Effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on foot surgeries.
2021
Background Musculoskeletal dysfunction due to deformities and injuries of the foot is a common orthopedic problem. Objectives To analyze the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on both elective and emergency foot surgeries. Material and methods This study analyzed the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on elective and emergency foot surgeries. The comparison included data collected in 2019 (March 15-October 15, when the epidemic did not influence the Polish healthcare system or patient demographics) and in a corresponding period in 2020. This study was conducted in the trauma and orthopedic surgery wards and the emergency departments of 2 regional Polish hospitals. Results The analysis of the data…
Secondary Circulation of Tropical Cyclones in Vertical Wind Shear: Lagrangian Diagnostic and Pathways of Environmental Interaction
2015
Abstract This study introduces a Lagrangian diagnostic of the secondary circulation of tropical cyclones (TCs), here defined by those trajectories that contribute to latent heat release in the region of high inertial stability of the TC core. This definition accounts for prominent asymmetries and transient flow features. Trajectories are mapped from the three-dimensional physical space to the (two dimensional) entropy–temperature space. The mass flux vector in this space subsumes the thermodynamic characteristics of the secondary circulation. The Lagrangian diagnostic is then employed to further analyze the impact of vertical wind shear on TCs in previously published idealized numerical exp…
Electrophysiological Correlates of Change Detection during Delayed Matching Task: A Comparison of Different References
2017
Detecting the changed information between memory representation and incoming sensory inputs is a fundamental cognitive ability. By offering the promise of excellent temporal resolution, event-related potential (ERP) technique has served as a primary tool for studying this process with reference of the linked mastoid (LM). However, given that LM may distort the ERP signals, it is still undetermined whether LM is the best reference choice. The goal of the current study was to systematically compare LM, reference electrode standardization technique (REST) and average reference (AR) for assessing the ERP correlates of change detection during a delayed matching task. Colored shapes were adopted …
Aluminium distribution in an Earth's non–primitive lower mantle
2020
The aluminium incorporation mechanism of perovskite was explored by means of quantum mechanics in combination with equilibrium/off-equilibrium thermodynamics under the pressure-temperature conditions of the Earth's lower mantle (from 24 to 80 GPa). Earth's lower mantle was modelled as a geochemically non-primitive object because of an enrichment by 3 wt% of recycled crustal material (MORB component). The compositional modelling takes into account both chondrite and pyrolite reference models. The capacity of perovskite to host Al was modelled through an Al2O3 exchange process in an unconstrained Mg-perovskite + Mg-Al-perovskite + free-Al2O3(corundum) system. Aluminium is globally incorporate…
Application of the slurry technique to biological materials: a survey of literature
1991
The literature on the application of the slurry technique to biological materials is reviewed. It is obvious from the various applications that the most frequently employed atomization method for slurry analysis in biological materials is electrothermal atomization using either graphite tube or platform atomizers. The slurry technique is particularly useful when certified reference materials are not available and when the standard addition method is to be avoided. The literature survey revealed that this technique compares favourably with other methods for the determination of trace metals in biological materials.
Energy-Saving Mechatronic System for Fatigue Tests of Materials under Variable-Amplitude Proportional Bending and Torsion
2010
The paper presents structure and principles of operation of the fatigue test stand for specimens subjected to polyharmonic proportional bending and torsion. The stand is equipped with a digital control system based on data acquisition board Daqboard/2000 and LabVIEW environment. The history of polyharmonic loading is a sum of four harmonic components of various amplitudes, frequencies and phases adjusted by means of four rotating disks with unbalanced masses of the inertial vibrator. Application of a computer with the software elaborated by the authors and the control system enables determination of fatigue characteristics of the material under constant or variable amplitude bending, torsio…
Remote voltage synchronization for wireless Partial Discharge diagnostics
2016
The main objective of this paper is the assessment of the exact phase angle displacement of each Partial Discharge, PD, pulse with respect to the voltage reference waveform. Such problem also referred to as ‘synchronization’ is relevant when the cable is not accessible and the PD measure is carried out in wireless mode. It is well known, that the angle phase shift, due to the propagation phenomenon on the transmission line, can be calculated knowing the line type and length and typical operating conditions of the transmission line. The setup comprises a customized electronic device, the “Phase check”, a server to collect remote measurements and a Look up table to provide corrections to the …
A subthreshold, low-power, RHBD reference circuit, for earth observation and communication satellites
2015
A low-power, wide temperature range, radiation tolerant CMOS voltage reference is presented. The proposed reference circuit exhibits a voltage deviation of 0.8mV for 3-MeV protons total ionization dose of 2Mrad and a voltage deviation of 3.8mV for 10-keV X-rays total ionization dose of 4Mrad while being biased at the nominal supply voltage of 0.75V during X-ray irradiation. In addition, the circuit consumes only 4μW and exhibits a measured Temperature Drift of 15ppm/°C for a temperature range of 190°C (−60°C to 130°C) at the supply voltage of 0.75V. It utilizes only CMOS transistors, operating in the subthreshold regime, and poly-silicon resistors without using any diodes or external compon…
Systematic procedure for the preparation of sets of calibration standards for x-ray fluorescence analysis of ceramic materials
1998
A systematic procedure for the preparation of optimized sets of calibration solid standards for the x-ray fluorescence analysis of ceramic materials is described. The matrix of the contents of the N analytes in the n standards (n ≥ N) is calculated from an n x N experimental design matrix, and from the upper and lower limits of the calibration range for each of the N analytes. Two procedures, which are useful for taking into account analyte interactions, are proposed for constructing the experimental design matrix, i.e. the scroll procedure and the procedure of the centers. A program developed to help the analyst in designing and preparing the set of standards following the proposed procedu…
Fast determination of fish mineral profile. Application to Vietnamese panga fish
2013
A methodology, based on inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry after microwave-assisted digestion with HNO3/H2O2, was developed to determine the mineral profile of panga fish samples imported from Vietnam. A total of 42 essential and toxic elements were studied in seven samples taken from the local market. Preliminary studies were focused on selecting the best wavelength and the required dilution of samples in order to provide the highest sensitivity to maximize the number of analytes to be determined without spectral or matrix interferences. Adequate accuracy was assured by the analysis of certified reference material TORT-2. Mercury was also determined by a direct method…
