Organisational responses to regulatory pressure: A case study of a Norwegian Research University’s strategic compliance to GDPR
2020
Master's thesis in Innovative governance and public management (ME523) This thesis study seeks to test Oliver’s (1991) theory for prediction of Strategic Responses to Institutional Processes, against the case of initial responses taken by a Norwegian research university when faced with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of European Union (EU).This thesis explores how different parts of the same organisation respond to and manage institutional pressure. It uses a case study of a Norwegian research university’s response to the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). An exploratory case study design frame was used to address the research question, and qualitative dat…
The formal organization structure of research innovation centers: a case-study in search of characteristics and an explanation
2020
Master's thesis in Innovative governance and public management (ME523) This study sheds light on research innovation centers in a Norwegian setting. Research innovation centers are a hybrid of research groups and innovation centers and belong to the higher education (HE) sector. The aim of this study is to identify the formal organization structure oftwo cases of research innovation centers and to find a suitable explanation through the analysis of its institutional pillars, according to W. R. Scott (2014). In a qualitative case-analysis it was found that the two cases share most of their characteristics in the formal organization structure. The main findings in both cases are a) a low leve…
Dynamic Performance Management
2016
This book explores how to design and implement planning & control (P&C) systems that can help organizations to manage their growth and restructuring processes in a sustainability perspective. More specifically, the book shows how to develop system dynamics models that can better support an understanding of: -What is organizational performance and how to frame and measure it; -How to identify and map the processes underlying performance; -How to d…

Using System Dynamics to Assess a Web 2.0 Governance Model for Public Service Delivery
2011
In the last decade Public Administrations (PA) have introduced new governance models to design, implement and deliver public services to citizens. Such models have been also driven by the New Public Management (NPM) movement, which contributed to increase the pressure on PA, of both central governments and communities, to design more citizen-centric oriented services aimed to improve PA outcomes, efficiency and accountability. A key-lever on which PA can act on to reach the above goals is the use of WEB 2.0 technologies, which can enhance a fruitful collaboration between citizens and PA, not only in an ex-post analysis, but also, and in particular, in an ex-ante phase, letting the final use…
The Reform and Innovation as Rhetoric and Method
2018
We start from an observation from a well-known Swedish organisational analyst, Nils Brunsson, which reads like irony but feels like reality: the only guaranteed outcome of (organisational) reform is the next reform. What Brunsson calls ‘the reform of reform’ will be – all too – familiar to many readers, particularly those working in the public sector. Given repeated exposure to permanent reorganization – brought in under the mantel of reform and innovation – it is tempting to ascribe this permanent revolution to one or both of two causes: the failure of previous reform attempts and/or the need of senior managers to demonstrate their ‘transformative’ effects upon their organization in order …
