Navigating Stormy Waters: The Triangular Relationship between the United States, Vietnam and China and the South China Sea Disputes

2016

The growing triangular relationship between the U.S., Vietnam and China represents an interesting case study as to how the smaller powers around the South China Sea try to balance China’s increasing assertiveness in the region by engaging the United States. Analyzing the respective sets of bilateral relationships (U.S.-Vietnam and China-Vietnam) hence seems to be promising in order to understand the conflict dynamics in the South China Sea against the background of an often assumed, to a lesser degree examined regional (and eventually global) power transition dynamic. Vietnam has a checkered history with both the U.S. and China, all the while these countries are its most important economic …

Michel Foucault and Dorothy Smith in case file research: Strange bed-fellows or complementary thinkers?

2011

The aim of this article is to provide an exploration of how the work of two theorists with notably different stances could be used effectively to enhance critical research methods in relation to the history of child welfare social work. Our proposition is that the design and implementation of child welfare policies, practices and discourses could considerably benefit from a more historically well grounded scholarship that enables actors to connect their present concerns with the broader historical dynamics of social regulation. The article begins with a statement of the ‘problem’ and our questions to justify our reasons for engaging in this exploration. The article reports on the authors’ …

Radiation Shielding Study of Advanced Data and Power Management Systems (ADPMS) Housing Using Geant4

2008

The tendency to reduce the spacecraft mass covers nowadays all components of the spacecraft. One potential target is to reduce the mass of electronics and its housings. The use of composite materials, especially CFRP is a well known and vastly used approach to mass reduction. In cost reduction the use of standard (non-space qualified) electronics has increased. These commercial circuits and other components cannot tolerate as high radiation levels as space qualified components. Therefore the use of standard electronics components poses challenge in terms of the radiation protection capability of the ADPMS housings. The main goal of this study is to give an insight on the radiation shielding…

La violazione del diritto dell’Unione europea come possibile difetto di giurisdizione?

2020

The reference no. 19598/20 by the Italian Supreme Court focuses upon the admissability, in terms of lack of jurisdiction, of actions brought against judgements rendered by the Consiglio di Stato acting in violation of EU law, in particular on the lack of preliminary reference under art. 267, c. 3, TFEU. It proposes as well the vexed question of interpretation of the notion of jurisdiction which seemed to have been settled by the Constitutional Court judgment no. 6 of 2018. The paper seeks a possible solution that can guarantee the "jurisdiction" of the Court of Justice with respect to EU law, leaving the jurisdictional division of the Italian procedural system unchanged.

The appropriate and justified use of medical radiation in cardiovascular imaging: a position document of the ESC Associations of Cardiovascular Imagi…

2014

The benefits of cardiac imaging are immense, and modern medicine requires the extensive and versatile use of a variety of cardiac imaging techniques. Cardiologists are responsible for a large part of the radiation exposures every person gets per year from all medical sources. Therefore, they have a particular responsibility to avoid unjustified and non-optimized use of radiation, but sometimes are imperfectly aware of the radiological dose of the examination they prescribe or practice. This position paper aims to summarize the current knowledge on radiation effective doses (and risks) related to cardiac imaging procedures. We have reviewed the literature on radiation doses, which can range …

The challenge of personal data protection in the era of digital economy

2018

The actual impact and effectiveness of the GDPR that comes into effect on May 25, 2018 will only be evident in the course of next years. Today, however it is crucial to understand how will the GDPR change the EU data protection playfield and if the new regulation is capable to address growing personal data and privacy challenges emerging from further digitalisation in the long term. The research question of this paper is: How capable and effective is the newly adopted EU data protection legislation to address the growing future privacy and data protection concerns associated with expansion of the Digital Economy?

Facebook’s Emotional Contagion Experiment as a Challenge to Research Ethics

2016

This article analyzes the ethical discussion focusing on the Facebook emotional contagion experiment published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2014. The massive-scale experiment manipulated the News Feeds of a large amount of Facebook users and was successful in proving that emotional contagion happens also in online environments. However, the experiment caused ethical concerns within and outside academia mainly for two intertwined reasons, the first revolving around the idea of research as manipulation, and the second focusing on the problematic definition of informed consent. The article concurs with recent research that the era of social med…

Localizing the politics of privacy in communication and media research

2020

While previous communication and media research has largely focused on either studying privacy as personal boundary management or made efforts to investigate the structural (legal or economic) condition of privacy, we observe an emergent body of research on the political underpinnings of privacy linking both aspects. A pronounced understanding of the politics of privacy is however lacking. In this contribution, we set out to push this forward by mapping four communication and media perspectives on the political implications of privacy. In order to do so, we recur on Barry’s (2002) distinction of the political and the politics and outline linkages between individual and structural dimensions…

Decisiones automatizadas: problemas y soluciones jurídicas. Más allá de la protección de datos

2021

Towards (dis)continuity of agricultural wetlands: Latvia’s polder landscapes after Soviet productivism

2017

The concepts of agricultural regimes in advanced economies, such as productivism or non/neo/post-productivism, have been critically debated over the last decades to understand the transition and diversity of modern agriculture. We explore these concepts to understand the environmentally vulnerable landscape of agricultural wetlands in Latvia that, during the era of Soviet high modernism (productivist agricultural regime), have been converted into polders as part of a mass drainage movement. Today, these post-Soviet agro-polders can be characterised as antipodes in relation to integrity of heritage, ecology and the socio-economics of agricultural concerns. Building on case studies, wider pol…
