An ABM to support collective reflection on the evolution of mobility

2021

International audience; Transport infrastructures play a large part in defining a smart, sustainable and resilient city. Planning transportation systems traditionally rely on well-known evolutions of roads or public transportation (roundabouts for security, etc.). Yet, infrastructures might also benefit from, or may have to adapt to, recent disruptive innovations concerning modalities, technologies and societal organization (autonomous cars, smart infrastructure, homeworking, etc.). However, innovative urban policies might either facilitate mobility and increase citizen well-being, or create negative side effects. Urban planning therefore requires the city to assess the impact of these disr…

Combined multi-wavelength laser speckle contrast imaging and diffuse reflectance imaging for skin perfusion assessment

2019

Abstract Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI) is a powerful low-cost method for visualization of flow, microcirculation and blood perfusion. Due to the fact that diseased and healthy tissues has different blood perfusion, LSCI can be a perspective tool for cancer diagnostics and discrimination between different types of tissues. Previously, multispectral diffuse reflectance imaging method for melanoma diagnostics has been introduced. In this work, multi-wavelength (532-, 655- and 850- nm) LSCI technique combined with hyperspectral camera and diffuse reflectance imaging method will be used for assessment of tissues with different skin perfusion properties. An in vivo experiment with occlusi…

Achromatic linear retarder with tunable retardance

2018

We present a universal design and proof-of-concept of a tunable linear retarder of uniform wavelength response in a broad spectral range. It consists of two half-wave retarders (HWR) between two quarter-wave retarders (QWRs), where the uniform retardance can be tuned continuously by simply rotating one of the HWRs. A proof-of-concept of this design is built by using commercially available Fresnel rhomb retarders that provide retardation with almost wavelength uniformity in the visible and near infrared from 450 to 1550 nm. The design is universal, since other achromatic QWRs and HWRs could also be employed. The system is experimentally demonstrated to control the state of polarization of a …

Quantification of phenolic acids by partial least squares Fourier-transform infrared (PLS-FTIR) in extracts of medicinal plants.

2020

Introduction Phenolic compounds are ubiquitous compounds found in all plants as their secondary metabolites. Phenols are becoming increasingly important particularly because of their beneficial effects on health. Objective To provide a faithful calibration model for the simultaneous determination and quantification of phenolic acids, as salicylic, vanillic, p-hydroxybenzoic acids, eugenol and thymol in different extracts of medicinal plants, a comparative study was made between two methods of infrared measurements based on attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and transmission. Methods Characteristic absorbance peak heights of mid-infrared spectra of individual phenolic acids were measured for…

Unrestricted Shapes of Jellium Clusters

1995

A jellium model with a completely relaxable background charge density is used to study metal clusters containing 2 to 22 electrons. The resulting shapes of the clusters exhibit breaking of axial and inversion symmetries, as well as molecular formation. The clusters without inversion symmetry are soft against deformation. The strongly deformed 14-electron cluster is found to be semi-magic. Stable-shape isomers are predicted.

Autobiographical texts written by learners of Catalan as an Additional Language: From formative needs to reflection in the teaching of narrative genr…

2022

In this article we analyse autobiographical narrative texts written by university students studying Catalan as an Additional Language at a CEFR (2020) B1 level. The goal is to analyse the formative needs related to the writing of this genre in order to foster metadiscursive reflection in the classroom that will allow students to improve their written output. To this end, we analyzed a corpus of 39 autobiographies at both the macrotextual level (i.e., rhetorical moves) and the microtextual level (i.e., deictic elements which channel the narrative’s organization). Our results show that the problems that these texts present for students are related to awareness of the elements that define the …

A Critical Reflection on Relationship between ICT and Change Management in Enhancing Teaching and Learning Performances

2019

Abstract Numerous studies have pointed out direct positive impacts of Information Communication Technology (ICT) on education quality. From just tool, ICT is being viewed in itself as quality or as catalyst for quality improvement. These findings have led universities worldwide to adopt ICT regardless of uncertainties. Consequently, not all of them succeeded. Proofs from cases around the world show that ICT produces positive impact only in the environment that fits. Such environment is fostered by an effective change management approach. The main aim of this paper is therefore to present the symbiotic relationship between ICT and change management, zeroing on how changes are managed to atta…

Riflessione critica nella pratica del Service-Learning: generare consapevolezza per la cura di sé

2023

The present contribution aims to analyse the experience of 150 students enrolled in the first year of the Degree Course in Primary Education Sciences (a.y. 2022-23), at the University of Palermo. The students who partecipated in the Service-Learning Project PR[A.S.S.I.] "Apprendere Serve, Servire Insegna", valorised the monitoring tool of narrative training: the logbook. The research focuses specifically on this form of experiential learning based on self-recognition, care, and the valorisation of experience as the ordering criterion of personal flourishing. It aims to identify good practices in front of social engagement, to analyse the development of experiences and to promote a self-care…
