Unscrambling the Average User of Habbo Hotel

2007

The “user” is an ambiguous concept in human-computer interaction and information systems. Analyses of users as social actors, participants, or configured users delineate approaches to studying design-use relationships. Here, a developer’s reference to a figure of speech, termed the “average user,” is contrasted with design guidelines. The aim is to create an understanding about categorization practices in design through a case study about the virtual community, Habbo Hotel. A qualitative analysis highlighted not only the meaning of the “average user,” but also the work that both the developer and the category contribute to this meaning. The average user a) represents the unknown, b) influen…

Mobile financial services : Introduction, definition, and conceptualization

2019

Incumbent business models in banking and payment are continuously challenged by new competition and evolving consumer expectations as banking and payment landscape have increasingly moved digital and mobile. Mobile financial services (MFS) and related technologies encompass a broad range of digital (including mobile) devices, channels, and financial transactions that consumers execute on their mobile phones or tablets. This chapter conceptualizes the term ‘MFS’ and investigates what constitutes the field of MFS. The chapter seeks to answer the following research questions: What is the mobile financial services landscape? What are MFS and how they have been conceptualized in the marketing an…

Anagraphical relationships and crime specialization within Cosa Nostra

2021

Abstract The aim of the present work is to investigate the relationships established within Cosa Nostra, by making use of networks and complex-systems methods. The analysis is performed at three different levels, that is, individuals, groups within mafia syndicates, and relationships amongst mafia syndicates. The reported empirical analysis is based on the criminal records of 632 affiliates to Cosa Nostra selected from a set of 125 judgements emitted by the Palermo courts from 2000 to 2014. According to the criminal records of the Palermo Prosecutor Office, such a dataset includes approximately 10% of the whole population of Cosa Nostra affiliates in western Sicily. Furthermore, the vital s…

Enhancement of Hydrolysis through the Formation of Mixed Heterometal Species: Al3+/CH3Sn3+ Mixtures

2013

ABSTRACT: The hydrolysis of mixed-metal cations (Al3+/CH3Sn3+) was studied in aqueous solutions of NaNO3, at I = 1.00 ± 0.05 mol·dm−3 and T = 298.15 K, by potentiometric technique. Several hydrolytic mixed species are formed in this mixed system, namely, Alp(CH3Sn)q(OH)r with (p, q, r) = (1, 1, 4), (1, 1, 5), (1, 1, 6), (2, 1, 4), (1, 2, 5), (1, 4, 11), (1, 3, 8), and (7, 6, 32). The stability of these species, expressed by the equilibrium: pAl3+ + qCH3Sn3+ + rOH− = Alp(CH3Sn)q(OH)r 3(p+q)−r, βpqr OH, can be modeled by the empirical relationship: log βpqr OH = −3.34 + 2.67p + 9.23(q + r). By using the equilibrium constant Xpqr relative to the formation reaction: pAl(p+q)(OH)r + q(CH3Sn)(p+q…

Interrelation between close teacher-student relationships and engagement : the case of Finnish preschools

2016

The study examined the interrelation between positive teacher-student relationships and teacher-reported level of engagement in Finnish preschool settings. Fifty preschool teachers working in Jyväskylä city area answered questionnaires in which they de-scribed 50 randomly selected students from their class (28 girls and 22 boys), one stu-dent for each teacher. Questionnaires consisted of two parts and measured the quality of teacher-child relationships and the level of children’s emotional and behavioural en-gagement. The results showed that quality of teacher-child relationships in the context of Finnish preschools is closely interrelated with the level of children’s engagement into the le…

Towards Ethical Guidelines of Using Telepresence Robots in Residential Care

2021

AbstractRobotic telepresence is a potential technology to help alleviating the loneliness of elderly people. The impacts of long-term use of telepresence robots in residential care are not well known. We were interested in how using a telepresence robot influences the resident, family members and care workers at a facility, and what challenges and solutions there are for wider adoption of such robots in residential care. With a telepresence robot Double, we arranged a series of three trials in two separate residential care facilities: one 12-week trial in a private facility and two successive 6-week trials in a public facility. In each trial, we installed the telepresence robot in a room of…

Fictosexuality, Fictoromance, and Fictophilia: A Qualitative Study of Love and Desire for Fictional Characters

2021

Fictosexuality, fictoromance, and fictophilia are terms that have recently become popular in online environments as indicators of strong and lasting feelings of love, infatuation, or desire for one or more fictional characters. This article explores the phenomenon by qualitative thematic analysis of 71 relevant online discussions. Five central themes emerge from the data: (1) fictophilic paradox, (2) fictophilic stigma, (3) fictophilic behaviors, (4) fictophilic asexuality, and (5) fictophilic supernormal stimuli. The findings are further discussed and ultimately compared to the long-term debates on human sexuality in relation to fictional characters in Japanese media psychology. Contexts f…

Vanhempien ja kavereiden tuen yhteys nuoruusiän fyysiseen aktiivisuuteen

2017

Tutkimus perustuu kyse…

Habitat type and island identity as drivers of community assembly in an archipelago

2020

Aim: Ecoinformatics offer new opportunity to test islands as biogeographic and eco- logical models. In this paper we predicted three hypotheses: (1) plot-based data issu- ing from vegetation surveys can be used to predict Island Species-Area Relationships (ISARs) or island similarity; (2) the habitat area is an independent predictor of species richness patterns within island; (3) species richness and composition are more de- pendent on habitat type than island identity in land-bridge islands. Area: Tuscan Archipelago, Italy. Methods: We assembled a database of all the vegetation plots available for the archi- pelago. For the first hypothesis we calculated ISARs, using Arrhenius model, and B…
