Baseline design of the thermal blocking filters for the X-IFU detector on board ATHENA
2014
ATHENA is an advanced X-ray observatory designed by a large European consortium to address the science theme "Hot and Energetic Universe" recently selected by ESA for L2 – the second Large-class mission within the Cosmic Vision science program (launch scheduled in 2028). One of the key instruments of the mission is the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU), an array of Transition Edge Sensor (TES) micro-calorimeters with high energy resolution (2.5 eV @ 6 keV) in the energy range 0.2÷12 keV, operating at the focal plane of a large effective area high angular resolution (5" HEW) grazing incidence X-ray telescope. The X-IFU operates at temperatures below 100 mK and thus requires a sophisticated c…
Dilatation Sites: Fibrous Veins, Strain Shadows, Strain Fringes and Boudins
1998
Many deformed rocks contain sites with a deviant mineralogy and fabric, interpreted as an effect of rearrangement of material by local dilatation and precipitation during deformation. Such ‘dilatation sites’ can be isolated and elongate (veins), flanking rigid objects (strain shadows) or occur in the neck of boudinaged layers or elongate crystals (Fig. 6.1). Strain shadows are also referred to in the literature as pressure shadows. Most veins and many strain shadows and boudin necks have sharp contacts with the wall rock and may form by precipitation of material from an aqueous solution in a fracture, as outlined below. Such sites are usually filled with polycrystalline material which may b…
"Per via di levare". Scavare e sottrarre in architettura
2014
The 15 March 2007 explosive crisis at Stromboli Volcano, Italy: assessing physical parameters through a multidisciplinary approach
2011
Basaltic volcanoes are dominated by lava emission and mild explosive activity. Nevertheless, many basaltic systems exhibit, from time to time, poorly documented and little-understood violent explosions. A short-lived, multiblast explosive crisis (paroxysmal explosion) occurred on 15 March 2007 during an effusive eruptive crisis at Stromboli (Italy). The explosive crisis, which started at 20:38:14 UT, had a total duration of ∼5 min. The combined use of multiparametric data collected by the permanent instrumental networks (seismic, acoustic, and thermal records) and a field survey carried out immediately after the event enabled us to constrain the eruptive dynamics and quantify physical param…
Sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy of wedge-top clastic successions: Insights and open questions from the upper Tortonian Terravecchia Formation…
2013
Abstract An up to 1250 m-thick clastic succession, the upper Tortonian Terravecchia Formation (TRV), has been analysed in detail in the middle–late Miocene Scillato wedge-top Basin grown above an already deformed tectonic stack in the northern Sicilian fold-and-thrust belt. The study involved field-based sedimentological and stratigraphic analyses aimed to determine to what extent both the depositional and sequence stratigraphic evolution of the Scillato Basin have been ruled by syn-sedimentary compressional to transpressional tectonics. Widespread intraformational angular unconformities associated with sudden change of palaeocurrents pattern and successive source area shifting suggest that…
Fault rate controls on carbonate gravity-flow deposits of the Liassic of Central High Atlas (Morocco).
2013
21 pages; International audience; The aim of this work is to describe and to explore linkages between fault activity and gravity-related sedimentary deposits during the early rifting of a carbonate depositional system. The study area, located at the southern edge of Central High Atlas (Morocco), hosts 900 m thick Liassic gravity-related sedimentary deposits, preserved at the hanging wall of one of the possibly inherited, reactivated Hercynian faults (Tizi n'Firest fault). This study documents gravity-flow deposits constrained by a highresolution biostratigraphic framework (ca. 100 ka). These gravity-flow deposits evolve over time. Unstratified conglomerate beds are limited to the Sinemurian…
Tectonometamorphic evolution of high-pressure rocks from the island of Amorgos (Central Aegean, Greece)
2007
Structural and metamorphic data from the island of Amorgos (central Aegean Sea) show evidence for the existence of two distinct high-pressure units, the Metabasite Unit and the Basal Conglomerate Unit. These are exposed at the base of a thick marble sequence and overlying flysch deposits. The Metabasite Unit is characterized by a mineral assemblage of blue amphibole, garnet and clinopyroxene, indicating P – T conditions of 500–600 °C and >13 kbar. It is juxtaposed below carpholite-bearing metaconglomerates and quartz-rich micaschists of the Basal Conglomerate Unit, for which metamorphic conditions of 300–450 °C and 10–14 kbar are estimated. The contact between the two units is interpreted a…
Volatile dilution during magma injections and implications for volcano explosivity
2016
Magma reservoirs underneath volcanoes grow through episodic emplacement of magma batches. These pulsed magma injections can substantially alter the physical state of the resident magma by changing its temperature, pressure, composition, and volatile content. Here we examine plagioclase phenocrysts in pumice from the 2014 Plinian eruption of Kelud (Indonesia) that record the progressive capture of small melt inclusions within concentric growth zones during crystallization inside a magma reservoir. High-spatial-resolution Raman spectroscopic measurements reveal the concentration of dissolved H2O within the melt inclusions, and provide insights into melt-volatile behavior at the single crystal…
