dry tropical regions is proposed and tested in the Sahel (i.e. duration, intensity and frequency). The Heat Index (HI derivative of Steadman’s (1979) formula) is calculated on dailydata of 145 West African stations from the GSOD database over the period 1973-2014. HWs recorded inSahelian and Sudanese climates mainly occur in boreal spring, i.e. April-May-June. They are more frequentsince 1998 (+ 8% very hot days, T90p) and they become longer (+1.2 days per decade) and more intense (from+0.3 to 0.4 ° C / decade respectively Sudanese and Sahelian climate) on the end of the period 1973-2014.

A PHENOMENOLOGICAL OPERATOR DESCRIPTION OF INTERACTIONS BETWEEN POPULATIONS WITH APPLICATIONS TO MIGRATION

2013

We adopt an operatorial method based on the so-called creation, annihilation and number operators in the description of different systems in which two populations interact and move in a two-dimensional region. In particular, we discuss diffusion processes modeled by a quadratic hamiltonian. This general procedure will be adopted, in particular, in the description of migration phenomena. With respect to our previous analogous results, we use here fermionic operators since they automatically implement an upper bound for the population densities.

Le colpe della cultura pagana: riflessioni sull'Epistola 69b di Giuliano

2002

The article is a reflection starting from the epistle 89b of the emperor Julian, which is presented as an illuminating document for the reconstruction of the values of the Hellenic civilisation, based on a precise paideutic-religious programme, which takes the form of a kind of canon of praiseworthy and/or inadvisable authors

Long-term efficacy of hepatitis B vaccine, booster policy, and impact of hepatitis B virus mutants

2005

The long-term efficacy of hepatitis B vaccine, long-term effectiveness of hepatitis B immunisation programmes, immune memory induced by hepatitis B vaccine, current booster policies, and impact of hepatitis B virus mutants on immunisation programmes were reviewed at the Viral Hepatitis Prevention Board (VHPB) meeting in Sevilla, Spain, March 2004. The main focus was on universal vaccination programmes with data being presented from Italy, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, The Gambia, and USA (Alaska).

Klasikas iestudējumi Oļģerta Krodera režijā: teksts un tā interpretācija

2017

Promocijas darbā pētīta teksta nozīme iestudējuma koncepcijas īstenošanā, balstoties uz režisora Oļģerta Krodera iestudētajiem literatūras klasikas darbiem. O. Krodera radošā darbība analizēta hronoloģiski secīgos četros periodos, kurus lielā mērānosaka katrā periodā iestudētā V. Šekspīra traģēdija „Hamlets”. Kopumā analizēti 12 iestudējumi, fiksējot laikmeta refleksijas katra iestudējuma vēstījumā un pieņemot „Hamletu” kā atskaites punktu. Teksts pētījumā analizēts no hermeneitikas pozīcijām kā lingvistiski izteikts vēstī jums. Vienlaikus ņemts vērā jēdziena „teksts” kulturoloģiskais aspekts, kas iestudējuma vēstījuma atklāsmē par vienlīdz svarīgiem atzīst visus estētikas objektus. Pētījum…

Stability of radial symmetry for a Monge-Ampère overdetermined problem

2008

Recently the symmetry of solutions to overdetermined problems has been established for the class of Hessian operators, including the Monge-Ampère operator. In this paper we prove that the radial symmetry of the domain and of the solution to an overdetermined Dirichlet problem for the Monge-Ampère equation is stable under suitable perturbations of the data. © 2008 Fondazione Annali di Matematica Pura ed Applicata and Springer-Verlag.

Comparison results for Hessian equations via symmetrization

2007

where the λ’s are the eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix D2u of u and Sk is the kth elementary symmetric function. For example, for k = 1, S1(Du) = 1u, while, for k = n, Sn(D 2u) = detD2u. Equations involving these operators, and some more general equations of the form F(λ1, . . . , λn) = f in , (1.2) have been widely studied by many authors, who restrict their considerations to convenient cones of solutions with respect to which the operator in (1.2) is elliptic. Following [25] we define the cone 0k of ellipticity for (1.1) to be the connected component containing the positive cone 0 = {λ ∈ R : λi > 0 ∀i = 1, . . . , n} of the set where Sk is positive. Thus 0k is an open, convex, symmetric…

A Sequential Quadratic Programming Method for Volatility Estimation in Option Pricing

2006

Our goal is to identify the volatility function in Dupire's equation from given option prices. Following an optimal control approach in a Lagrangian framework, we propose a globalized sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm with a modified Hessian - to ensure that every SQP step is a descent direction - and implement a line search strategy. In each level of the SQP method a linear-quadratic optimal control problem with box constraints is solved by a primal-dual active set strategy. This guarantees L^1 constraints for the volatility, in particular assuring its positivity. The proposed algorithm is founded on a thorough first- and second-order optimality analysis. We prove the existe…

Forest management planning at different geographic levels in Italy: hierarchy, current tools and ongoing development

2009

This paper examines the current status of forest management tools and their pplication at different levels in Italy where the majority of land planning has been and is still being done at the “micro-scale”, meaning that specific local issues are dealt with locally. Starting from international European Union law, the authors review the forest acts that led from the National Forest Plan (NFP) to smaller scales, in relation to their geographic and territorial applicability. Scaling down from the NFP to the local level the various Italian forest programmes and plans are analysed according to a vertical logic (hierarchical mode): Regional Forest Programme (RFP), Territorial (i.e. sub-regional) F…

The texture of tongues: Languages and power in China

1998

Mandarin stands at the pinnacle of a metalinguistic hierarchy which mirrors the vertical basis of power in China today. State language policies have established official minority languages and Chinese ‘dialects’ under the arching umbrella of the Chinese state; yet their domain is strictly constrained through prescriptive standardization. The tension between this codifying imperative and the dynamic force of speaker identity is examined through the expressions of power through language use, inviting a re‐examination of assumptions about the static texture of language in a multilingual society.
