Anti-Arrhenian behaviour of conductivity in octanoic acid–bis(2-ethylhexyl)amine systems: a physico-chemical study

Pure surfactant liquids and their binary mixtures, owing to the amphiphilic nature of the molecules involved, can exhibit nano-segregation and peculiar transport properties. The structural and dynamic properties of octanoic acid (OA)–bis(2-ethylhexyl)amine (BEEA) liquid mixtures at various compositions have been studied by Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS), 1H-NMR and broadband dielectric spectroscopy as a function of temperature. It was found that the self-assembly occurs via proton exchange between the OA COOH group and the BEEA NH one; such self-assembled local structures are affected anisotropically by a temperature increase so that the thermal dilatation is more marked in a direction …

Adducts of free-base meso-tetraarylporphyrins with trihaloacetic acids: Structure and photostability

Abstract Four diverse meso-tetraarylporphyrins in the form of diprotonated adducts with trifluoro-, trichloro-, tribromoacetic acids and acetic acid were investigated in benzene solution. Despite similar structural distortion of the chromophore system due to protonation, the respective adducts demonstrated different photostability when exposed to UV irradiation. The trifluoro- and trichloroacetic adducts, and the acetic acid one, showed some common features both molecular and in the mechanism of photodegradation. Phytochromes are ubiquitous photosensor proteins, which control the growth, reproduction and movement in plants, fungi and bacteria. Phytochromes switch between two photophysical states depending on the light conditions. In analogy to molecular machines, light absorption induces a series of structural changes that are transduced from the bilin chromophore, through the protein, and to the output domains. Recent progress towards understanding this structural mechanism of signal transduction has been manifold. We describe this progress with a focus on bacteriophytochromes. A novel photoaffinity label, 8-N(3)-3'-biotinyl-ATP, has been synthesized. The introduction of an additional biotin residue is advantageous for easy detection of labeled proteins. This could be first tested by reaction with the F(1)-ATPase from the thermophilic bacterium PS3 (TF(1)). UV irradiation of TF(1) in the presence of 8-N(3)-3'-biotinyl-ATP results in a nucleotide-dependent binding of the analogue in the noncatalytic alpha and the catalytic beta subunits of TF(1), demonstrating the suitability of this analogue as a potential photoaffinity label. Dual-polarization-pump CW laser operation in Nd3+:LiNbO3 channel waveguides fabricated by reverse proton exchange

Abstract In this work, continuous-wave laser action at 1084.5 nm at room temperature in LiNbO 3 :Nd 3+ channel waveguides, fabricated by reverse proton exchange (RPE), is reported. The sample was pumped at λ = 808 nm in either σ or π-polarized configurations, TE- and TM-pumping schemes, being the laser emission π-polarized at all power levels. The laser characteristics, as function of the pumping scheme (TE or TM), have been obtained. In both cases, the laser emission was stable, without any reduction in the output power even under continuous pump operation at maximum power at room temperature, indicating high resistance to photorefractive damage.
The next-generation liquid-scintillator neutrino observatory LENA

We propose the liquid-scintillator detector LENA (Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy) as a next-generation neutrino observatory on the scale of 50 kt. The outstanding successes of the Borexino and KamLAND experiments demonstrate the large potential of liquid-scintillator detectors in low-energy neutrino physics. LENA's physics objectives comprise the observation of astrophysical and terrestrial neutrino sources as well as the investigation of neutrino oscillations. βDelayed γRay spectroscopy of heavy neutron rich nuclei “south” of lead

Relativistic projectile fragmentation of a 208Pb primary beam has been used to produce neutron-rich nuclei with proton-holes relative to the Z = 82 shell closure, i.e., “south” of Pb. βDelayed γRay spectroscopy allows to investigate the structural properties of such nuclei with A ~ 195 → 205. The current work presents transitions de-exciting excited states in 204Au, which are the first spectroscopic information on this N = 125 isotone. Precision Measurement of the Mass and Lifetime of the Ξ[0 over b] Baryon

Using a proton-proton collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$ collected by LHCb at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, about 3800 $\Xi_b^0\to\Xi_c^+\pi^-$, $\Xi_c^+\to pK^-\pi^+$ signal decays are reconstructed. From this sample, the first measurement of the $\Xi_b^0$ baryon lifetime is made, relative to that of the $\Lambda_b^0$ baryon. The mass differences $M(\Xi_b^0)-M(\Lambda_b^0)$ and $M(\Xi_c^+)-M(\Lambda_c^+)$ are also measured with precision more than four times better than the current world averages. The resulting values are $\frac{\tau_{\Xi_b^0}}{\tau_{\Lambda_b^0}} = 1.006\pm0.018\pm0.010$, $M(\Xi_b^0) - M(\Lambda_b^0) = 172.44\pm0.39\pm…
