Value added taxes on electronic commerce: Obstacles to the EU Commission’s approach

While e-commerce is developing tremendously fast, domestic politics and legislation labour to keep up with the dynamics of the new technology. Among other things, fiscal law is a particularly explosive area. Here, the current proposal of the EU Commission is to apply the already existing value added tax to e-commerce. By doing so, the Commission hopes to prevent the massive threatened shortfall in tax revenue. How is this approach of the Commission to be judged? Are there any alternatives?

A product space reformulation with reduced dimension for splitting algorithms

AbstractIn this paper we propose a product space reformulation to transform monotone inclusions described by finitely many operators on a Hilbert space into equivalent two-operator problems. Our approach relies on Pierra’s classical reformulation with a different decomposition, which results in a reduction of the dimension of the outcoming product Hilbert space. We discuss the case of not necessarily convex feasibility and best approximation problems. By applying existing splitting methods to the proposed reformulation we obtain new parallel variants of them with a reduction in the number of variables. AbstractThis paper highlights some peculiar characteristics of the economic crisis induced by the spread of COVID-19. It suggests two intertwined policy measures in order to tackle the emergency phase of the crisis and to support the economy in the subsequent recovery phase. The proposed short-term policy measures offer policy responses in the event of a second wave of coronavirus infections in the coming months. The Tridentine reforms met a real obstacle in the kingdom of Sicily, linked to the very particular religious-institutional system of the island, unique in the catholic European context. In Sicily, indeed, through a court called Regia Monarchia, re-organized by Philip II in 1579, the king exercised very wide ecclesiastical prerogatives, which went far beyond the simple right of royal patronage and greatly limited the power of Sicilian bishops.
