An Active X-Ray Spectrometer for the SELENE-2 Rover

The Active X-ray Spectrometer (AXS) for the Japanese SELENE-2 rover has been proposed for elemental analysis on the lunar surface to measure the major elements: Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, and Fe; the minor elements, Na, K, P, S, Cl, Cr, and Mn and the trace element Ni, all depending on their concentrations at a landing site. The elemental data of the AXS allow us to not only classification but also quantification of surface rocks on the Moon. The effect of the slope of irregularly distributed roughness elements on turbulent wall-bounded flows

Wall roughness produces a downward shift of the mean streamwise velocity profile in the log region, known as the roughness function. The dependence of the roughness function on the height and arrangement of roughness elements has been confirmed in several studies where regular rough walls were analysed; less attention has been paid to non-regular rough walls. A simple equation for determining sea surface emissivity in the 3–15 µm region

The high level of accuracy demanded for the sea surface temperature retrieval from infrared data requires an accurate determination of directional sea surface emissivity (SSE). Previous models have permitted calculating SSEs using a physical characterization of sea surface roughness and emission. However, these result in complex equations, and make an operational application difficult. Estimation of the Roughness Function in Turbulent Flows Using the Slope of the Roughness

In the last decades, important efforts have been made to better understand the effects of surface roughness on the mean flow. These studies have been performed investigating turbulent channel flows, turbulent boundary layers or pipe flows. The most evident effect of the roughness is the increase of the overall resistance, corresponding to a decrease of the mean streamwise velocity profile in the logarithmic region. This reduction is known as roughness function \(\varDelta U^+\) (the symbol \(^+\) represents quantities made non dimensional using the friction velocity \(u_{\tau }\), or the viscous length scale \(\nu /u_{\tau }\)).

Measuring intrinsic thickness of rough membranes: application to nanofibrillated cellulose films

Adequate measurement of thickness of sheet-like materials or membranes is most important for quantifying their properties such as density, barrier properties and mechanical strength. Depending on the surface roughness of the membrane, the thickness measured by standard micrometre devices (apparent thickness) may considerably overestimate the actual geometrical mean thickness (intrinsic thickness) required for such purposes. Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the quality of keratectomy specimens created with the Amadeus® microkeratome (AMO) using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Setting: Johannes Gutenberg-University Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology, Mainz, and the Department of Anatomy, Justus Liebig-University, Giessen, Germany. Methods: Corneal cuts were performed in freshly enucleated pig eyes using the Amadeus microkeratome with 9 combinations of oscillation rate and head-advance speed. Abstract The radiative transfer scheme implemented for the retrieval of soil moisture from passive microwaves is a function of scattering, polarization mixing and attenuation effects of soil and vegetation. Theses factors are usually represented by Vegetation Optical Depth (VOD), vegetation scattering albedo, and surface roughness parameter, along with soil moisture.
