The Perception and Attitudes Towards City Garbage Management: A First Analysis

2017

The main aim of this paper is to to explore the perception and attitude of people toward an important issue like the City Garbage Management. A new Survey Questionnaire to measure the perception and attitudes towards city garbage management has been developed by the Authors, in order to realize a very first analysis of compatibility of the Comprehensive Action Determination Model - CADM (Klöckner, 2013) with City Garbage Management issues. To test the application of the CADM model to City Garbage Management, a simple linear regression was calculated to predict the dependent variables based on predictor variables according the CADM model. The linear regression analysis shows a first confirma…

Quantifying Fundamental Vegetation Traits over Europe Using the Sentinel-3 OLCI Catalogue in Google Earth Engine

2022

Thanks to the emergence of cloud-computing platforms and the ability of machine learning methods to solve prediction problems efficiently, this work presents a workflow to automate spatiotemporal mapping of essential vegetation traits from Sentinel-3 (S3) imagery. The traits included leaf chlorophyll content (LCC), leaf area index (LAI), fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), and fractional vegetation cover (FVC), being fundamental for assessing photosynthetic activity on Earth. The workflow involved Gaussian process regression (GPR) algorithms trained on top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance simulations generated by the coupled canopy radiative transfer model (RTM) SC…

An approach to identify new antihypertensive agents using Thermolysin as model: In silico study based on QSARINS and docking

2019

Thermolysin is a bacterial proteolytic enzyme, considered by many authors as a pharmacological and biological model of other mammalian enzymes, with similar structural characteristics, such as angiotensin converting enzyme and neutral endopeptidase. Inhibitors of these enzymes are considered therapeutic targets for common diseases, such as hypertension and heart failure. In this report, a mathematical model of Multiple Linear Regression, for ordinary least squares, and genetic algorithm, for selection of variables, are developed and implemented in QSARINS software, with appropriate parameters for its fitting. The model is extensively validated according to OECD standards, so that its robust…

Reply to "The association of red blood cell distribution width and morbid obesity" by Aydin et al.

2014

We thank Aydin & cols. for their comments about our recently published paper “Red blood cell distribution width is not related with inflammatory parameters in morbidly obese patients” in Clinical Biochemistry Journal [1]. The authors show their concern about the clinical interpretation of our findings since we did not report folate and B12 vitamin levels. Moreover, they state that we should demonstrate the elimination of thrombocytopenic diseases by showing platelet count data. Aswe state in the paper, exclusion criteria for obese patients included “organic, malignant, hematological, infectious or inflammatory disease”. Therefore, any case of thrombocytopenic disease was not included. Moreo…

Use of dietary supplements and anabolic-androgenic steroids among Finnish adolescents in 1991-2005.

2009

Background : The aim of the study was to describe the prevalence, trends and associated factors of dietary supplements (DS) and anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) use among Finnish adolescents. Methods: The sample comprised 30 511 adolescents aged 12–18 years, of which 22 519 (74%) answered a questionnaire. We also studied associations between 14 socioeconomic, health and health behavioural variables and DS and AAS use by logistic regression. Results: The proportion of respondents using DS was 45% during the past year and it increased linearly by age. Vitamins (37%) and herbal products (13%) were the most common DSs. In 1991, 9% of the boys aged 16–18 years reported protein use, while the f…

Partial least squares-near infrared determination of pesticides in commercial formulations

2007

Abstract A solvent free, fast and environmentally friendly near infrared-based methodology (NIR) was developed for pesticide determination in commercially available formulations. This methodology was based on the direct measurement of the diffuse reflectance spectra of solid samples and a multivariate calibration model (partial least squares, PLS) to determine the active principle concentration in commercial formulations. The PLS calibration set was built on using the spiked samples by mixing different amounts of pesticide standards and powdered samples. Buprofezin, Diuron and Daminozide were used as test analytes. Concentration of Buprofezin in the samples was calculated employing a 4-fact…

Quantitative Transfer Function Approaches in Palaeoclimatic Reconstruction Using Quaternary Ostracods

2012

Abstract Quantifying (palaeo-)environmental changes is a key challenge for aquatic biological proxies, but the number of published transfer functions is increasing rapidly for the main palaeoecologically relevant groups such as diatoms and chironomids, and several transfer functions have also been developed during the past decades based on ostracod findings. The main environmental variables influencing the species assemblage composition in ostracod training sets are specific ion concentrations or ratios, salinity, water temperature and/or water depth. The available transfer functions and training sets are globally scattered, but often regionally restricted in their application. The most com…

Gully Erosion Susceptibility Mapping Using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines—Replications and Sample Size Scenarios

2019

Soil erosion is a serious problem affecting numerous countries, especially, gully erosion. In the current research, GIS techniques and MARS (Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines) algorithm were considered to evaluate gully erosion susceptibility mapping among others. The study was conducted in a specific section of the Gorganroud Watershed in Golestan Province (Northern Iran), covering 2142.64 km2 which is intensely influenced by gully erosion. First, Google Earth images, field surveys, and national reports were used to provide a gully-hedcut evaluation map consisting of 307 gully-hedcut points. Eighteen gully erosion conditioning factors including significant geoenvironmental and morph…

A pilot study on the differences in wavefront aberrations between two ethnic groups of young generally myopic subjects

2008

A comparative population-based cross-sectional study design was used to examine the prevalence of wavefront patterns in two different ethnic groups, and the relationship of these patterns with ocular biometrics and gender. The Shin–Nippon SRW5000 open field autorefractor, the Wavefront Analysis Supported Customized Ablation (WASCA) wavefront analyser and the IOLMaster were used to determine wavefront aberrations, mean spherical equivalent (SE) refractive error and axial length (AL). Seventy-four eyes from 74 young healthy subjects (44 British Asians, 30 Caucasians; 36 men, 38 women; mean age 22.51 ± 3.89 years) with mean SE averaging )1.90 ± 2.76 D (range )10.88 to +2.19 D) were examined. R…

Multivariate Methods Based Soft Measurement for Wine Quality Evaluation

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/740754 Open Access Soft measurement is a new, developing, and promising industry technology and has been widely used in the industry nowadays. This technology plays a significant role especially in the case where some key variables are difficult to be measured by traditional measurement methods. In this paper, the quality of the wine is evaluated given the wine physicochemical indexes according to multivariate methods based soft measurement. The multivariate methods used in this paper include ordinary least squares regression (OLSR), principal c…
