Proteomic analysis of the pinworm Syphacia muris (Nematoda: Oxyuridae), a parasite of laboratory rats

Syphacia muris (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) is a ubiquitous nematode that commonly infects rats in the laboratory which can interfere in the development of biological assays. The somatic extract of S. muris adults collected from infected rats was investigated using a proteomic approach. A shot-gun liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry procedure was used. We used the MASCOT search engine (Matrix-Science) and ProteinPilot software v2.0 (Applied Biosystems) for the database search. A total of 359 proteins were accurately identified from the worms. Expanding the protein catalogue in the proteome reference map of human breast cancer cells

In this report we present a catalogue of 162 proteins (including isoforms and variants) identified in a prototype of proteomic map of breast cancer cells. This work represents the prosecution of previous studies describing the protein complement of breast cancer cells of the line 8701-BC, which has been well characterized for several parameters, providing to be a useful model for the study of breast cancer-associated candidate biomarkers. Response of rainbow trout transcriptome to model chemical contaminants.

We used high-density cDNA microarray in studies of responses of rainbow trout fry at sublethal ranges of beta-naphthoflavone, cadmium, carbon tetrachloride, and pyrene. The differentially expressed genes were grouped by the functional categories of Gene Ontology. Significantly different response to the studied compounds was shown by a number of classes, such as cell cycle, apoptosis, signal transduction, oxidative stress, subcellular and extracellular structures, protein biosynthesis, and modification. Phosphorylation of Elp1 by Hrr25 is required for elongator-dependent tRNA modification in yeast.

Elongator is a conserved protein complex comprising six different polypeptides that has been ascribed a wide range of functions, but which is now known to be required for modification of uridine residues in the wobble position of a subset of tRNAs in yeast, plants, worms and mammals. In previous work, we showed that Elongator's largest subunit (Elp1; also known as Iki3) was phosphorylated and implicated the yeast casein kinase I Hrr25 in Elongator function. It is now widely recognised that the cross-talk between cancer and stromal cells may play a crucial role in cancer progression. However little is known about the complex underlying molecular mechanisms that occur within the tumor microenvironment. Fibroblasts are the major stromal cells with multiple roles, especially towards both the extracellular matrix and the neighbouring cell population, including neoplastic cells. Comparative Proteome Profiling and Functional Analysis of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia Cell Lines

The aim of the present study was the molecular profiling of different Ph+ chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) cell lines (LAMA84, K562, and KCL22) by a proteomic approach. By employing two-dimensional gel electrophoresis combined with mass spectrometry analysis, we have identified 191 protein spots corresponding to 142 different proteins. Among these, 63% were cancer-related proteins and 74% were described for the first time in leukemia cells. Multivariate analysis highlighted significant differences in the global proteomic profile of the three CML cell lines. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in the pathogenesis of many inflammatory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). They can alter the expression of genes involved in cellular damage by activating transcription factors, including the NF-κB and the activator protein 1 (AP-1). Morphological, biochemical, and molecular biological characterization of a rat rhabdomyosarcoma cell line during differentiation induction in vitro.

BA-HAN-1C is a clonal rat rhabdomyosarcoma cell line consisting of proliferating mononuclear tumor cells, some of which spontaneously fuse to form terminally differentiated postmitotic myotubelike giant cells. Exposure to retinoic acid resulted in an inhibition of proliferation and a marked increase in cellular differentiation. The number of myotubelike giant cells significantly increased, and about 30% of the mononuclear tumor cells exhibited morphological features of rhabdomyogenic differentiation which were not observed in the mononuclear cells of untreated cultures. Bohr-effect and buffering capacity of hemocyanin from the tarantula E. californicum.

A previous report showed that binding of oxygen to the 24-meric hemocyanin from E. californicum does not correlate linearly with the release of protons as known from hemoglobin. However, this unusual complex phenomenological observation could not be explained at that time. Here, I present a full analysis of the thermodynamic coupling between protons and oxygen for the 24-meric tarantula hemocyanin in Ringer-solution based on the Nested-MWC-model. Long intergenic non-coding RNAs (LincRNAs) are long RNAs that do not encode proteins. Functional evidence is lacking for most of them. Their biogenesis is not well-known, but it is thought that many lincRNAs originate from genomic duplication of coding material, resulting in pseudogenes, gene copies that lose their original function and can accumulate mutations. While most pseudogenes eventually stop producing a transcript and become erased by mutations, many of these pseudogene-based lincRNAs keep similarity to the parental gene from which they originated, possibly for functional reasons.
