RAPP-children: A new tool for assessing quality of life in patients with asthma and rhinitis

2020

Background: RhinAsthma Patient Perspective (RAPP) is a short, validated questionnaire for assessing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adult patients with comorbid asthma and rhinitis, while a paediatric version is still not available. Objective: The current study aimed to develop and validate the RAPP-children questionnaire. Methods: RAPP-children was derived by combining RhinAsthma-children subscales into five unique items. At baseline (T0) and after 30 days (T1), 150 children (6-11 years) with comorbid asthma (predominantly intermittent or mild persistent) and rhinitis were given the following: RAPP-children, RhinAsthma-children, Paediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (PA…

Synthesis, structural characterization, anti-proliferative and antimicrobial activity of binuclear and mononuclear Pt(II) complexes with perfluoroalk…

2018

Abstract In this paper we report the synthesis of four Pt(II) complexes with 5-perfluoroalkyl-1,2,4-oxadiazolyl-pyridine and 3-perfluoroalkyl-1-methyl-1,2,4-triazolyl-pyridine ligands. Two binuclear complexes [PtCl(pfibap)2](µ-Cl)2 (1), [Pt2(µ-Cl)2(pfioap)4]Cl2 (2), and two mononuclear [PtCl2(pfptp)] (3), [PtCl2(pfhtp)2] (4), were synthesized with the ligands: 2-(5-perfluoropropyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole-3yl)-pyridine (pfpop), 2-(5-perfluoroheptyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole-3yl)-pyridine (pfhop), 2-(3-perfluoropropyl-1-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5yl)-pyridine (pfptp), 2-(3-perfluoroheptyl-1-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-5yl)-pyridine (pfhtp), and were structurally characterized. All complexes were tested in vitro on th…

Endotyping Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis in Children: A Cluster Analysis.

2022

BackgroundSeasonal Allergic Rhinitis (SAR) is a heterogeneous inflammatory disease. We hypothesized that a cluster analysis based on the evaluation of cytokines in nasal lavage (NL) could characterize distinctive SAR endotypes in children.MethodsThis cross-sectional study enrolled 88 children with SAR. Detailed medical history was obtained by well-trained physicians. Quality of life and sleep quality were assessed through standardized questionnaires [Pediatric Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (PRQLQ) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) respectively]. Children were grouped through K-means clustering using Interleukin (IL)-5, IL-17, IL-23, and Interferon (INF)-γ in NL.R…

Photosynthesized silver-polyaminocyclodextrin nanocomposites as promising antibacterial agents with improved activity

2016

Ag nanocomposites were prepared by photoreduction of ammoniacal silver acetate in the presence of poly-{6-[3-(2-(3-aminopropylamino)ethylamino)propylamino]}-(6-deoxy)-β-CD (amCD). The obtained systems were characterized by means of various complementary techniques (UV-vis, FT-IR, TEM, SAED). In particular, FT-IR spectroscopy evidenced a partial oxidative degradation of the polyamine branches of the capping auxiliary, due to the fact that these groups function as a sacrificial reducing agent in the photoinduced formation of the Ag metal core. TEM and SAED micrographs showed that the Ag cores possess a relatively low polydispersity and a significantly crystalline character. The Ag–amCD system…

Relationship between rhinitis duration and worsening of nasal function

2008

BackgroundWhile it is well known that asthma is characterized by airway remodeling, few studies instead have investigated this issue in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR).ObjectiveThe aim of the study was to evaluate nasal function, ie, nasal airflow, in a cohort of patients with persistent AR (PER).MethodsOne hundred patients, 50 with short-term and 50 with long-term PER, were prospectively and consecutively evaluated, clinically evaluated by visit, skin prick test, and rhinomanometry.ResultsNasal airflow values were significantly lower (median flow: 348 mL/sec) in patients with long-term rhinitis (median duration nine years) as compared to patients with short-term (median duration one y…

Radiofrequency volumetric tissue reduction (RFVTR) of inferior turbinates: a new method in the treatment of chronic nasal obstruction.

2001

Twenty-two Caucasians (16 male and 6 female) with chronic bilateral nasal obstruction due to hypertrophic inferior turbinates were followed up over a three-month period. They were assessed by clinical examination, as active anterior rhinometry, and acoustic rhinometry before and after topical decongestion, preoperatively and three months after surgery. All patients were treated by application of radiofrequency-volumetric-tissue reduction (RFVTR, or somnoplasty) to both inferior turbinates. Initial postoperative edematous response disappeared during the first week after RFVTR. Three months postoperatively 20 of 22 patients (91%) reported subjective improvement of nasal patency. The average …

Acoustic rhinometry in pre-school children.

1993

Acoustic rhinometry was performed in 35 normal nose-breathing children between 3 and 6 years. The average cross-sectional areas at the nasal valve, at the anterior end of the turbinates, and in the nasopharynx were 0.34 +/- 0.06 cm2, 0.35 +/- 0.08 cm2 and 1.37 +/- 0.48 cm2 respectively. The average minimal cross-sectional area was 0.29 +/- 0.06 cm2. The minimal cross-sectional area was located at the nasal valve in 14 and at the anterior end of nasal turbinates in 21 of the 35 children. As would be expected, the cross-sectional areas at different sites of the nasal cavity increased with increasing age of the children. But, whereas the minimal cross-sectional area increased by 0.024 cm2 per …

Research of genetic and molecular determinants involved in the nodulated root system architecture of legumes and contributing to improved nitrogen nu…

2016

Grain legume pulse crops are of great interest to allow a production of seeds high nutritional value without any contribution of nitrate fertilizer. The nitrogen nutrition of legumes depends indeed mainly on the fixation in nodules of atmospheric dinitrogen through the plant-rhizobium symbiosis, and to a lesser extent, absorption by roots of soil mineral nitrogen.A better understanding has been obtained on the genetic control of the development of roots and nodules and on their impact on nitrogen nutrition. High genetic variability of these characters has been detected, and the existence of genetic correlations between them demonstrated. A quantitative genetic approach has identified severa…

Olfactory function in chronic rhinitis subtypes: Any differences?

2018

Introduction: Olfactory dysfunction is a common problem in rhinological disease, but it has been few evaluated among patients with different chronic rhinitis subtypes. The aim of this study was to assess olfactory function in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR), non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) and mixed rhinitis (MR). Materials and methods: A total of 122 patients with AR, NAR, and MR were included in the study. Sniffin' Sticks test was applied to all groups. The study groups were compared in terms of odor scores and an association between olfactory dysfunction and rhinitis grading, according to ARIA (Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma) criteria, was also investigated. Results: A signi…
