Antibiotic Resistance Profiling, Analysis of Virulence Aspects and Molecular Genotyping of Staphylococcus aureus Isolated in Sicily, Italy

2018

Abstract Staphylococcus aureus is the major cause of foodborne diseases worldwide. In this retrospective study, 84 S. aureus strains were characterized. The collection comprises 78 strains isolated during 1998 and 2014 from dairy products and tissue samples from livestock bred for dairy production in Sicily. One isolate was obtained from a pet (dog), one from an exotic animal (a circus elephant), and four human isolates were obtained during a severe food poisoning outbreak that occurred in Sicily in 2015. All the strains were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), for antibiotic resistance and presence of toxin genes. PFGE results showed 10 different pulsotypes, with thre…

Two cases of monomicrobial intraabdominal abscesses due to KPC - 3 Klebsiella pneumoniaeST258 clone

2011

Abstract Background Knowledge of the etiology of pyogenic liver and pancreatic abscesses is an important factor in determining the success of combined surgical and antibiotic treatment. Literature shows geographical variations in the prevalence and distribution of causative organisms, and the spread of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing bacteria is an emerging cause of abdominal infections. Case presentation We herein describe two cases of intra-abdominal abscesses due to monomicrobial infection by Klebsiella pneumoniae Sequence Type 258 producing K. pneumoniae carbapenemase 3 (KPC-Kp). In case 1, a 50-year-old HIV-negative Italian woman with chronic pancreatitis showed infection…

Glycoprotein and ganglioside changes in human trophoblasts after exposure to pulsed doppler ultrasound

1995

Changes in glycoprotein and ganglioside composition in human trophoblasts (eighth week of gestation) after in vitro exposure to pulsed Doppler ultrasound (pulse duration 1.22 microseconds; repetition frequency 11.1 kHz; center frequency 4 MHz; ISPPA = 175.5 W/cm2; ISPTA = 0.59 W/cm2) were investigated. Evacuated trophoblasts were divided in two halves and insonated for 10 min on top of a 6-cm layer of 5% gelatin in 50-mL tubes (Falcon) at 37 degrees C. One half of each trophoblast was sham insonated and served as an internal control. After insonation trophoblasts were maintained at 37 degrees C for 24 h. Glycoproteins were detected using alpha-D-mannose specific lectins from Galanthus nival…

Persistent Endemicity of Salmonella bongori 48:z 35 :− in Southern Italy: Molecular Characterization of Human, Animal, and Environmental Isolates

2002

ABSTRACT From 1984 to 1999, we collected 31 isolates of the rare serovar Salmonella bongori 48:z 35 :− in southern Italy. Twenty-four of the isolates were from cases of acute enteritis in humans. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis showed that all but one of our isolates were at least 80% similar. Our findings suggest that genetically related S. bongori 48:z 35 :− strains are endemically circulating in southern Italy.

Color doppler ultrasonography of soft-tissue masses

1998

Purpose: To evaluate the capability of color Doppler ultrasonography to differentiate between benign and malignant soft-tissue tumors. Material and Methods: We reviewed the ultrasonographic (US) and color Doppler (CD) findings in 46 consecutive patients with a palpable periskeletal mass. The presence of 3 or more vascular hila and of tortuous and irregular internal vessels within the lesions was considered an indication of malignancy. The CD diagnosis was compared with that obtained at US alone. Results: The sensitivity and specificity of CD were respectively 85% and 92%; these values were higher than those obtained at US alone, respectively 75% and 50%. Arteriovenous malformations present…

Combined treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa with intense pulsed light (IPL) and radiofrequency (RF)

2019

BACKGROUND Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic inflammatory disease with high burden. Treatment options are often unsatisfactory. We assessed the effect of a combination therapy of intense pulsed light (IPL) and radiofrequency (RF). METHODS The explorative study included 47 patients and was performed as a prospective, monocentric, randomized, three-arm parallel-group design trial with a prior 12 weeks observation period. Treatment arms were IPL and RF monotherapies or IPL + RF combination therapy. After 12 weeks, all patients received IPL + RF for additional 12 weeks (cross-over). Primary endpoint was the change in active lesion numbers, secondary endpoint the change in Dermatology Qualit…

Centrifugal (inside-out) enhancement of liver hemangiomas: a possible atypical appearance on contrast-enhanced US.

2007

Abstract Objective To report the prevalence and to describe the atypical centrifugal (inside-out) appearance of contrast-enhancement of liver hemangiomas on contrast-enhanced sonography. Materials and methods Baseline and SonoVue ® -enhanced ultrasonography of 92 patients with 158 liver hemangiomas – considered atypical at grey-scale examination and confirmed by computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound follow-up – were reviewed in consensus by two experienced radiologists, who evaluated baseline echogenicity and the dynamic enhancement pattern of each lesion looking for the presence of central enhancing foci in the arterial phase followed by a centrifugal (inside-out) …

Electromechanical Numerical Analysis of an Air-Core Pulsed Alternator via Equivalent Network Formulation

2017

In this paper, the numerical analysis on an air-core pulsed alternator is presented. Since compulsators are characterized by very fast electromechanical transients, their accurate analysis requires strong coupling between the equations governing the electrical and the mechanical behaviors. The device is investigated by using a dedicated numerical code capable to take into account eddy currents, compensating windings, as well as the excitation/control circuits. Furthermore, the code is capable of modeling centrifugal forces and vibrations acting on the shaft due to electric and mechanical unbalances or to misalignments of the shaft from its centered position. This makes the code a very power…

Comparison of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and whole-genome-sequencing-based typing confirms the accuracy of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis for…

2020

Summary Aim To determine whether pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) accurately recognizes isolates belonging to clusters defined by techniques based on whole-genome sequencing (WGS) using Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a model. Methods We selected 65 isolates of ST395 P. aeruginosa isolated in seven European hospitals between 1998 and 2012. Isolates were typed by PFGE and sequenced by WGS. A core genome multi-locus sequence typing (cgMLST) analysis based on 3831 genes was performed with a homemade pipeline. Findings PFGE identified eight pulsotypes and cgMLST differentiated nine clusters and nine singletons. Five cgMLST clusters and pulsotypes (31/65 isolates) coincided perfectly. Isolates …

An Update of the Evolving Epidemic of blaKPC Carrying Klebsiella pneumoniae in Sicily, Italy, 2014: Emergence of Multiple Non-ST258 Clones

2015

Background: In Italy, Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase producing K. pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) strains are highly endemic and KPC producing CC258 is reported as the widely predominating clone. In Palermo, Italy, previous reports have confirmed this pattern. However, recent preliminary findings suggest that an epidemiological change is likely ongoing towards a polyclonal KPC-Kp spread. Here we present the results of molecular typing of 94 carbapenem non susceptible K. pneumoniae isolates detected during 2014 in the three different hospitals in Palermo, Italy. Methods and Results: Ninety-four consecutive, non replicate carbapenem non susceptible isolates were identified in the three largest acute…
